Notes: Polyperfluorobut-2-yne is prepared by a fluoride ion-induced polymerization of hexafluorobut-2-yne. The mass spectrum indicates a regular fragmentation pattern but the ESCA spectrum establishes the structure as a polyene, rather than a crosslinked system, and the occurrence of a shake-up peak assists in this assignment.

Notes: The equilibrium and kinetics of gas sorption by a silicone rubber filled with highly adsorptive molecular sieves was studied. Sorption in this system is by two mechanisms: gas is simply dissolved in the polymer matrix according to Henry's law, while it is adsorbed by the dispersed sieve phase in accordance with a Langmuir's isotherm. The latter effectively immobilizes the gas molecules preventing their further diffusion. All equilibrium parameters were determined experimentally. Immobilization greatly affects sorption kinetics and renders conventional analyses invalid. A theory to account for this process was adapted from a previous analysis by Vieth and Sladek which assumes that the kinetics of adsorption is very fast compared to diffusion. For this situation the kinetics always assume a Fickean form. The experimental data agreed very well with the predictions of this theory in a comparison where all parameters were defined by independent experiments. It was found that a single effective diffusion coefficient describes sorption kinetics, steady-state permeation, and time-lag results once the effects of immobilization are properly accounted for.

Notes: The effects of various polyolefin photostabilizers on the thermal and photodecomposition of model and polymeric hydroperoxides have been investigated, both in the liquid and solid phases. Several extremely effective ultraviolet stabilizers belonging to the metal chelate class can cause the rapid thermal decomposition of model and polymeric hydroperoxides. Although stabilizers did not reduce the quantum yield for polypropylene hydroperoxide photolysis, several additives can scavenge hydroxyl and macroalkoxy radical products which result from hydroperoxide photolytic cleavage. Ultraviolet stabilizers which were found to trap radicals were able to prevent the photodegradation of polypropylene which already contained a significant concentration of hydroperoxide groups. Highly effective polypropylene ultraviolet stabilizers probably operate by a range of mechanisms including hydroperoxide decomposition, radical scavenging and singlet oxygen quenching.

Description: Experimental study of the auditory and visual averaged evoked potentials (AEPs) recorded during hyperoxia, and investigation of the effect of hyperoxia on the so-called contingent negative variation (CNV). No effect of hyperoxia was found on the auditory AEP, the visual AEP, or the CNV. Comparisons with previous studies are discussed.

Description: After 1 week of ambulatory base-line measurement, a group of 8 men 19-26 years of age remained continuously recumbent for 14 days. Studies were continued for 1 week following the prolonged recumbency. Urine excretion rates for a number of constituents were determined 2 days before bed rest, on day 14 of bed rest, and day 6 after bed rest. Blood plasma samples were also obtained at these times, and analyzed for several enzymes. On day 14 of bed rest significant increases were observed in urine excretion of total osmotically-active substances, magnesium, calcium, phosphate, creatinine, hydroxyproline, and 17-OH corticosteroids. A decrease occurred in urinary glucose excretion. Plasma levels of alkaline phosphatase and LDH-3 were depressed, while plasma GPT was elevated. Many of these changes persisted on day 6 after bed rest, and are interpreted as concomitants of the disuse atrophy of the musculoskeletal system that characterizes prolonged bed rest and weightlessness.

Description: Paired-comparison and magnitude estimations of the subjective noisiness or unacceptability of noise from fixed wing jet aircraft and simulated noise of VSTOL aircraft were obtained from groups of subjects given different instructions. These results suggest that VSTOL noises can be evaluated in terms of their noisiness or unwantedness to people with reasonable accuracy by units of the physical measures designated as PNdBM, with or without tone corrections, and dBD sub 2. Also, that consideration should be given to the use of D sub 2 as an overall frequency weighting function for sound level meters instead of the presently available A weighting. Two new units of noise measurement, PLdB and dB(E), used for predicting subjective noisiness, were found to be less accurate than PNdBM or dBD sub 2 in this regard.

Notes: Single crystals of cellulose triacetate II (CTA II) free of crystallization solvent can be grown from dilute solution in mixtures of dibenzyl ether and n-tetradecane. Good results are obtained by using a polymer fraction with a degree of polymerization of 60 and a mixture of 70% n-tetradecane and 30% dibenzyl ether at 245°C. The lamellar crystals produced are lozenge-shaped with the longer diagonal parallel to the a axis of the lattice and with {110} as the growth faces. Twin growth occurs frequently with {110} as a twinning plane and less frequently with {210}.

Notes: The birefringence of an object is usually obtained from its retardation. For an object of variable refractive index and optic axis orientation, a matrix procedure should be used for relating the retardation to the birefringence. There are many cases in the literature where this correct procedure has not been used. The correct procedure is illustrated for the case of a polymer spherulite.

Notes: The glass-transition region of crosslinked polymers prepared from poly(1,2-propylene phthalate fumarate) and styrene was studied using a torsion pendulum. The glass-transition temperature and the modulus in the rubbery region of these polymers were analyzed in terms of the crosslink density. The styrene concentration at which the maximum crosslink density occurs, as estimated from the viscoelastic data, is found to be in agreement with estimates made by other workers using chemical methods.
