    Description: A brief overview is provided of the coherent Doppler lidar work at the Marshall Space Flight Center, taking into account the status and planned development of the system to be used for severe storms research. The considered system is a CW Doppler lidar operating at a wavelength of 10.6 micrometers. This lidar uses a 20 watt carbon dioxide laser. It has a range which is continuously variable from 60 m to approximately 600 m. Range variation is achieved through changing the focus of a 30 cm f/2 Cassegrainian telescope. Successful measurements with the CW lidar have included two and three dimensional wind profiles, wing tip vortex tracks and profiles, dust devil tracks and profiles, and transverse as well as line-of-sight wind velocities. The pulsed lidar in recent ground tests has succeeded in measuring clear air returns to a range of 13 km and has provided substantial information on velocities associated with the gust fronts of thunderstorms.

    Description: The Deep Space Network is in the process of fielding high-density digital instrumentation recorders for support of the Pioneer Venus 1978 entry experiment and other related tasks. It has long been obvious that these recorders would also serve well as the recording medium for very long base interferometry (VLBI) experiments with relatively weak radio sources, provided that a suitable correlation processor for these tape recordings could be established. The overall design and current status of a VLBI correlator designed to mate with these tape recorders are described.

    Description: A prototype NaI(Tl) detector (the Cluster of 54) of spherical geometry subtending a solid angle of 7.5% of 4pi at its center, has recently been assembled and tested. This detector consists of 54 close-packed but optically isolated NaI(Tl) modules and the associated electronic circuitry. The Cluster of 54 is the predecessor of an almost complete spherical detector, the Crystal Ball, which will cover 94% of 4pi. The latter detector is now under construction and is especially designed for the study of gamma-rays produced in electron-positron collisions at colliding beam facilities. This article outlines the mechanical, optical, and electronic assembly of the prototype system.

    Description: A small, helicopter-borne water-quality monitoring package is being developed by the NASA/EPA using a combination of basic in situ water quality sensors and physical sample collector technology. The package is a lightweight system which can be carried and operated by one person as a passenger in a small helicopter typically available by rental at commercial airports. Real-time measurements are made by suspending the water quality monitoring package with a cable from the hovering helicopter. Designed primarily for use in rapidly assessing hazardous material spills in inland and coastal zone water bodies, the system can survey as many as 20 data stations up to 1.5 kilometers apart in 1 hour. The system provides several channels of sensor data and allows for the addition of future sensors. The system will also collect samples from selected sites with sample collection on command. An EPA Spill Response Team member can easily transport, deploy, and operate the water quality monitoring package to determine the distribution, movement, and concentration of the spilled material in the water body.

    Description: A simple 50 x 50 sq cm MWPC plane was arranged as an RC-line and flown on a balloon flight with the MSFC-UAH Cosmic Ray experiment. Positions of primary cosmic ray tracks in the RC-line were determined by the risetime method and compared with the expected position as indicated by a best line fitted through four planes of the conventional MWPC hodoscope. Mean errors were estimated for sea-level muons, and CNO group and iron group particles. It is believed that the delta-rays accompanying the primaries degraded the position resolution. Measured standard deviations allowing for uncertainty in the true track position are of the order of 1 cm or less in the primary charge region between 7 and 26.

    Description: Measurements of mean and fluctuating axial velocity have for the first time been made in a seeded pipe flow with a semiconductor laser velocimeter. Several compact velocimeters have been constructed using laser diodes. While the intended applications have restricted the final instrument to operate in a coaxial backscatter mode, operation has been demonstrated in forward and side scattering modes. In all cases the instrument could be classed as dual beam. An instrument has been constructed to be installed in a model airfoil and will be mechanically driven to measure the flow over a 75-mm chord distance. The instrument occupies a volume measuring 100 mm x 100 mm x 40 mm. The compactness has been aided by using an avalanche photodiode instead of a photomultiplier tube.

    Description: The modulation transfer function which relates the backscattered microwave power to the long ocean wave field was measured in the North Sea during JONSWAP 75. Results from this tower experiment with an X-band scatterometer are presented and compared with the two-scale wave model (relaxation-time model).

    Description: The measurement capabilities of laser velocimetry and holographic interferometry in transonic airfoil testing were demonstrated. Presented are representative results obtained with these two nonintrusive techniques on a 15.24 cm chord airfoil section. These results include the density field about the airfoil, flow angles in the inviscid flow and viscous flow properties including the turbulent Reynolds stresses. The accuracies of the density fields obtained by interferometry were verified from comparisons with surface pressure and laser velocimeter measurements.

    Description: Two dimensional airfoil testing was conducted at the Wichita State University Beech Wind Tunnel for a number of years. The instrumentation developed and adapted during this period of testing for determination of flow fields along with traversing mechanisms for these probes are discussed. In addition, some of the techniques used to account for interference effects associated with the apparatus used for this two dimensional testing are presented. The application of a minicomputer to the data reduction and presentation is discussed.

    Description: The CZCS is used to map chlorophyll concentration, sediment distribution, gelbstroffe concentration, and temperature of coastal waters and the open ocean. The data processing techniques used to enhance contrasts over the ocean and to remove the effect of the backscattered atmosphere are presented. The multi-channel scanning radiometer of CZCS is described. The content of water is determined primarily by the CZCS measurement.
