When fed rations ranging from 4 to 29 mg (dry)Spirogyra maxima/g live fish/day, absorption efficiency ofTilapia mossambica increased from 50 to 78%; the youngT. mossambica could not consume and utilize sufficient algae to meet its metabolic energy requirement. 2. On supplementing the algal food with goat liver, the fish consumed not only more food (38 mg/g/day) but also enhanced the absorption efficiency to 94%. 3. Given only the liver pieces, the fish consumed 47 mg-g-day; it displayed 95 and 30% of absorption and conversion efficiencies. However, the fish preyed upon and could consume only 41 mg tadpoles/g/day and convert with 26% (K2) efficiency.
    Notes: Kurzfassung Die Nahrungsausnutzung des herbivoren FischesTilapia mossambica wurde bei unterschiedlichem Futterangebot untersucht. Als Nahrung dienten die GrünalgeSpirogyra maxima, Ziegenleber und lebende Kaulquappen. Mit Algennahrung allein konnten Jungfische ihren Energiebedarf nicht decken. Wurde darüber hinaus Ziegenleber verfüttert, so erhöhte sich sowohl die aufgenommene Nahrungsmenge als auch die Nahrungsausnutzung. Maximale Konversionsraten wurden bei ausschließlich tierischer Kost erzielt.

    Notes: Abstract An investigation has been made to determine the effects that additions of glue and antimony have on the electrowinning of zinc from acid sulphate solutions. In particular, the zinc crystal growth and cathode current efficiencies were studied in an attempt to establish a correlation between morphology and the nature of the additives. Operating conditions of 55 A ft−2#x002A; and 35°C were used for most of the experiments with electrolyte concentrations of approximately 55 gl−1 zinc and 150 gl−1 H2SO4. Additional runs were made at 40,75 and 100 Aft−2 at 30,40 and 50°C in order to verify certain trends. Primarily by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques, it was possible to categorize deposit morphologies according to the type and concentration of the additives. The general effect of antimony was to refine the grain size and cause the basal plane platelets to lie parallel to the substrate. Glue also caused some refinement, but caused the platelets to become aligned perpendicular to the substrate. Level deposits were obtained in the latter case, which would effectively prevent dendritic growths. A relationship between the relative amounts of glue and antimony in solution and the current efficiency was also obtained.

    Notes: Abstract Infrared observations of the Orion nebula have been interpreted by Rowan-Robinson (1975) to imply the existence of ‘giant’ grains, radius ∼10−2 cm, throughout a volume about a parsec in diameter. Although Rowan-Robinson's model of the nebula has been criticized (e.g., Andriesse, 1976) and the presence of such grains in Orion is disputed, we accept,pro tem, the proposition that they exist, and examine in this paper situations in which giant grains could arise. We find that, while a giant-grain component to the interstellar grain density may exist, it is difficult to understand how giant grains arise to the extent apparently required by the Orion nebula model.

    Notes: Abstract We propose that photocycloaddition reactions in molecular complexes in normal interstellar clouds will create unusually large molecules. These may be sufficiently radiation stable to be circulated with the interstellar gas, and so provide convenient nucleation centres for growth of loosely bound grains in dark regions.

    Notes: Abstract A method for analysing line profiles by means of a transform using Bessel functions is described. This yields the stellar rotational velocityv sini, to an accuracy of about ±1 km s−1 for rotational velocities greater than about 5 km s−1, provided that rotation is the major source of line broadening. The theory of the method is a special case of a general theory of linear transforms in data analysis, which is outlined in an appendix.

    Notes: Summary Colchicine-inhibition of polymerization of tubulin from rats, mice, golden hamsters and guinea-pigs was studied to determine if species differences in tubulin sensitivity to colchicine might parallel species variation in colchicine toxicity. It was found that polymerization of tubulin is nearly equally sensitive to colchicine in all four species.
