Notes: The crystallization kinetics of a high molecular weight fraction of linear polyethylene was studied in dilute solutions of p-xylene, n-hexadecane, and decalin by dilatometric methods. For all solvents and temperatures, the experimental isotherms could be quantitatively described by the Avrami formulation for the complete transformation. This result is unique in the realm of polymer crystallization, since marked deviations from this theory are usually observed in more concentrated systems. The Avrami exponent is found to be n = 4 in all cases. The temperature coefficients of the rate constants are indicative of a nucleation controlled process. The data fit either a two-dimensional or three-dimensional nucleation mode, and a discrimination can not be made between these two cases. The interfacial free energies are found to be independent of the solvent medium. It is also shown that, irrespective of the type of nucleation control governing the kinetics, the same type governs the crystallite thickness of the lamella-like crystals that are formed.

Notes: This paper describes the mass spectra of some di-trimethylsilyl derivatives of aromatic amines. Numerous doubly-charged ions of low relative intensity are found in all spectra. An intense doubly-charged ion is found at m/e [M - 30]/2, whereas the singly-charged counterpart is very small in all cases.

Notes: A mass spectrometric study of the trimethylsilyl derivatives of a group of amino-hydroxy, dihydroxy and dicarboxydiphenyls has disclosed that these compounds produce a number of intense doubly-charged ions ([M - 30]/2, 5 to 27%), for which the singly-charged ions are low or absent. The derivative of 4,4′-dicarboxydiphenyl yields five such doubly-charged ions with relative intensities ⋝ 3%. The fragmentation pathways for this compound have been studied by the formation and mass spectrometry of the trimethylsilyl-d9 derivative.

Notes: The mass spectra of hexanal, heptanal and nonanal variously labeled with deuterium confirm γ-hydrogen migration and β cleavage as the mechanism leading to [C2H4O]+· and [M — C2H4O]+·, although the data on the latter are complicated by contributions from other, related paths. In addition, they show that three other major primary decomposition products, [M — C2H4]+·, [M — H2O]+· and [C3H5O]+, all arise in large part by processes involving γ-hydrogen migration to the oxygen atom. The ethylene lost to yield the first of these products consists of the α and β methylene groups. The loss of ethylene most likely occurs by way of a cyclobutanol intermediate, which, via alternative reaction paths, may well contribute to the yields of the other two products as well. These findings further extend the range of parallelism between photochemical and electron-impact-induced reactions.

Notes: Evidence suggesting elimination of carbon dioxide as a decomposition path for tris(1-phenyl-4,4,4-trifluoro-1,3-butandionato) iron (III) [Fe(btac)3] and tris (1-thienyl-4,4,4-trifluoro-1,3, butandionato) iron (III) [Fe(ttac)3] is presented and discussed. A mechanism is proposed for this reaction. Other examples of CO2 elimination are observed for substituted phenyl Fe(btac)3, tris(1-cyclopropyl-4,4,4-trifluoro-1,3-butandionato) iron (III) and Co(III) (btac)3.

Notes: The uses of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) in studying aspects of polymer fracture are discussed. The sensitivity of EPR is such that all phases of fracture are not amenable to investigation by these means. This paper attempts to define those areas where the authors' experience would indicate that success might or might not be expected. A discussion of the difference between the tensile fracture of drawn polymer fibers, in which strong signals are obtained, and cast and molded materials is given.
