Notes: Abstract A study has been made of the galvanostatic polarization behaviour of porous zinc electrodes as a function of electrode surface area. Correlations have been established between the electrode polarization parameters and surface areas as measured by BET and methylene blue adsorption methods.

Notes: Abstract The thelytokous triploid midge Lundstroemia parthenogenetica (Diptera: Chironomidae:Chironominae), 3n = 9, is always found to be heterozygous for two inversions and a deletion. Parthenogenesis is maintained by an apomiotic restitutional oogenesis as found in the subfamily Orthocladiinae. This mechanism is compared with other groups exhibiting a restitutional or disordered first division. Possible modes of evolution of the apomictic restitutional system, origin of triploidy in apomictic forms, and chromosomal polymorphisms are discussed.

Notes: Summary Mechanistic principles from engineering, meteorology, and soil physics are integrated with ecology and physiology to develop models for prediction of animal behavior. The Mojave Desert biome and the desert iguana are used to illustrate these principles. A transient energy balance model for animals in an outdoor environment is presented. The concepts and relationships have been tested in a wind tunnel, in a simulated desert, and in the field. The animal model requires anatomical information and knowledge of the thermoregulatory responses of the animal. The micrometeorological model requires only basic meteorological parameters and two soil physical properties as inputs. Tests of the model in the field show agreement between predicted and measured temperatures above and below the surface of about 2 to 3°C. The animal and micrometeorological models are combined to predict daily and seasonal activity patterns, available times for predator-prey interaction, and daily, seasonal and annual requirements for food and water. It is shown that food, water and the thermal environment can limit animal activity, and furthermore, the controlling limit changes with season. Actual observations of activity patterns and our predictions show close agreement, in many cases, and pose intriguing questions in those situations where agreement does not exist. This type of modeling can be used to further study predator-prey interactions, to study how changes in the environment might affect animal behavior, and to answer other important ecological and physiological questions.

Notes: Summary Two of 14 male American kestrels died after 14 and 16 months on a diet containing 2.8 p.p.m., wet weight, p,p′-DDE. The brains of the two birds contained DDE residues of 213 and 301 p.p.m. compared with 14.9 p.p.m. (range, 4.47–26.6 p.p.m.) (wet weights) for 11 of the adult males which were sacrificed after 12 to 16 months on dosage. Autopsies of the two birds compared with autopsies of the sacrificed birds, revealed other characteristics typical of DDE poisoning. Neither bird, when autopsied, displayed characteristics which would suggest that they died of causes other than DDE poisoning.

Notes: Summary Cell walls of Schizochytrium aggregatum and Thraustochytrium sp. were mechanically isolated and subjected to chemical analysis. On a dry weight basis the cell walls contain 21–36% carbohydrate and 30–43% protein. The principal sugar (〉95%) of the Schizochytrium wall is l-galactose, while the Thraustochytrium cell wall contains l-galactose, d-galactose and xylose with l-galactose predominating. Ultrastructurally the cell walls of both organisms consist of a laminated structure which yields thin, flexible, nearly circular scales (0.5–1.1 μ in diameter) upon sonic disintegration. Structures presumed to be developing wall scales are found within cisternae of the Golgi apparatus in both organisms. The chemical composition and method of formation of the cell wall in these two protists is distinctly different from that found in the Saprolegniales (Oomycetes), the group with which these organisms have hitherto been aligned.
