Notes: Abstract Fatigue deformation and stage I (shear mode) crack initiation in Ti-6Al-4V alloy test pieces have been studied using optical microscopy. Two types of stage I fatigue crack initiation were observed, (a) alongα/β interfaces and (b) transcrystalline initiation acrossα grains in partly transformed microstructures and acrossαβ interfaces in fully transformed microstructures. The α/β interface cracking occurred predominantly in the low stress regions of the test pieces. These observations suggested that a microstructure with a smallα grain size, to minimize the mean free slip path, and with minimum lengths ofα/β interface, would have a high fatigue strength. Such a microstructure, with anα grain size of 〈 10 μm, and spheroidal or near spheroidalβ particles, was produced by thermo-mechanical processing. The rotating cantilever fatigue strength of this microstructure, ± 670 MN m−2 at 10−7 cycles, compares with fatigue strengths in the range ± 480 to ± 590 MN m−2 for commercial Ti-6Al-4V bars.

Notes: Summary This note concerns the proof of a certain symmetry relation of the Onsager type which holds for certain theories of mixtures. Roughly speaking, it is shown that if the momentum supplies are allowed to depend upon constituent accelerations, then the entropy inequality forces these quantities to be related to the free energy of the mixture in a special fashion. It is shown that in a linearized isotropic theory this special relation forces a certain set of material constants to obey a symmetry relation of the Onsager type. Mixture theories which are special cases of the one studied here have been proposed in the literature.

Notes: Summary The fine structure of the Minotian gland cell (spherical or granular club cell) and the phagocytic cell of the gastrodermis is described. The Minotian cells characteristically contain distinctive granules which are produced by the Golgi. Inclusion bodies containing membranous remains can also be found in the cytoplasm. The phagocytic cells bear groups of microvilli near adjacent junctions and have a much infolded basement membrane. Near the pharynx these cells contain the rod-shaped apical bodies found in the pharyngeal epithelium. Further into the intestine the cells more characteristically contain numerous phagocytic vacuoles and vacuolar dense bodies. After feeding, a consistent occlusion of the intestinal lumen has been observed. The columnar phagocytes have been shown to phagocytose cellular material and will also take up peroxidase and thorium oxide. The substances initially appear in the apical phagosomes. Acid phosphatase activity has been detected in the phagosomes after feeding. The enzyme is packaged in the Golgi and occurs in Golgi vacuoles and lysosomes of similar dimensions (morphologically vacuolar dense bodies). The fusion of lysosomes with phagosomes has been demonstrated histochemically.

Notes: Summary In this paper we consider a mixture of chemically reacting materials with memory. After stating the constitutive assumptions we adopt the usual postulate of fading memory and determine the restrictions which the Second Law of Thermodynamics places on the response functions. Subsequently, we examine the behavior of acceleration waves propagating in such a mixture which is initially in a state of thermochemical equilibrium. We also distinguish between the cases when the equilibrium state is weak or strong, and determine their effects on the wave behavior.

Notes: Summary Selective cell autolysis and deletion is described in the normal adult planarian. This appears to be a common feature and the sequence of events leading from cytoplasmic vesiculation and peripheral lysis to complete cellular breakdown is described. — In lysing cells acid phosphatase activity can be demonstrated in the cytoplasm as well as in lysosome like vacuoles and occasionally in the Golgi apparatus. The role of cell autolysis and deletion in tissue regulation is discussed.

Notes: Summary The fine structure of the planarian epithelium, as revealed in stereo and transmission electron microscope studies, is described. The distribution of cilia and sensory receptors is examined and a new type of cup-shaped receptor is demonstrated. The extension of the parenchymal gland cells on to the epidermis is investigated, and the structure of the rhabdite-containing epidermal cells and associated basement membrane described. The origin of the epidermal cells in discussed.

Notes: Summary Using a variety of substrates and lead citrate as a capture reagent, alkaline phosphatase has been demonstrated at the fine structural level in the collecting ducts of the protonephridial system ofPolycelis tenuis. The enzyme was found to be associated with a glycocalyx on the luminal surface of the duct and in the Golgi and vesicles in the cells lining the duct. The enzyme has also been demonstrated on the membranes surrounding nerve, muscle, and fixed parenchyma cells at the base of the pharynx. Other positive sites include the goblet or mucous cells and some of the intercellular spaces in the gastrodermis. The significance of these findings is discussed.
