Notes: The polymerization of γ-benzyl glutamate NCAs has been investigated. The results indicate that a coil-to-helix transformation is not responsible for the kinetic data. The results were rationalized by assuming formation of polymer aggregates coupled with the stereoselective adsorption of monomer onto growing polymer prior to reaction. From kinetic data a ratio of equilibrium constants for adsorption was determined. Independent data confirmed the assumption that adsorption of monomer onto polymer occurred. Equilibrium constants were evaluated, and their ratio was found to be comparable with that obtained from the kinetic data.

Notes: Relaxation kinetic experiments reveal general similarity between the mechanism of binding of proflavine to poly A·poly U and DNA. There are differences in detail, however. For example, the rate constants are roughly an order of magnitude smaller for the former, and the thermodynamic parameters of the individual steps are also different. The total heat and free energy for intercalation of free dye are quite similar in the two cases. As was the case with DNA, considerable dye (up to 25% of the bound form) is attached externally to the double helix, even in the strong binding region of the isotherm. Sedimentation measurements on small, rodlike fragments of poly A·poly U reveal a length increase on binding proflavine of a magnitude similar to that found with DNA. This length increase seems to become smaller under conditions (high temperature) where the relaxation measurements indicate a higher fraction of externally bound dye.

Notes: Polypropylene-nylon 6 10 composites were prepared by the in situ polymerization of the nylon monomers on polypropylene films. The adhesion between the nylon and the polypropylene was markedly improved by a brief corona discharge treatment of the films in nitrogen prior to coating. This improvement was demonstrated by an increase in the peel strength of the nylon coating and a decrease in brittleness of photo-oxidized compesites when corona treatment was used. Adhesive bonding between the nylon and substrate was sufficiently strong to cause cohesive failure in the corona-treated polypropylene. Only interfacial failure was observed at untreated surfaces. These effects were demonstrated by electron microscopy of the surfaces produced in peel tests. The effects of corona treatment on adhesive bonding characteristics of surfaces are discussed in terms of the chemical and physical changes observed in treated surfaces.

Notes: The wedge interferometer technique was used to measure the diffusion coefficients for concentrated solutions of polystyrene. A wide range of molecular weights, all monodisperse except for one, and 14 solvents were studied. Reproducibility of the data was demonstrated in the concentrated region, and good agreement with the sparse literature was observed. The experimental results are discussed and analyzed in terms of current knowledge and theories. In the concentrated region, the solvent type plays a significant role in determining the diffusion coefficient. Its effect cannot be explained simply in terms of hydrodynamics nor the molecular structure of the solvent. In cyclohexanone the diffusion coefficient was found to increase with polymer molecular weight up to 100,000 and to become independent thereafter.

Notes: The crystallization from the melt of three sharp polyethylene fractions has been studied at 5 kbar. It has been shown that the thickness of so-called extended-chain lamellae is a function of time, temperature, and molecular weight. There is by no means just the fully extended molecular configuration present. Crystallization is qualitatively similar to that of chain-folded crystals at 1 bar, giving an optimum lamellar thickness which increases with time and decreasing supercooling. Fractional crystallization is widespread and is a major cause of disparate lamellar thickness. Isothermal thickening of lamellae during crystallization has been established directly. Morphological detail suggests further that layers can increase their thickness tenfold over their initial size.

Notes: The mobilities of polymer chain segments in mixtures of rubber and carbon black were investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance. Spin-spin relaxation time (T2) measurements on cis-polybutadiene and ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM) bound rubbers detected at least two relaxing regions: an immobile region and a relatively free region. The molecular motions in the relatively free region are still constrained compared to those of the pure gum.

Notes: The flexural tests on 37 whole equine metacarpus bones are described and the results are given in terms of fundamental material properties as a function of age. The moduli of elasticity, rupture, and failure increase then decrease with increasing age. The rupture and failure deformations decrease with age. The stiffness and fragility indices increase with age. Averaging the data for all ages, the modulus of rupture was 35 ksi, the deflection at rupture was 0.22 inches, and the modulus of elasticity was 1.7 × 10 psi. The flexural rupture strength is about twice the uniaxial compression strength and about five times greater than the torsional strength for whole bone tests. The moduli of elasticity are about the same for flexure and uniaxial compression, and about five times greater than the torsional modulus of rigidity for whole equine bone.

Notes: This paper deals with the performance of current designs of bone fixation plates, mountedon the anterior surface of fractued equine third metacarpale and tested in uniaxial compression. A full factorial experimental design on three variables, plate length, plate width, and fasterner size provided 27 different variations of the basic design. No replicate ests were conducted. All loads were normalized on mid-shaft done gemetry and compared to he ultimate compressive strength that could be expected of a similar bone of the same age. No capacities above 33% of the strength of an unfractured bone were observed.
