Description: The research is reported which was conducted to develop devices for measuring vibrations and deflections of parts, such as impellers, shafts, turbine wheels, and inducers in operating turbopumps. Three devices were developed to the breadboard stage: ultrasonic Doppler transducer, flash X-rays, and light-pipe reflectance. It was found that the X-ray technique is applicable to the shaft assembly and the turbine seal of the J-2 pump, and the light-pipe-reflectance device appears to be ideal for cryogenic pump sections.

Description: The fabrication of two shear web test elements and three large scale shear web test components are reported. In addition, the fabrication of test fixtures for the elements and components is described. The center-loaded beam test fixtures were configured to have a test side and a dummy or permanent side. The test fixtures were fabricated from standard extruded aluminum sections and plates and were designed to be reuseable.

Description: On November 14, 1971, Mariner 9 was decelerated into orbit about Mars by a 1334 N (300 lbf) liquid bipropellant propulsion system. This paper describes and summarizes the development and in-flight performance of this pressure-fed, nitrogen tetroxide/monomethyl hydrazine bipropellant system. The design of all Mariner propulsion subsystems has been predicted upon the premise that simplicity of approach, coupled with thorough qualification and margin-limits testing, is the key to cost-effective reliability. The qualification test program and analytical modeling are also discussed. Since the propulsion subsystem is modular in nature, it was completely checked, serviced, and tested independent of the spacecraft. Proper prediction of in-flight performance required the development of three significant modeling tools to predict and account for nitrogen saturation of the propellant during the six-month coast period and to predict and statistically analyze in-flight data.

Description / Table of Contents: Contributions to the Chemistry of Sulphur. 113. The Effect of Impurities on the Electrical Conductivity of Molten SulphurThe electrical conductivity of molten sulfur in the range up to 200°C was analysed on samples which were specially purified as well as doped with paraffin, phenanthrene, benzidine, benzil, bromine, and iodine. The current flow below 160°C results from electrophoretically migrating impurities and by interaction with the impurities ionized molecules, whereas at higher temperatures conduction is caused by electrons. At the minimum of viscosity of the molten sulfur (154,5°C) the conductivity shows a maximum, which is shifted by impurities especially halogens up to 10°C towards lower temperatures. The relation between the electrophoretic conduction in the sulfur melt and the viscosity, which determines the mobility of the charged particles, is discussed.

Description: Nonlinear least squares techniques can be used to determine effective thermal conductivity values from experimental data. Comparisons between measured and predicted conductivity values indicate that the analytically determined values can be used with confidence in performing thermal protection system analyses. A study was performed to compare the relative efficiencies of different minimizing techniques; the method of Peckham was the most efficient.

Description: A digital computer program for design and analysis of heat pipes which contain non-condensible gases, either for temperature control or to aid in start-up from the frozen state, is presented. Some of the calculations which are possible with the program are: (1) wall temperature profile along a gas-loaded heat pipe, (2) amount of gas loading necessary to obtain desired evaporator temperature at a desired heat load, (3) heat load versus evaporator temperature for a fixed amount of gas in the pipe, and (4) heat and mass transfer along the pipe, including the vapor-gas front region.
