Notes: Abstract Trifluoromethanesulphonic acid monohydrate CF3SO3H.H2O and its aqueous solutions have been evaluated as an electrolyte for methanol electro-oxidation. The performances of conventional noble metal catalysts in the pure monohydrate are very poor compared with those in 3 M sulphuric acid. This is contrary to previously published literature data, and possible reasons for the discrepancy are given. In aqueous solutions of CF3SO3H at concentrations between 10 and 50%wt. considerably improved performance is obtained and at 60° C the activities of the catalysts are in most cases slightly higher than in 3 M H2SO4. In addition the poisoning effect of acid radicals is considerably less in CF3SO3H than in H2SO4 solutions. Above 60° C, however, the aqueous CF3SO3 anion decomposes to produce sulphur, which poisons the noble metal catalysts. Carbon-13 NMR studies of the CF3SO3H/H2O/CH3OH system were carried out at 20 and 37° C. From the results it was concluded that no significant ester formation occurred between CH3OH and CF3SO3H.H2O at these temperatures. Earlier published data on1H NMR studies of these solutions had indicated that 100% of the methanol was involved in ester formation with the acid. A critical analysis of this1H NMR work is given. Cyclic voltammetric characterization of catalysts in 10 and 25%wt. aqueous CF3SO3H solutions gave similar results to those in 3 M H2SO4; however, at concentrations of 50% wt. the acid decomposed at 0.0 V to produce a sulphur species that poisoned the catalyst. The conclusion of the work was that while aqueous CF3SO3H solutions produced promising catalyst performance up to 60° C the slight improvement in performance over 3 M H2SO4 would not offset the greater expense of the CF3SO3H. In addition, it was suspected that the long-term stability of the aqueous solutions even at 60° C might be poor.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Extensive dyke swarms have been identified in basement rocks inland from Suakin with NW, N-S, and E-W trends. Petrographic examination and the results of ten XRF analyses of dykes near Erkowit indicate that they belong to a tholeiitic hornblende microgabbro-microdiorite suite. Eight whole rock K-Ar isotopic analyses suggest two possible periods of emplacement at 616±18 Ma. and 660±19 Ma. ago. These are the first geochemical-geochronological data for Sudanese dykes, and suggest an association with the N.E. African igneous ring-complex province.

Notes: Abstract A simple and specific medium consisting of chitosan, trypticase, Tween-80 and agar is devised to isolate the organisms directly from the clinical specimens and to produce germ tubes and chlamydospores for rapid differentiation and identification of Candida albicans from other closely related Candida species. By manipulating the incubating conditions, the specific phase of the organism can be produced in liquid or on solid medium at different time intervals to study the physiology of the organism. Many methods and media have been proposed in the past for identification of Candida albicans and to differentiate this from the closely related species of Candida (5–8, 15). Taschdjian, Burchall&Kozinn (15) showed that C. albicans produces germ tube within an hour or two when it is grown in human or animal serum or serum substitutes. The specificity of this germ tube test was later confirmed by various workers by using different media (3–5). The distinctive feature that differentiates C. albicans from other species is the production of chlamydospores (14). However, in all these studies three types of media were required to isolate the organisms from clinical specimens and to produce germ tubes and chlamydospores for identification. Recently studies have shown that a single medium can be employed to produce both structural components of the organism from the primary isolation medium but the preparation of the medium is more exhaustive (1) and time consuming (13) than the medium to be described here. The present investigation was therefore undertaken to develop a simple and specific medium to isolate the organism directly from the clinical specimens and to produce various morphological phases of Candida albicans to differentiate from other closely related Candida species for clinical diagnosis and to provide a medium to study the physiology and metabolism of the organism under in vitro conditions.

Notes: Abstract The phosphotungstic acid-chromic acid (PTA-CrO3) stain, putatively specific for the plasma membrane of plants, has been used in an attempt to monitor the distribution of this membrane in a 20,000 x g particulate fraction from Cucurbita hypocotyl hooks. On discontinuous sucrose gradients, the relative distributions of the phytochrome and PTA-CrO3-positive vesicles present in this fraction appear to be correlated. When intact tissue is stained, however, other components, in addition to the plasma membrane, react positively to the stain. These components include prolamellar-body membranes, lipid droplets, and ribosomes. This lack of specificity calls into question the reliability of the technique for the unequivocal identification and accurate quantitation of plasma-membrane fragments in isolated particulate fractions. The present data do not, therefore, provide unambiguous evidence that phytochrome is associated with plasma membrane in tissue homogenates from Cucurbita.

Notes: Abstract Principe is one of the volcanic centres comprising the Cameroun line in West Africa. The volcanic rocks can be divided into two stratigraphic units: 1. Younger lava series — basanite and nephelinite overlying. 2. Older lava series — transitional to mildly alkaline basalt and hawaiite. These units lie on a basement of palagonite breccias of tholeiitic affinities. The basic lavas are intruded by plugs ranging in composition from tristanite to phonolite and are overlain by phonolite lavas. These rocks form two chemically and mineralogically distinct suites: 1. Phonolites which evolved by low pressure crystal fractionation of the younger lava series basanitic magma, and 2. Tristanite — trachyte — trachyphonolite suite which may have evolved by high pressure crystal fractionation of the older lava series magma.

Notes: Abstract Bioassay of toxaphene residue from lake sediments with bluegills showed that its toxicity was reduced compared to the toxicity of the original formulation added to the lake for rough fish control approximately 10 months before. It is concluded from these observations that commercial toxaphene formulation is somewhat detoxified in the aquatic environment.

Notes: Summary Cultivars of T. aestivum crossed onto two lines with male sterility induced by the cytoplasm of T. timopheevi gave a high level of restoration in the F1 generation. The ratio of fertile to sterile plants segregating in the F2 generation was consistent with that expected for a single dominant restorer gene. The possible association between this gene and mildew resistance or some other desirable character derived from ‘CI 12633’, a common ancestor of the cultivars used, is discussed.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents some theoretical considerations for the detection of hazards in combinational switching systems. The application of fuzzy models to hazard detection in binary systems is discussed, and this leads to methods of detection for multiple zero and one hazards. Finally, a method for theorem proving applicable to the detection method is presented.
