Notes: A flash photomicrographic method and modified dye-light transmittance technique are employed to measure size distributions and mixing frequencies in a turbulently agitated flow vessel. This liquid-liquid dispersion is nearly spatially homogenous. Mixing frequencies are strongly dependent on impeller speed and moderately dependent on holdup fraction.

Notes: Random search procedures have recently been successfully applied to the optimization of a variety of chemical engineering problems, including optimization of chemical processes by flow sheet simulation. These procedures represent the independent variables as random variables described by probability distributions. The adaptive random search procedure centers the distribution for each variable about the best search point found and examines this region for a better point. Thus, this technique has the ability of continuously moving the search region toward the optimum, which is particularly advantageous in following constraints. This study examines the efficiency of the adaptive random search technique as applied to six different problems, which have been previously solved by various other techniques.

Notes: Bench scale packed columns were used to study the kinetic behavior of biological denitrification. After tracer studies were run to determine flow characteristics, steady state nitrate profiles were determined. A first-order rate expression with an Arrhenius temperature dependence is an adequate model of the reaction for nitrate-nitrogen concentrations of 〈 100 mg/l and temperature of 5° to 20°C. The rate constants are proportional to the packing surface area.

Notes: The hot drawing of extruded composite sheets can be used to control the orientation of both matrix and reinforcing fibers. A study was made of the effect of draw ratio on the properties of an extruded polystyrene sheet containing 0 to 1 percent of short glass fibers. An increase in draw ratio resulted in an increase in fiber orientation. A model of a rigid fiber rotating in an elongational flow field was used to describe the effect of draw ratio on the final orientation distribution. An increase in draw ratio also caused an increase in the amount of fiber breakage. A shear-lag analysis was used to estimate the extent of damage as a function of draw ratio. It was also found that the mechanical properties were dependent upon both the draw ratio and fiber concentration.

Notes: “Hard elastic” polypropylene fibers respond nonlinearly to stress at all strains. Low tenacities at break (less than 1 g/denier), low moduli of elasticity (slopes of stress-strain curves from 2.8 to 28 g/denier), and large breaking extensions (over 800 percent) are characteristic of “hard elastic” fibers. Behavior in simple extension, cyclic extension, and stress relaxation can be represented by a quasi-linear viscoelastic model which uses a continuous relaxation spectrum and a quasilinear relation between stress history T(t)and strain history λ(t): \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ T(t) = T^e [\lambda (t)] + \int_0^t {T^e [\lambda (\tau)]\dot G(t - \tau){\rm d}\tau } $$\end{document} where Te[λ(t)] is the elastic response. When creep data are available, this model should provide a unified representation of experimental observations.

Notes: The thermal and mechanical degradation of glassy polystyrene has been studied by Fourier Transform Infrared, FT-IR, spectroscopy. Using difference spectroscopy we have found that the products formed from these two modes of degradation were significantly different. This result is in contrast with other workers who found similar products for the thermal and mechanical degradation of polystyrene by mass spectroscopy. Our result suggests a reassessment of the thermal activation mechanism for mechanically-induced bond scission. We have also found that the distribution of oxidation products appears to depend upon the environment in which the polymer is mechanically degraded. Finally, we have demonstrated the utility of FT-IR spectroscopy for studying the mechanical degradation of polymers.

Description / Table of Contents: Synthesis and Molecular Structure of a Metal Cluster with Cubane Structure, [η5-C5H5Mo(CO)3HgMo]4(4)The compound [η5-C5H5Mo(CO)3HgMo]4 has been isolated as an additional product of the reaction between [η5-C5H5Mo(CO)3]2, 2-butenyl chloride, and sodium amalgam. The X-ray structure (R = 0·050) analysis of this novel species revealed that the compound has a slightly distorted cubane structure, for the first time the cubane unit being built up by two different metal atoms (Mo and Hg).

Notes: Summary Apple selections with different major genes for resistance to apple scab (Venturia inaequalis) derived from Malus floribunda and M. pumila were crossed with each other. The progenies were screened as young seedlings for their reaction to V. inaequalis race 1. A gene for resistance from M. pumila, causing stellate necrotic (SN) lesions, was epistatic to a second gene for resistance from M. floribunda, causing irregular chlorotic (Chl) lesions. Although in most cases SN, Chl and susceptible phenotypes were clearly distinct, occasionally reactions were difficult to characterize or varied from one inoculation to another. Selected seedlings showing resistant or susceptible reactions were forced to flower in 16–20 months in the greenhouse and test crossed with susceptible cultivars. Test cross seedlings were screened for scab reaction. The presence of both genes for resistance in a resistant plant was indicated by presence of both Chl and SN resistant phenotypes in the test cross progeny. Chi-square analysis of four large progenies produced a good fit to the expected ratio. The use of the forced flowering technique to determine scab resistance genotypes in 28 months demonstrated its value in breeding apples with multiple disease resistance.
