    Description: Photoionization of the upper atmosphere of Titan by sunlight is expected to produce a substantial ionospheric layer. One-dimensional forms of the mass, momentum, and energy conservation equations for ions and electrons have been solved along with electron number densities of about 1000/cu cm, using various model atmospheres. The significant ions in a CH4-H2 atmosphere are H(+), H3(+), CH5(+), CH3(+), and C2H5(+). Electron temperatures may be as high as 1000 K, depending on the abundance of hydrogen in the high atmosphere. Interaction of the solar wind with the ionosphere is also discussed.

    Description: The current state of knowledge of the chemistry, dynamics and energetics of the upper atmosphere and ionosphere of Venus is reviewed together with the nature of the solar wind-Venus interaction. Because of the weak, though perhaps not negligible, intrinsic magnetic field of Venus, the mutual effects between these regions are probably strong and unique in the solar system. The ability of the Pioneer Venus Bus and Orbiter experiments to provide the required data to answer the questions outstanding is discussed in detail.

    Description: A description is presented of partial occultations of SAO 158687 by a series of rings around the planet Uranus. A 61-cm telescope at Perth Observatory in Western Australia was used in the investigations. Measurements were made using a conventional single-channel photometer equipped with an RCA C31034B photomultiplier. Uranus was centered in a 28-arc sec diameter aperture during the observations. An occultation of SAO 158687 by Uranus itself did not occur at Perth. However, five brief partial occultations of SAO 158687 were detected with the chart recorder. The midtimes, durations, and depths of these events are listed in a table.

    Description: High-quality data (uncontaminated by lander or wind noise) obtained with a three-axis short-period seismometer operating on Mars in the Utopia Planitia region are analyzed. No large events have been detected during the first five months of operation covered in the present paper. This indicates that Mars is less seismically active than the earth. Winds, and therefore a seismic background, began to intrude into the nighttime hours, starting with sol 119 (sol is a Martian day). The seismic background correlates well with wind velocity, and is proportional to the square of the wind velocity, as is appropriate for turbulent flow. A local seismic event of a magnitude of 3 and a distance of 110 km was detected on sol 80. It is interpreted as a natural seismic event.

    Description: The paper discusses imaging of Mars at 20 wavelengths in the spectral region from 0.35 to 1.10 microns performed during the 1973 opposition with a photometric imaging system that uses a silicon vidicon tube as the detector. The imaging system and data-reduction procedures are described in detail, and relative reflectance spectra for several small areas in the images are presented along with vidicon images obtained during early phases in the development of the 1973 dust storms. Several anomalous blue brightenings are examined and attributed to ground fog and H2O frost. It is suggested that anomalously large amounts of H2O were pulsed into the atmosphere from the regolith by the storm system. An apparent fading and recession of the north polar hood is noted, surface units revealed in contrast-enhanced ratio images are identified, and the need for higher-spatial-resolution orbital spectroscopy of dark areas is emphasized.

    Description: It is generally accepted that the earth-moon separation is at present increasing due to tidal dissipation. Values for the corresponding lunar deceleration and the related slowing of the earth's rotation are obtained from astronomical observations and studies of ancient eclipses. Extrapolation of these values leads to a close approach of the earth and moon 1-3 b.y. BP. Periodicities in the Precambrian stromatolites may yield the number of solar days in a lunar month prior to 500 m.y. BP. These data combined with dynamic constraints on the number of solar days in a lunar month indicate a close approach of the earth and moon at 2.85 plus or minus 0.25 b.y. BP. Mare volcanism on the moon and high-temperature Archean volcanism on the earth prior to this date may be due to tidal heating. Strong tidal heating during a close approach could have contributed to the formation of the first living organisms.

    Description: Experience gained in obtaining atmospheric parameters, oblatenesses, and diameters of Jupiter and Mars from recent stellar occultations by these planets is used to predict what can be learned from the March 1977 occultation of the star SAO158687 by Uranus. The spectra of this star and Uranus are compared to indicate the relative instrument intensities of the two objects, the four passbands where the relative intensities are most nearly equal are listed, and expected photon fluxes from the star are computed on the assumption that it has UBVRI colors appropriate for a K5 main-sequence object. It is shown that low photon noise errors can be achieved by choosing appropriate passbands for observation, and the rms error expected for the Uranus temperature profiles obtained from the occultation light curves is calculated. It is suggested that observers of this occultation should record their data digitally for optimum time resolution.

    Description: High-time-resolution photoelectric measurements of the occultation of Epsilon Gem by Mars were obtained with the 36-in. telescope at Goddard Space Flight Center. Temperature profiles as a function of number density have been determined by inverting the immersion and emersion light curves on the assumption of a pure CO2 atmosphere. For number densities between 10 to the 13th and 10 to the 15th power per cu cm, the temperature varies in a wavelike fashion about a mean value near 150 K. These temperature profiles agree well with those derived from airborne observations by Elliot et al. (1977), indicating that the atmospheric features producing the excursions in the temperature profiles extend for at least 100 km along the Martian limb.

    Description: Trace-element concentrations in separated minerals and rock fragments from a coarsely crushed and sieved sample of medium-grained lunar basalt are determined by high-precision instrumental neutron activation analysis for three main purposes. These are: (1) to test a previously proposed model for describing trace-element behavior during solidification of a silicate liquid under conditions of a closed system; (2) to compare trace-element concentrations among different size fractions of a comminuted basalt; and (3) to investigate small-scale heterogeneity within a single medium-grained basalt. It is found that an excellent mass balance for the whole rock is attained in terms of the trace-element concentrations of the component minerals and mesostasis, that the mixing model describing this mass balance yields a superior modal analysis for the whole rock, and that different size fractions of the coarsely crushed basalt vary in mineral composition. The closed-system model is shown to account properly for the average behavior of the trace elements during solidification of the basalt, and values of distribution coefficients are obtained for incompatible elements in that rock.
