    Description: Description of the instrumentation of a probe designed for atmospheric studies on other planets and designated PAET. The probe was launched on June 20, 1971, near Bermuda in a trial experiment for measurements of the structure and composition of the terrestrial atmosphere. The instrumentation included accelerometers, pressure and temperature sensors, a mass spectrometer, and a radiometer. The measurements, carried out during the descent of the probe from an altitude of 90 km into the sea, were a success.

    Description: Comparison of crystal oscillators to the rubidium stabilized color burst is made easy and inexpensive by use of the color bar phase meter. Required equipment consists of an unmodified color TV receiver, a color bar synthesizer and a stop watch (a wrist watch or clock with sweep second hand may be used with reduced precision). Measurement precision of 1 x 10 to the minus 10th power can be realized in measurement times of less than two minutes. If the color bar synthesizer were commercially available, user cost should be less than $200.00, exclusive of the TV receiver. Parts cost for the color bar synthesizer which translates the crystal oscillator frequency to 3.579MHz and modulates the received RF signal before it is fed to the receiver antenna terminals is about $25.00. A more sophisticated automated version, with precision of 1 x 10 to the minus 11th power would cost about twice as much.

    Description: The Princeton telescope-spectrometer on the OAO spacecraft Copernicus scans stellar spectra with a resolution of about 0.05 A between 950 and 1450 A, and twice this in first order between 1650 and 3000 A. The pointing during several minutes is steady within .02 sec, and the measured photometric precision in the shorter wavelength range is limited only by the statistics of photon counts, with 14-sec counts of about 1000 on an unreddened B1 star, m(v) = 5.0, at 1100 A. In the 1650-3000 A wavelength range, phototube noise resulting from cosmic rays makes observations difficult on stars fainter than m(v) = 3.0.

    Description: A fixed-baseline millimeter-wave interferometer, operating initially at 13.5 mm, has been put into operation at the Hat Creek Observatory as the first step in the development of a two-element aperture synthesis telescope. The first system consists of a 3-m antenna and a 6-m antenna spaced 265 m apart. Large receiver bandwidths may be used at high frequencies, and this system employs an intermediate frequency bandwidth of about 400 MHz. The instrument has been used to derive accurate absolute positions of interstellar water vapor sources, to study Mercury, Venus, and Mars, and to make crude maps of a few complex continuum sources. The synthesis telescope, the next stage, has two 6-m antennas which can be located at various stations on a T-shaped track. The east-west leg is 300 m and the north-south leg is 200 m, permitting full synthesis for sources on the equator and at declinations as low as -30 deg as well as at high declinations.

    Description: Image quality criteria are defined and mathematically formulated for the prediction computer program which is to be developed for the Viking lander imaging experiment. The general objective of broad-band (black and white) imagery to resolve small spatial details and slopes is formulated as the detectability of a right-circular cone with surface properties of the surrounding terrain. The general objective of narrow-band (color and near-infrared) imagery to observe spectral characteristics if formulated as the minimum detectable albedo variation. The general goal to encompass, but not exceed, the range of the scene radiance distribution within single, commandable, camera dynamic range setting is also considered.

    Description: This paper considers some basic problems relating to automatic data base generation from imagery, the primary emphasis being on fast and efficient automatic extraction of relevant pictorial information. Among the techniques discussed are recursive implementations of some particular types of filters which are much faster than FFT implementations, a 'sequential similarity detection' technique of implementing matched filters, and sequential linear classification of multispectral imagery. Several applications of the above techniques are presented including enhancement of underwater, aerial and radiographic imagery, detection and reconstruction of particular types of features in images, automatic picture registration and classification of multiband aerial photographs to generate thematic land use maps.

    Description: The Multispectral Scanner carried by the ERTS-1 satellite (launched on July 23, 1972) is a very high resolution line scanning imaging radiometer operating in the visible and near infrared spectral regions. The instrument contains optical surfaces that are exposed to both direct and reflected sunlight, and the reflectivity and transmission of some of these surfaces have decreased in orbit. Details of the optical system are explained, and data on the degradation are reviewed as a function of both spectral interval and time in orbit. The history of the scanner during testing (when hydrocarbons from an external source may have been deposited on the optical surfaces) is also examined, and a mechanism is postulated for the observed degradation in orbit.

    Description: Polarized and red- and blue-filter photographs of zodiacal light obtained by Apollo 17 are analyzed. Attempts were made to identify the cause of subtle change in the observed light and determine the dust composition of the light. A comparison of red and blue images indicates such changes may be caused by particle size distribution and range, number of particles along any given line of sight, particle surface characteristics including dielectric compared to metallic properties, and variations of the parameters as a function of distance from the sun.
