    Description: Discussion of laboratory measurements which indicate that the reaction of the thermalized HO(2) radical with CO is exceedingly slow and that this reaction should not, therefore, be of any significance in atmospheric chemistry. The large discrepancy between the new results and data obtained earlier by Westenberg and de Haas (1972) is explained in terms of the reacting hydroperoxyl radical being in a non-Boltzmann distribution in the former study. It appears that the most important reactions of thermalized HO(2) in the atmosphere are those involving the trace gases of NO and sulfur dioxide.

    Description: Rate constants for the reaction H + H + M - H2 + M, with M = H2, He, and Ar were measured over the temperature range 77 to 298 K. Hydrogen atoms were produced by thermal dissociation and absolute atom concentrations were measured through use of self-balancing, isothermal catalytic probe detector. The specific rate constants were 8.1 + or - 0.4 x 10 to the minus 33rd power, 7.0 + or - 0.4 x 10 to the minus 33rd power, and 9.2 + or - 0.6 x at 298 K for M = H2, He, and Ar respectively; these values rising to 18.5 + or - 2.2 x 10 to the minus 33rd power, 12.0 + or - 1.5 x 10 to the minus 33rd power, and 27.4 + or - 4.6 x 10 to the minus 33rd power cm to the 6th power/molecules sq/sec at 77 K. for the equivalent deuterium atom process with D2 as the third body, the rate constants are 6.1 + or - 0.3 x 10 to the minus 33rd power cm to the 6th power/molecules sq/sec at 298 K and 15.1 + or - 1.0 x 10 to the minus 33rd power cm to the 6th power/molecules sq/sec at 77 K. These values are compared with previous experimental measurements and with recent theoretical calculations.

    Description: The green alga Botryococcus braunii, implicated in the formation of certain geological deposits, produces unusual isomeric C34H58 alkenes, botryococcene and isobotryococcene, during a particular physiological state. A structure for botryococcene is suggested, taking into account NMR techniques, oxidative degradation, and established biosynthetic principles. Botryococcene appears terpenoid in origin.

    Description: Experimental demonstration of the possibility to gain access to sublayers of uncombined titanium through an inhibiting surface film in titanium bulk sublimator pumping by adding a thin layer of titanium to an apparently occluded surface. Though most of the work described was directed toward more effective utilization of titanium in bulk sublimation pumping for small positive-ion accelerators, the results presented should be of interest to others concerned with hydrogen pumping in general and the problems associated with inhibiting films.

    Description: Mass spectral analyses were made of gases desorbed from carbon samples at increasing temperatures up to 2200 K. Samples were initially outgassed above 2000 K, exposed to air for several hours at room temperature, and then tested in ultrahigh vacuum following a 24-hr bake at 300 C. Four forms of carbon tested were pyrolytic carbon, Grafoil, vitreous carbon, and pyrolyzed-phenolic fibers. The equivalent of several monolayers of gas (mostly H2 and CO) are evolved from all of the carbons except vitreous carbon. Less than a monolayer of gas is evolved from vitreous carbon during outgassing to 2000 K.

    Description: The concentrations of major and trace elements have been determined in igneous rocks from Apollo 15. All materials analyzed have typical depletions of Eu except for minerals separated from sample 15085. Four samples have concentrations of trace elements that are similar to those of KREEP. The samples of mare basalt from Apollo 15 have higher concentrations of FeO, MgO, Mn, and Cr and lower concentrations of CaO, Na2O, K2O, and rare-earth elements (REE) as compared to the samples of mare basalt from Apollos 11, 12, and 14. The samples can be divided into two groups on the basis of their normative compositions. One group is quartz normative and has low concentrations of FeO while the other is olivine normative and has high concentrations of FeO. The trace element data indicate that the samples of olivine normative basalt could be from different portions of a single lava flow.
