Notes: Abstract A Buekenhout-Tits unital is defined to be a unital in PG(2, q2) obtained by coning the Tits ovoid using Buekenhout's parabolic method. The full linear collineation group stabilizing this unital is computed, and related design questions are also addressed. While the answers to the design questions are very similar to those obtained for Buekenhout-Metz unitals, the group theoretic results are quite different

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Auf Grund der Infrarotspektren der Phosphite von sieben Metallen der I. und II.
Notes: Abstract The IR absorption spectra of seven phosphites of metals of groups I and II of the periodic table were recorded. From the spectra obtained, the values of the parameters characterizing the PO-bond in the compounds studied (splitting of the absorption band of the antisymmetric stretching vibration Δν, force constantk PO, bond lengthr PO and bond orderN PO) were calculated. It was shown that deformation of the phosphite anion by the cations is a function of the size of the latter. The deformation of the anion is revealed most clearly in the values Δν. The values of the bond orderN PO reveal a substantial degree of π-bonding in the PO-bonds of the phosphites studied.

Notes: Abstract  Karyological studies were made on a 6-year-old embryogenic cell line of Abies alba. Embryogenic cells were obtained from a mature zygotic embryo cultivated on modified MCM-medium and subcultured every 3 weeks. Three years after induction, part of the cell line was transferred to media supplemented with 500 or 1000 mg l-1 caseine hydrolysate and 500 mg l-1 L-glutamine. Approximately 3 years after addition of the organic nitrogen to the medium, morphological changes such as malformation of the suspensor cells and a loss of maturation capacity occurred. Chromosome counts revealed that all cells cultivated on medium with organic nitrogen were trisomic. Fluorescent-banding methods and comparison with an euploid cell line showed that the additional chromosome belonged to the group of long, metacentric chromosomes of Abies alba without secondary constriction. Those cells cultured on medium not supplemented with caseine hydrolysate and L-glutamine retained a stable chromosome number of 2n=24. Both normal and deformed suspensor cells were observed. The maturation frequency was very low. The emergence of aneuploidy within one cell line could be the consequence of high selection pressure caused by the different culture conditions.

    Topics: Biology
Notes: Abstract Depth profiles of downward quantum irradiance of photosynthetically available radiation in situ and spectral subsurface irradiance reflectance, obtained from water-leaving radiance, were determined in different inland water types. These included the large, shallow and eutrophic IJssel lagoon in the Netherlands, eighteen Dutch lakes differing in depth and trophic state, and the large, shallow and eutrophic Lake Tai in China. The attenuation coefficient for downward irradiance ranged from 0.7 to 5.4 m-1. An empirical relationship with the backscattering coefficient in the near-infrared waveband, derived from the reflectance, and three spectral reflectance band ratios explained 91% of the variation. The potential assessment of the spatial distribution of phytoplankton production through shipboard optical teledetection of the concentration of chlorophyll-a and the attenuation coefficient for downward irradiance is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Quality improvement such as increased reliability and maintainability are of utmost importance in software development. In this field, which was previously ad hoc and unpredictable rather than customer‐oriented, increasing competition and focus on customer satisfaction have motivated management to put more emphasis on quality issues. This paper provides insight in techniques for dealing with what customers call generic quality attributes and what software engineers call nonfunctional requirements. Since requirements management more than many other disciplines in software engineering need practical insight, examples are provided for dealing with four nonfunctional requirements in large telecommunication systems, namely performance, usability, reliability, and maintainability. Guidelines are presented for specifying, constructing, analyzing, measuring and tracing nonfunctional requirements. Many examples from telecommunication system development show how to specifically and pragmatically deal with nonfunctional requirements. Extracts from three common standards (SEI CMM, ISO 9000–3, BELLCORE suite) are added in the form of a checklist for underlining the importance of proper requirements management from a customer viewpoint.

Notes: Abstract We consider the logical organization of database support for software engineering applications, which has to cope with such requirements as the adequate support of object composition and versioning, the derivation of (consistent) configurations, and the provision of application-specific transactions. A new approach to the organization, manipulation and management of multiversion objects in CASE databases is described and investigated, which clearly distinguishes four relevant concepts: documents, versions, configurations and databases. The approach is formally made precise using the concept ofAND/OR graphs, which renders it possible to cast operations on any of the concepts in terms of graph operations. The levels of abstraction distinguished and maintained throughout the exposition give rise to an appropriate transaction concept: transactions involve graph operations on specific types of objects only; conflicts between transactions can thus be easily identified, and consistency of objects is easily maintained.
