Notizen: Abstract Using a prokaryote (Escherichia coli) and a metazoa-resembling eukaryote (Ochromonas danica), we surveyed antioxidants which might overcome redox stress imposed by menadione sodium bisulphite (MD) and buthionine sulphoximine (BSO). BSO oxidant stress was evident only inO. danica; MD oxidant stress was evident in both organisms. Glutathione, its precursors, e.g. cysteine, homocysteine, and 2-oxo-4-thiazolidine carboxylic acid, and red blood cells, emerged as prime antioxidants for relieving BSO and MD oxidant stress. BSO and MD oxidant activity and antioxidant-annulling effect inO. danica were judged comparable to those found in animal cells whereas the resultsE. coli were not entirely equivalent. TheO. danica system emerged as a practical, rapid, and useful system for pinpointing oxidant stressors and antioxidants, and shows promise for studies with mammalian systems.

Notizen: Given a set of experimental or numerical chaotic data and a set of model differential equations with several parameters, is it possible to determine the numerical values for these parameters using a least-squares approach, and thereby to test the model against the data? We explore this question (a) with simulated data from model equations for the Rossler, Lorenz, and pendulum attractors, and (b) with experimental data produced by a physical chaotic pendulum. For the systems considered in this paper, the least-squares approach provides values of model parameters that agree well with values obtained in other ways, even in the presence of modest amounts of added noise. For experimental data, the "fitted'' and experimental attractors are found to have the same correlation dimension and the same positive Lyapunov exponent. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A newly developed 0.78 μm single-mode laser diode spectrometer tuned by scanning the laser temperature with a resolution of better than 0.005 cm−1 is used to detect weak overtone spectra of water vapor and acetylene. A total of 3.65 nm continuous tuning range can be recovered from mode hops by operating two laser diodes alternately in different temperature regions at different injection current settings. The sensitivity of this spectrometer is demonstrated by its capability of detecting a weaker water vapor spectral line with an absolute intensity of 1.45×10−25 cm2/cm per molecule at 296 K using a 2.8 m single pass absorption cell by means of frequency-modulation spectroscopy. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The interdiffusion of lateral composition modulated (GaP)2/(InP) 2 short-period superlattices (SPSs) is reported. The lateral composition modulation is achieved by the strain induced lateral layer ordering (SILO) process. A blueshift in the interband transition is observed by photoluminescence spectroscopy for capless and SiO 2 encapsulated annealed SPSs (800 °C, 5.5 h), while the intensity and wavelength of Si3N4 encapsulated annealed SPSs are only slightly perturbed. From transmission electron microscopy, capless annealed SPSs (800 °C, 5.5 h) retain their lateral composition modulation, however, the (001/2) satellite reflections disappear. For long anneal times (48 h), the interband transition corresponds to that of a In0.50Ga 0.50P alloy, suggesting the lateral composition modulation disappears. The observed lateral interdiffusion coefficient exceeds the vertical by a factor of ∼30, suggesting SPS interdiffusion is enhanced by native point defects. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Fex–Cu100−x alloys (40≤x≤90) prepared by ball milling nominally pure (99%) Fe and Cu powders and warm compacted (at ∼300 °C) were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Both fcc and bcc diffraction peaks (indicative of pure Fe and Cu) showed that the mixtures were still two phase even after milling for 400 h, and that they were comprised of 6–10 nm diameter grains. Surprisingly, however, calorimetric measurements indicate the presence of a large endothermic peak for these nanocrystalline composites on heating near 600 °C and an exothermic peak near 400 °C on cooling. Magnetic measurements show that these materials are ferromagnetic at room temperature and remain so (with decreasing saturation magnetization) up to near the Curie point of α-Fe, 770 °C. However, near 600 °C on heating (and also near 400 °C on cooling), the magnetic susceptibility indicates the existence of a magnetic phase change. High-temperature x-ray diffraction data show these effects are due to the oxidation of Fe to form magnetite which subsequently decomposes into wustite. The thermal hysteresis observed in the magnetic and thermal data is due to the sluggishness of the latter transformation. Furthermore, heating to temperatures in excess of 600 °C results in the dissolution of Cu into the iron oxides which does not reprecipitate on cooling. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: High-frequency (1 MHz–1 GHz) transmission line measurements were used to determine the composition and frequency-dependent complex permittivities and complex permeabilities of ferroelectric/ferrimagnetic (barium titanate and a magnesium-copper-zinc ferrite) composites. The effective medium rules of Maxwell–Garnett give both lower and upper bounds for the effective permittivities and permeabilities and yield accurate estimates of the bulk electric and magnetic properties at low volume fill fraction of either component provided the proper host matrix is chosen. Bruggeman theory yielded the best predictive values for the permittivity and permeability over the entire composition range. In all cases these complex quantities were shown to be constrained by Bergman–Milton bounds. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The polarization dependence of the (2+1) and (3+1) resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization of OCS have been investigated in the 70 500–74 500 cm−1 energy region. This region contains a complex system of bands arising from the excitation of the 4p Rydberg states. The symmetry of most of the observed bands have been unambiguously determined based on the intensity changes of the two and three photon resonant spectra using both linearly and circularly polarized light. These results generally confirm the assignments suggested in a previous study. New bands have also been observed and some new assignments are proposed. The vibrational frequencies ν1, ν2, and ν3 of the Rydberg states in that energy region are determined. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The Beamline 9 Wiggler was designed by Intermagnetics to produce a 16 milliradian fan of high energy x-rays into three experimental stations. The device has a 26 cm period and contains 7.5 full-strength periods. The minimum air gap is 2.1 cm. At minimum gap, a peak field of 1.9 Tesla and a half-period integrated field strength of ≥16.646 T-cm were specified by the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (SSRL). A combination of analytical, PANDIRA, and scale models were used to develop a novel "compact pole'' magnetic design. This design achieved 2.04 T peak field while maintaining a minimum of 17.816 T-cm half-period integrated field strength. Magnetic performance of the device was confirmed through the use of an Intermagnetics-designed Hall Probe scanning system as well as by long and short coil measurements. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The influence of subhydride species generated in a low-pressure Ta-based AsH3 cracker on the degree of H passivation of C acceptors in heavily doped (p≥3×1019 cm−3) In0.53Ga0.47As grown by gas source and metalorganic molecular beam epitaxy has been studied. A strong correlation has been observed between the relative abundance of AsH3, AsH, and H in quadrupole mass spectra and the degree of passivation. Enhanced effects were observed at reduced growth temperatures. Design of experiments techniques have been used to study the influence of hydride cracker temperature, substrate temperature, H2 pumping speed, group III sources, AsH3 flow rate and the second order interactions on the H passivation of C acceptors. The substrate temperature, hydride cracking temperature, and H2 pumping speed, were determined to have the dominant effects, while second order interactions were dominated by substrate temperature, H2 pumping speed, and AsH3 flow rate interactions with the hydride cracking temperature. Optimized parameters were determined that permit the growth of essentially unpassivated (≤10%) C-doped In0.53Ga0.47As with net hole concentrations as high as p=8×1019 cm−3 by both gas source and metalorganic molecular beam epitaxy techniques. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
