    Description: Results from recent investigations in the Langley V/STOL tunnel of an externally blown flap and an upper surface blown flap configuration in ground proximity are presented. Comparisons of longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics indicate that in ground proximity, drag is reduced for both configurations, but changes in lift are configuration dependent. Steady state analyses of the landing approach indicate an increase in flight path angle for both configurations in ground proximity because of the drag reduction. Dynamic analyses with a fixed-base simulator indicate that the resultant flight path during landing approach is dependent on the initial flight path angle and the control technique used.

    Description: A combined experimental and computational research program for testing and guiding turbulence modeling within regions of separation induced by shock waves incident on turbulent boundary layers is described. Specifically, studies are made of the separated flow over the rear portion of an 18%-thick circular-arc airfoil at zero angle of attack in high Reynolds number supercritical flow. The measurements include distributions of surface static pressure and local skin friction. The instruments employed include high-frequency response pressure cells and a large array of surface hot-wire skin-friction gages. Computations at the experimental flow conditions are made using time-dependent solutions of ensemble-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, plus additional equations for the turbulence modeling.

    Notes: The azimuthal angular dependence of the depolarized component of the light scattered from spherulitic materials is derived by an algebraic method that avoids the difficult angular integrations of the usual approach. The result appears as a sum of products of two factors, a molecular factor, that depends only on the structure and the scattering angle θ, and a geometrical factor that depends only on the azimuthal angle φ and the scattering angle θ. The molecular factors are evaluated for models of spherulitic structure that assume a constant tilt of the optical polarizability tensor. The radial distribution, in principle, is arbitrary, and an evaluation for the layered spherulite is made. If the tilt angle is ω when the azimuthal patterns depend only on a linear combination of P2(cos ω) and P4(cos ω), where Pn(x) is the Legendre polynomial of order n. In our theory the VH scattering pattern is a four-leaf clover whose axes are restricted by the theory to be at either 0 or 45° to the polarization directions.

    Notes: An infrared absorbance subtraction technique has been used to “isolate” bands in the composite spectrum of semicrystalline polymers according to their crystalline or amorphous character. Amorphous and crystalline spectra for annealed, melt-quenched, and solution-cast poly(ethylene terephthalate) have been separated. The spectra of the amorphous component show an increased intensity of bands associated with the trans configuration of oxygen about the C—C bond when the polymer is annealed. This increased “trans” band intensity reflects the increased proportion of trans structures as a result of annealing. The amorphous trans bands are shifted approximately 1-3 cm-1 from their positions in the crystalline “trans” spectrum. The frequency shift of these bands can be attributed to the differences in chain interactions that exist in the amorphous phase and the crystalline lattice. We have also found that under identical anealing conditions the amorphous phase of the melt-quenched polymer contains an increased intensity of conformational trans bands compared to the sample cast from solution.

    Notes: Neutron transmission of polydimethylsiloxane has been measured as a function of neutron wavelength in the range 4-10 Å, at room temperature. Scattering cross sections per hydrogen atom have been obtained and the slope (12.2 ± 0.2) barns/Å has been derived. Comparison with calibration curves relating the slope to the barrier hindering internal rotation as well as comparison with calculated neutron cross sections using the Krieger-Nelkin formalism for different dynamical situations indicates practically free rotation of CH3 groups about their C3 symmetry axes.

    Notes: Two surface analysis techniques (Rutherford backscattering and surface composition by analysis of neutral and ion impact radiation) have been applied to the study of interfacial copper transport in the oxidation of polyethylene films over copper surfaces. Analysis of films oxidized several thousand hours at 40, 57, and 87°C shows maximum concentrations of copper species in the polymer matrix of ∼0.1M extending to depths of several thousand angstroms. These results, together with previous infrared spectroscopic studies, allow some significant conclusions and hypotheses to be drawn as regards the roles of heterogeneous and homogeneous catalytic processes which occur in the thermal-oxidative degradation of polyethylene-copper systems.

    Notes: An extensive study of the effects of stereoisomeric variations in aromatic polyimide structures on polyimide properties was conducted. The structural variations were incorporated into the polyimides through the use of two complete series of isomeric aromatic diamine monomers, the diaminodiphenylmethanes and the diaminobenzophenones, as well as several pairs of diamine isomers. The ability of the diamines to polymerize was related to the basicities, and thus reactivities, of the amino groups. Diamines with an amino group located ortho to the group connecting the two aromatic rings were successfully polymerized with dianhydrides for the first time to high molecular weight poly(amic acids). The stereoisomeric polyimides were characterized by determining the glass transition temperatures Tg, mechanical properties, and thermooxidative stabilities of thin films of the polymers. The polymers prepared from p-diamines were shown to have the highest softening points and thus, the most rigid molecular structures. Those synthesized from m-diamines had the lowest Tg values, inferring the most flexible molecular backbone. With limited exceptions, the use of diamines with ortho-oriented amine groups failed to improve the flexibility of the polyimides since their Tg values were usually as high as those of polymers made from p-diamines. Only slight differences in mechanical properties of the isomeric polyimide films were attributable to the variations in isomeric structure, except for those properties dependent upon Tg changes, such as elevated temperature mechanical properties. A study of the thermooxidative stability of the polyimides showed little difference between the polymers prepared from the diaminobenzophenones, but marked differences were observed between the individual members of the diaminodiphenylmethane-derived polyimides.

    Description: The paper reports on results of heat-transfer tests conducted on a 1/29-scale model of the X-24C-12I hypersonic research aircraft configuration in a Mach 6 tunnel at a Reynolds number of thirteen million using the phase-change heat transfer technique. Sequences of phase-change heat transfer pattern photographs are presented showing windward side and leeward side heating processes. Theoretical predictions of dimensionless heat transfer coefficients along a data line on lower fuselage and on fuselage side bracket the experimental values. A turbulent heating theory gives good agreement with data when shifted to a new virtual origin.

    Description: Transformation of statistics from a dimensional set to another dimensional set involves linear functions of the original set of statistics. Similarly, linear functions will transform statistics within a dimensional set such that the new statistics are relevant to a new set of coordinate axes. A restricted case of the latter is the rotation of axes in a coordinate system involving any two correlated random variables. A special case is the transformation for horizontal wind distributions. Wind statistics are usually provided in terms of wind speed and direction (measured clockwise from north) or in east-west and north-south components. A direct application of this technique allows the determination of appropriate wind statistics parallel and normal to any preselected flight path of a space vehicle. Among the constraints for launching space vehicles are critical values selected from the distribution of the expected winds parallel to and normal to the flight path. These procedures are applied to space vehicle launches at Cape Kennedy, Florida.

    Description: A laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) was used to determine the flow conditions downstream of an annular cascade of stator blades operating at an exit critical velocity ratio of 0.87. Two modes of LDV operation (continuous scan and discrete point) were investigated. Conventional pressure probe measurements were also made for comparison with the LDV results. Biasing errors that occur in the LDV measurement of velocity components were also studied. In addition, the effect of pressure probe blockage on the flow conditions was determined with the LDV. Photographs and descriptions of the test equipment used are given.
