Notes: From deuterium labelling experiments it was concluded that metastable molecular ions of ethyl methyl sulfide lose a methyl radical with the formation of both [CH3S=CH2]+ amd [CH3CH=SH]+· The fragmentation reactions of metastable ions generated with these structure are losses of C2H2, H2S and CH4. These reactoins and the preceding isomerizations have also been studied by means of deuterium labelling. From the results it is concluded that the three fragmentation reactions most probably occur from ions with a C—C—S skeleton. Appearance energy measurements for ions generated with the two structures above and all give rise to the same ΔHf value for these three isomeric forms. Ab initio molecular orbitals calculations confirm that these three ions fortuitously have very similar heats of formation. A potential energy diagram rationalizing the isomerizations and the principal fragmentation reaction is presented.

Notes: The dynamics of polymer melts is well reflected in the complex shear compliance J*(ω,T,M) measured in wide ranges of frequency and temperature and for various molecular weights. In the frame of the meander model all typical features of J*(ω,T,M) are quantitatively described: (1) JeNo is due to intra-meander shear, and decreases by incorporating pairs of chain ends within the superstructure folds, i.e. with decreasing M. (2) This shear motion is guaranteed by a certain amount of edge-dislocations (with Burgers vector b equal to the chain distance d- for some polymers equal to d/2). The glass relaxation and its activation diagram are understood by asking for the probability for just this amount of dislocation segments to be present. The dielectric relaxation strengths and those of the thermal properties support the chosen segment lengths. (3) The step height to the steady state compliance, Jeo - JeNo (proportional to JeNo above MC, but strongly dependent on M-distribution), is due to inter-meaner shear (formation of shear bands). (4) These bands relax by disentanglement via chain reptation across half the length of a molecule within the flow relaxation time τF. (5) The Viscosity follows from η = τF/Δeo, and is proportional to M3.3 above and M1.3 below Mc. (6) The critical molecular weight Mc is predicated by the model in fair agreement with experimental data.(7) Neglecting flow, the stress-strain curves of uncrosslinked high molecular weight polymer metals can be derived by taking into account intra-and inter-meander shear deformation.

Notes: The resistivity of insulating materials for electrostatic, ion chamber dosimeters must be very high and must remain so after exposure to ionizing radiation. Low dielectric polarization and good fabrication characteristics make hydrocarbon polymers most suitable, but both the conductivity during irradiation and its decay afterward vary greatly even for the same type of polymer, probably depending on impurities. Amorphous, styrene-based polymers and copolymers polymerized in aqueous emulsion and initiated with K2S2O8 were found to have much more rapid decay of conductivity after irradiation than pure polystyrene or other nonpolar polymers. The synthesis method incorporates sulfate groups on the polymer chain ends and leaves emulsifier residues distributed throughout the polymer as was demonstrated by various analytical procedures. To identify the trapping species a synthesis program was carried out varying selected ingredients in the polymerization recipe. It was found that the postirradiation conductivity was not dependent on the chemical nature of the emulsifier residues. On the other hand, the decay time of conductivity after irradiation did depend on the polar groups incorporated in the polymer chain. It was concluded that effective charge carrier traps were constituted of a polar second phase highly dispersed through the polymer by association with polar groups incorporated on the polymer chain.

Notes: Evidence was obtained supporting the theory that monomer droplets can become a locus of initiation and propagation in emulsion polymerization. This was done by reducing the size of the monomer droplets prior to initiation of polymerization using different preemulsification techniques for a typical latex recipe containing a common anionic surfactant. Monomer droplet size reduction caused an increase in the total surface area of the monomer droplets and thereby increased the competitiveness of these droplets for capturing active free radicals which are generated in the aqueous phase. As the total surface area of the monomer droplets was increased by preemulsification, a corresponding increase in the number of large particles formed by polymerization of these monomer droplets was experimentally measured. This work shows that monomer droplets are a locus of emulsion polymerization. However, the importance of monomer droplet polymerization is limited by their total surface area because of the competition for free radicals with other surfaces and/or particle nucleation processes. The results offer a basis for explaining why broad, and sometimes bimodal, particle size distributions are obtained in some commercial processes where the reactants are preemulsified prior to being charged into a reaction vessel.

Notes: A variety of diploid human fibroblast lines have been successfully grown to high densities (〉106 cell/ml) on recently developed microcarriers. Interferon induction using poly I·poly C and a superinduction procedure resulted in yields greater than 10,000 units/ml with one cell line. A direct comparison of microcarrier cultures to roller bottle cultures showed equivalent interferon yields on a per cell basis and some apparent differences relating to optimum inducer concentrations and kinetics of interferon accumulation.

Notes: A two-stage aerobic continuous process is suggested for the conversion of poultry waste into a single-cell protein (SCP) product. The technical feasibility of the process is examined in this paper. Using bench-scale apparatus the approximate growth kinetics have been discovered. Possible modes of product recovery have been examined. The product consists primarily of a strain of Pseudomonas fluorescens which has a lysine-rich (∼9.3%) amino acid profile that could make this product an attractive feed ingredient for poultry diets.

Notes: The effects of aging treatments on the microstructure of the Ni-base superalloys IN-738 HC and IN-738 LC were investigated. Changes in (i) size, morphology, and distribution of the γ′-phase, (ii) the amount of M23C6-carbide, and (iii) the occurrence of additional phases and phase instabilities were quantitatively determined. The results indicate the possibility to deduce an unknown thermal history from the observed microstructure.
