    Notes: Sodium cellulosates were prepared by reacting premercerized cotton fabrics with sodium salts of selected alcohols. The degree of conversion to the cellulosate was related to the Taft polar substituent constant, σ*, of the alkoxide R group. Increase in size of the R group in the alkanol series did not decrease the degree of cellulosate formation. The extent of reaction of the cellulosates with 2-chloroethylidiethylamine in tertiary butanol to form diethylaminoethyl cellulose (DEAE-cotton) did not increase with the sodium ion content of the starting cellulosate substrate.

    Notes: The degradation and biocompatibility of seveal commercially available glasses, glass-ceramics, and ceramics have been evaluated in soft tissue. Tissue compatibility was investigated by histological and toxicological determinations. Materials degration was evaluated by weight loss and surface replica electron microscopic techniques. High lead and arsenic-selenium-sulfur glasses are found to be unsuitable materials for implantation due to high corrosion and toxicity. Certain borosilicate glasses are also found unacceptable because of severe corrosion. Fused quartz, aluminosilicates, certain borosilicates, alkali resistant glass, soda-lime glass, titania frit, arsenic trisulfide, lithium and magnesium aluminosilicate, glass-ceramics, and calcium-fluorapatite all appear to be well tolerated and seem acceptable for soft tissue implantation on the basis of the present data. Because of the lack of sensitivity of weight change as a parameter to measure low corrosion rates, we have no data on which to estimate the actual corrosion rate. The detailed changes in surface structurte produced during the corrosion process only provide information about the corrosion mechanism and may not be correlated with the corrosion rate. A more sensitive method to study low corrosion rates in glasses may be to use radioactive tracer techniques to measure the loss in radioactivity of glasses when implanted in the peritoneal cavity rather than subcutaneously.

    Notes: High-molecular-weight poly-L-alanine dissolved in hexafluoroisopropanol exhibits infrared, ultraviolet, circular dichroism, and optical rotatory dispersion spectra which are unique and unlike any other previously reported polypeptide spectra. Strong evidence that a helical conformation is present is shown by the high degree of hypochromism in the 187mμ absorption peak and by the positions of the amide infrared bands. The CD and ORD spectra are also similar to those of α-helical polypeptides, though important qualitative and qualitative differences are observed. To explain the novel spectra, which are not mixtures of the spectra of previously reported polypeptide conformations, a new α-helix-like conformation is proposed. The postulated conformation (a doubly hydrogen-bonded helix) is a distorted α-helix in which the peptide carbonyl groups point slightly out from the helix axis and are hydrogen bonded simul taneously both to the NH of the fourth peptide residue to the carboxyl terminal side (as in the classical α-helix), as well as to a solvent molecule's hydroxyl hydrogen.

    Notes: The finite element method is applied to the solution f seepage problems where both electrokinetic and hydrodynamic forces occur. The resulting system of coupled equations is used to solve both the steady state and transient conditions in a one-dimensional system and compared with the theoretical result. An analysis is then made of a more complex two-dimensional problem where the application of electro-osmosis may be used successfully to prevent piping.

    Notes: A change in the degree of vulcanization in a carbon black-filled rubber is shown not to affect the change of in-phase shear modulus with strain amplitude, provided the amount of filler is kept constant. Similar results are found with the change of out-of-phase modulus and phase angle with strain amplitude. A similar value of change of in-phase shear modulus with strain amplitude (G′0 - G′∞) is found for a vulcanized and unvulcanized tire tread rubber; this behavior is attributed for the breakdown of the secondary three-dimensional carbon black aggregated network. Detailed consideration is given to other factors such as hydrodynamic, shape factor, and relaxation effects which contribute to the difference between the shear modulus of the gum rubber and the filled rubber when all the carbon black structure has been broken down. The consequence of the breakdown of the secondary aggregated structure of carbon black are considered in terms of factors affecting heat build-up in tires.

    Notes: The thermal decomposition and resultant disposal of waste poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) is facilitated by preliminary exposure to ionizing radiation, such as energetic electrons, in an oxygen atmosphere. The results of isothermal and temperature-programmed thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis, and effluent gas analysis in nitrogen and in oxygen indicate that the major effect of irradiation is to render PVC increasingly susceptible to oxidation. The presence of oxygen during heating enhances the decomposition. Crystalline order in PVC is destroyed by irradiation.

    Notes: Studies were performed using pure cultures of A. acrogenes and E. coli and a heterogeneous microbial population growing in carbon-limited chemostats with glucose as the sole carbon and energy source. A two-level factorial experimental design was employed to test the hypothesis that the concentration of growth-limiting substrate in a chemostat is controlled by the growth rate alone and is independent of the concentration of substrate entering the reactor. The pure culture experiments showed that the conclusions depend upon the measurement employed for growth-limiting substrate. When the concentration of glucose was measured directly, the hypothesis was found to be true within the limits of the study (500-1500 mg/liter). However, if the chemical oxygen demand (COD) test was used as the measure of growth-limiting substrate the hypothesis was found to be false. When heterogeneous cultures were employed the hypothesis was false regardless of the technique used to measure the concentration of growth-limiting substrate. Nevertheless, it was possible to generate regression equations which described the interactions among influent COD, growth rate, and effluent COD with a high level of correlation.

    Notes: The effect of a nonionic surfactant, polyoxyethylenesorbitan monolaurate (Tween 20), on the hen egg-white lysozyme catalyzed lysis of a dried cell suspension of Micrococcus lysodeikticus is analysed. A rate enhancement of up to 70% is observed in the presence of surfactant at concentrations above the critical micelle concentration. This activity increase may be explained by postulating the existence of a micelle-enzyme complex in which enzyme molecules are bound to micelles with preferential orientation of their active sites.The reaction is found to be second order with respect to substrate. A mechanism is postulated in which a substrate particle is assumed to be an energy-furnishing collision partner to the enzyme-substrate complex. This mechanism correlated data over a wide range of enzyme and substrate concentrations.Data from kinetic, ultrafiltration, ultraviolet, and fluorescence studies provide convincing evidence for the existence of a micelle-lysozyme complex. The results suggest that it is possible that immobilized enzymes mat in general be more reactive than corresponding free enzymes.
