Notes: An intrinsic, unstructured model has been utilized to describethe startup dynamics of a continuous Caalginate-immobilized Zymomonas mobilis (ATCC 10988) fermentation. This model predicts, at least qualitatively, transients in the fermenter effluent glucose, ethanol, and biomass concentrations as well as radial gradients in immobilized-cell concentration and activity within the gelbiocatalysts. Predicted intrabiocatalyst gradients in immobilized-cell specific growth rate were used to calculate the corresponding gradients in intracellular RNA level based on a reported linear relationship between the two. Mathematical simulations of immobilized biomass concentration profiles and RNA content were verified using a novel, scanning microfluorimetry technique.

Notes: We have used isoluminol steroid hormone conjugates in competitive heterogeneous chemiluminescence immunoassays (ClA) for estradiol, progesterone and estriol in body fluids. The assays did not require prior extraction of the steroid hormone with an organic solvent. Polyclonal or monoclonal antibodies, covalently coupled to polyacrylamide microspheres or adsorbed onto the plastic surface of microtritation plates via an intermediate second antibody, were used as solid-phase. The latter solid-phase system allows rapid processing of incubation mixtures. Sensitivie and reliable direct CIAs for estradiol in serum, progesterone in serum and in saliva and for estriol in saliva have been developed and their clinical utility has been assessed. Sensitivities ranged from 0.54 to 0.04nmol/l, and precision (% CV) ranged from 10% to 16%.

Description: This article describes the design and initial tests of the GPS portion of a system for making seafloor geodesy measurements. In the planned system, GPS antennas on a floating platform will be used to measure the location of an acoustic transducer, attached below the platform, which interrogates an array of transponders on the seafloor. Since the GPS antennas are necessarily some distance above the transducer, a short-baseline GPS interferometer consisting of three antennas is used to measure the platform's orientation. A preliminary test of several crucial elements of the system was performed. The test involved a fixed antenna on the pier and a second antenna floating on a buoy about 80 m away. GPS measurements of the vertical component of this baseline, analyzed independently by two groups using different software, agree with each other and with an independent measurement within a centimeter. The first test of an integrated GPS/acoustic system took place in the Santa Cruz Basin off the coast of southern California in May 1990. In this test a much larger buoy, designed and built at SIO, was equipped with three GPS antennas and an acoustic transducer that interrogated a transponder on the ocean floor. Preliminary analysis indicates that the horizontal position of the transponder can be determined with a precision of about a centimeter.

Description: Results are reported from airborne PAN measurements obtained at altitudes 0-6 km over the continental U.S. and the eastern Pacific during the NASA Global Tropospheric Experiment Chemical Instrumentation Test and Evaluation 2 (CITE 2) in summer 1986. The CITE 2 flights and instrumentation are described, and the results are presented in extensive graphs and characterized in detail. It is shown that PAN is an important reactive N-containing species in the troposphere. Although the PAN mixing ratios were highly variable, in general high mixing ratios of 100-300 parts per trillion by volume (pptv) were found at 4-6 km, and very low ratios (5-20 pptv) were detected in the marine boundary layer. Good correlation was seen between the CITE 2 PAN values and those for O3, NO(y), NO(x), HNO3, C2H6, CO, and CFCl3.

Description: An analysis is presented on the distribution and variability of PAN as well as its relationship with measured chemical and meteorological parameters. The chemicals of most interest for which measurements were available are PAN, NO(x), O3, CO, and C2Cl4. PAN was measured by the electron capture gas chromatographic technique, and the technique for calibrations and measurements are detailed. Data show that significant concentrations of PAN (5-125 ppt) are present during the wet season and this PAN is 1-5 times more abundant than NO(x). PAN levels at different atmospheric locations are discussed, and it is noted that PAN shows evidence of a possible latitudinal gradient in the free troposphere, with values falling rapidly from the northern midlatitudes toward the equator. High correlations between O3 and PAN levels suggest that nonmethane hydrocarbons may contribute significantly to high O3 in the free troposphere. Evidence indicates that virtually all of the NO(x) above 4 km could result from PAN decomposition.

Description: An overview of the measurements of total ozone and ozone profiles by the SBUV/2 instrument on the NOAA-9 spacecraft relative to similar measurements from the solar backscatter ultraviolet (SBUV) and TOMS instruments on Nimbus-7 is presented. During the three-year period from March 14, 1985 to February 28, 1988, when these data sets overlap, it is shown that there have been significant changes in the calibrations of the three instruments that may be attributed to diffuser plate degradation (for SBUV/TOMS) and to the drift of the NOAA-9 orbit to later equator crossing times (for SBUV/2). Though these instrument characteristic changes have effected the absolute values of the trends derived from the three instruments, their geophysical characteristics and response to short-term variations are accurate and correlate well among the three instruments. It is seen that the total column ozone measured by the three instruments shows good agreement with respect to its day-to-day, seasonal, and latitudinal variabilities.

Description: The AMPTE IRM solar wind data are analyzed to determine the relationship between upstream pressure fluctuations and magnetospheric perturbations. It is argued that the upstream pressure variations are not inherent in the solar wind but rather are associated with the bow shock. This conclusion follows from the fact that the upstream field strength and density associated with perturbations are highly correlated with each other, while they tend to be anticorrelated in the undisturbed solar wind, and that the upstream perturbations occur within the foreshock or at its boundary. The results imply a mode of interaction between the solar wind upstream and the magnetosphere whereby density changes produced in the foreshock subsequently convect through the bow shock and impinge on the magnetosphere. Upstream pressure perturbations should create significant effects on the magnetopause and at the foot of nearby field lines that lead to the polar cusp ionosphere.

Description: Calculations of ozone depletion during the 1988/89 Arctic winter using a Lagrangian coupled photochemical-microphysical model are presented. Abundances of ClO in excess of 1 ppbv were observed at the end of the Airborne Arctic Stratospheric Expedition on February 10, 1989. These are shown to be consistent with the removal of more than 90 percent of the reactive nitrogen and the conversion of more than 80 percent of reservoir chlorine to active forms. This chemical state implies that ozone losses of more than 20 ppbv/day can be sustained in heavily denitrified air throughout much of February according to current photochemistry. As much as 74 percent of the loss is calculated to be due to ClO dimer photolysis. Following the warming of the vortex in mid-February 1989, ozone loss through ClO dimer photolysis becomes less effective as the rate of thermal decomposition of the ClO dimer increases. Thus, model results suggest that thermal decomposition of the dimer plays an important role in limiting ozone loss in the Arctic spring.

Description: The model is derived by making least squares fits to magnetic field measurements from four Imp satellites. It includes four sets of coefficients, representing different degrees of magnetic disturbance as determined by the range of Kp values. The data are fit to a power series expansion in the solar magnetic coordinates and the solar wind-dipole tilt angle, and thus the effects of seasonal north-south asymmetries are contained. The expansion is divergence-free, but unlike the usual scalar potential expansion, the model contains a nonzero curl representing currents distributed within the magnetosphere. The latitude at the earth separating open polar cap field lines from field lines closing on the day side is about 5 deg lower than that determined by previous theoretically derived models. At times of high Kp, additional high-latitude field lines extend back into the tail. Near solstice, the separation latitude can be as low as 75 deg in the winter hemisphere. The average northward component of the external field is much smaller than that predicted by theoretical models; this finding indicates the important effects of distributed currents in the magnetosphere.

Description: Observations are presented on the variations of extended air shower intensity with an average power of 1.4 x 10,000 and 1.4 x 100,000 particles at sea level. The effect of disintegrating particles and the essential role of cascades formed above the lower third of the atmosphere are examined. However, the authors failed to discover anisotropy of initial particles with an energy of 10 to the 14th power to 10 to the 15th power eV with an accuracy of up to 0.1%.
