    Description: A single recessive gene, lpr, induces an autoimmune-lymphoproliferative syndrome in several strains of mice. The lymphoid organs of lpr/lpr mice contained cells with increased amounts of myb RNA, which codes for a protein found in the nucleus. A similar human lymphoproliferative disorder also had an increase in c-myb expression.     Description: Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is a potent mitogen with hormonal activity in the gastrointestinal tract. Material cross-reacting with EGF was detected in the central nervous system of the developing and adult albino rat by the indirect immunofluorescence technique. High concentrations of EGF-cross-reacting material were identified in forebrain and midbrain structures of pallidal areas of the brain. These include the globus pallidus, ventral pallidum, entopeduncular nucleus, substantia nigra pars reticulata, and the islands of Calleja .     Description: The effect of hypoxic exposure on various mitochondrial enzymes and on cell mitochondrial genomic content was studied in two types of mammalian cells. Hypoxia depressed the activity of six enzymes to the same degree. The kinetics of depression and of recovery during reexposure to normoxia were statistically similar for three marker enzymes. Despite the global and symmetrical decrease in enzyme activities, mitochondrial DNA remained constant.     Description: The release of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) from tissue from the mediobasal hypothalamic-anterior hypothalamic-preoptic area of prepuberal female rats was measured in a perfusion system. Measurements were also made of the concentrations of LHRH in these tissue fragments and of luteinizing hormone in serum obtained when the rats were killed. Four groups of immature rats were studied: intact, ovariectomized, ovariectomized and implanted with estradiol-containing capsules, and ovariectomized rats primed with estradiol and injected with progesterone. The release of LHRH from the tissue of ovariectomized animals was significantly less than that of intact females and was not modified when the ovariectomized rats received estradiol. However, there was a four- to fivefold increase in LHRH release from tissue of ovariectomized rats primed with estradiol when they were killed 6 hours after they received an injection of progesterone. The concentrations of LHRH in tissue and of luteinizing hormone in serum varied among groups and with the time of day that the animals were killed.     Notes: A model is derived for solids mixing and material transport in a continucus flow rotary dryer or reactor. Detailed analysis of the particle motions in the turnover process provides an opportunity to apply well-known reactor models to several subregions and to relate the overall results to different design geometries and operating conditions. The essential parameters of the model are the number of stages, the volume fractions of mixed flow and plug flow in each stage, the recycle ratio and the bypass ratio.

    Notes: A general equation is derived that predicts the evolution of pore volume distribution during isothermal gasification in the regime of kinetic control, starting from a given initial condition. The development takes into account pore enlargement as well as pore intersections. Equations are also derived for the special cases of (1) uniform pore size and (2) bimodal distribution. The results are used to interpret the experimental data of Tomkow et al. (1977) and Kawahata and Walker (1962).

    Notes: Rate studies are reported of the effect of rehydration-dehydration cycling on the vapor hydration behavior of solid K2CO3. Isothermal rate data were obtained at different temperatures and water vapor pressures for the reaction of narrowlysized anhydrous particles. Effects of different particle preparation histories on the rehydration rate were investigated and correlations of rate with particle pore structure explored. Rehydration rates of dehydrated K2CO3·3/2H2O were found to depend on the conditions of the prior dehydration. Rehydration is comparatively very slow at relative pressures below P/Peq ≃ 1.5; rates increase linearly with pressure above P/Peq ≃ 3. Hydration rates of K2CO3 particles obtained as anhydrous are substantially slower than those of identically-sized crystals produced by prior dehydration of K2CO3·3/2H2O; after one rehydration-dehydration cycle, rehydration rates are increased by as much as two orders of magnitude and this distinction between sources virtually disappears. Diffusional resistances based on calculated water vapor diffusivities are qualitatively consistent with the observed effects of cycling but do not by themselves account fully for the observations.
