Description: The technical properties, operation, and expected sensitivity are discussed for an experiment intended to search for narrow lines in the spectra of gamma ray bursts during the ISEE-C mission. At the heart of the experiment is a radiatively cooled germanium solid state photon detector. The instrumentation is capable of storing the entire spectrum of all but the largest bursts in the energy range 0.05-6.5 MeV. In addition, it analyzes the signals from two CsI detectors in two other experiments on the spacecraft and records event time histories from these to a few millisecond accuracy. A background mode permits spectral analysis during quiet times and will allow the determination of physically interesting upper limits for narrow lines in the diffuse gamma ray background radiation.

Description: Measurements of the gamma-ray emission in the medium-energy range between 15 and 100 MeV, obtained during two balloon flights from Brazil, are presented. The importance of this energy region in determining whether neutral-pion decay or electron bremsstrahlung is the most likely dominant source mechanism is discussed, along with the implications of such observations. Specifically, the data from this experiment suggest that emission from the galactic plane is similar to the theoretical spectrum calculated by Fichtel et al. (1976), including both source mechanisms but with the bremsstrahlung component enhanced by a factor of about 2. A spectral distribution of gamma-rays produced in the residual atmosphere above the instrument is also presented and compared with other data. A rather smooth spectral variation from high to low energies is found for the atmospheric spectrum.

Description: A balloon-borne magnetic core digitized spark chamber with two assemblies of spark-chambers above and below the scintillation counters was used to measure the medium energy gamma ray flux from the galactic center region. Gamma ray calculations are based on the multiple scattering of the pair electrons in 15 aluminum plates interleaved in the spark chamber modules. Counting rates determined during ascent and at ceiling indicate the presence of diffuse component in this energy range. Preliminary results give an integral flux between 15 and 70 MeV compared to the differential points in other results.

Notes: The method of indirectly heating the emitter wire with a laser is introduced into field desorption mass spectrometry. Use of this method results in improved sensitivity, more reliable high resolution performance, and extension of field desorption mass spectrometry to the area of high temperature chemistry.

Description / Table of Contents: Methyl and acetyl substituent effects on 13C chemical shift have been determined on (α 1→3), (α 1→4), (β 1→3) and (β 1→4) linked polysaccharides such as pseudo-nigerane, β-cyclodextrine, amylose, laminarane and cellulose. Methyl α- and β-D-glucopyranoside have been used as monomer model compounds. Shift determination of hydroxylated and substituted polysaccharides requires unambiguous assignment of their 13C spectra. Selective heteronuclear spin decoupling and the isotope effect of deuterated hydroxyl have been used as assignment techniques.

Notes: The mass spectra of bicyclic ketones bicyclo[4.2.1]nonan-9-one, bicyclo[5.2.1]decan-10-one, bicyclo[4.3.1]decan-10-one and bicyclo[5.3.1]undecan-11-one specifically deuterated in positions both adjacent and nonadjacent to the carbonyl carbon have been investigated. The fragmentation and rearrangement processes predominating appear to be dictated by the inherent strain in the molecules. An unusual tendency for fragment ions to recyclize is supported by deuterium labeling results, high resolution mass measurements, metastable studies and comparison with model compounds. The mass spectra of the bicyclic ketones under investigation are considerably more complex than those of acyclic ketones.

Notes: Mathermatical techniques (Fourier transform and iterative procedures) are described for unfolding spectrometer broadening from observed X-ray emission peaks. This enables enhanced resolution to be obtained. Broadening introduced by soller collimators and by crystal imperfections are considered in detail. Low energy peak ‘tailing’ due to beam divergence in the plane of the soller slits is also discussed.

Notes: A specific portion of our environment has been contaminated with Kepone, or chlordecone. Additionally, some specific human exposures to high concentrations of Kepone have been confirmed. Gas chromatography mass spectrometry involving chemical ionization and high resolution mass spectrometry were used to detect, identify and confirm the presence of Kepone, Kepone photoproducts and a reduction product of Kepone in environmental and human samples. Field desorption, field ionization and electron impact mass spectrometric methods, as well as infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques were used to characterize and identify Kepone hydrate and hemiketal in benzene and methanol solutions, respectively.
