Description: A sensitive carbon monoxide detector, developed specifically for spacecraft use, is described. An instrument range of 0 to 60 ppm CO in air was devised. The fuel cell type detector is used as a highly sensitive electrolysis cell for electrochemically detecting gases. The concept of an electrochemical CO detector is discussed and the CO oxidation behavior in phosphoric and sulfuric acid electrolytes is reported.

Notes: The method of stochastic (Monte Carlo) simulation is employed to determine variable process performance of a 545 Mg/d ammonia plant. Operating conditions and equipment reliability are varied in a flow sheet simulation model of the process. Probability distributions of the plant production capability and failure times are generated. These data agree closely with the operating experience of an actual ammonia plant.

Notes: Pronounced effects of thermal treatment on the properties of graphite fiber/polycarbonate and glass fiber/polycarbonate composites have been demonstrated and explained. At 20 volume percent loading of random-in-a-plane, discontinuous fibers, both specimen strength and modulus in both fiber systems were found to increase dramatically upon molding above 260-265°C, whereas only the graphite system was further improved by subsequent annealing. In the latter case, property improvement is due to generation of a crystalline innerlayer at the interface, which apparently transfers the stresses more effectively from fiber to fiber. Regardless of the type of fiber, molding at 275°C (slightly above 260-265°C, the melting point of crystalline polycarbonate) results in improved properties due to better wetting of the fibers by the resin. Hot forming of graphite reinforced polycarbonate composites between the molding and annealing steps takes advantage of the higher processability of the unannealed material in addition to providing increased modulus and strength in the final molded article.

Notes: The physical structure of a number of styrene-butadiene copolymers were investigated via dynamic mechanical and swelling studies on uncrosslinked and gamma-radiation cross-linked films that had initially been solvent cast from toluene or methyl ethyl ketone. The mechanical behavior of these films before and after crosslinking was found to depend on the material history as well as the chemical structure of the copolymer, in agreement with observations made by other experimental techniques. A simple morphological interpretation was given to the dynamic mechanical spectra as a function of radiation dosage and a limited discussion of the swelling behavior is included.

Notes: The flow pattern of a polyethylene melt in the working gap of a disc-type extruder has been visualized. It is shown that there is complex circulating flow in the working gap of the extruder. The flow lines are spirals of Archimedes. An investigation into the qualitative picture of the flow of a polyethylene melt in rotational devices of the “plate-plate” and “cone-plate” type showed that in such devices a complex circulating flow is also realized and the flow lines are spirals of Archimedes.

Notes: Trypsinized cells of newborn mouse cerebellum have been separated by velocity sedimentation at unit gravity in shallow gradients of Ficoll. The two main technical difficulties were formation of gels around the dissociated cells and clumping of cells before and during the sedimentation procedure. These were solved by adding DNase to the dissociation medium and with holding serum, respectively. Proliferating cells of the external granular layer separated according to size differences in the cell generation cycle. Identification of Purkinje or other early-forming neurons was made by labeling them with 3H-thymidine on their birthdays. Many of the fractions contain viable cells capable of aggregating in culture.

Description: A two-coordinate optical-mechanical scanning device (OMSD), the operating unit of which is a scanning disk, with directional and focusing optics and a board, on which the data carrier is placed, is examined. The disk and board are kinematically connected by a transmission mechanism, consisting of a worm and complex gear drive and a tightening screw-nut with correcting device, and it is run by a synchronous type motor. The dynamic errors in the system depend, first, on irregularities in rotation of the disk, fluctuations in its axis and vibrations of the table in the plane parallel to the plane of the disk. The basic sources of the fluctuations referred to above are residual disbalance of the rotor and other rotating masses, the periodic component of the driving torque of the synchronous motor, variability in the resistance, kinematic errors in the drive and other things. The fluctuations can be transmitted to the operating units through the kinematic link as a flexural-torsional system, as well as through vibrations of the housing of the device.

Description: On Mars, the Mariner observations show a twenty-fold variation in the amount of ozone, depending on the presence or absence of another minor constituent, water vapor, in the atmosphere. In the evolution of earth's primitive atmosphere, the formation of an ozone layer may have played an important role in the prebiotic chemistry that took place on the surface. The seasonal formation and disappearance of ozone in the contemporary Martian atmosphere may be of consequence in any prebiotic chemistry that may be occurring there.
