Notes: Summary The properties of several named and unnamed strains of polarly flagellated “hydrogen bacteria” are described and compared with those of related autotrophic and non-autotrophic species. Two new species ofPseudomonas are described: one, a yellow-pigmented hydrogen bacterium,P. palleronii Davis; the other, a non-autotrophic, non-pigmented species,P. delafieldii Davis.

Notes: Summary The secondary phloem of 3 species of the Taxodiaceae and 13 species of woody dicotyledons was examined for the occurrence of nuclei in mature sieve elements. Nuclei were found in all mature sieve cells of Metasequoia glyptostroboides, Sequoia sempervirens and Taxodium distichum, and in some mature sieve-tube members in 12 of the 13 species of woody dicotyledons. Except for nuclei of sieve cells undergoing cessation of function, the nuclei in mature sieve cells of M. glyptostroboides, S. sempervirens and T. distichum were normal in appearance. The occurrence and morphology of nuclei in mature sieve-tube members of the woody dicotyledons were quite variable. Only 3 species, Robinia pseudoacacia, Ulmus americana and Vitis riparia, contained some mature sieve elements with apparently normal nuclei.

Notes: Summary Cyanide (CN) and dinitrophenol (DNP) rapidly depolarize the cells of oat coleoptiles (Avena sativa L., cultivar Victory) and of pea epicotyls (Pisum sativum L., cultivar Alaska); the effect is reversible. This indicates that electrogenesis is metabolic in origin, and, since active transport is blocked in the presence of CN and DNP, perhaps caused by interference with ATP synthesis, that development of cell potential may be associated with active ion transport. Additional evidence for an electrogenic pump is as follows. (1) Cell electropotentials are higher than can be accounted for by ionic diffusion. (2) Inhibition of potential, respiration, andactive ion transport is nearly maximal, but a potential of −40 to −80 mV remains. This is probably a passive diffusion potential since, under these conditions, a fairly close fit to the Goldman constant-field equation is found in oat coleoptile cells.

Notes: Summary Cnidoblasts derived from the dedifferentiation of gland cells in the regenerating isolated gastrodermis of Hydra are capable of nuclear and cytoplasmic division. The daughter cell containing the nematocyst apparently develops normally. The fate of the other daughter cell remains obscure, but it is believed that it is also capable of developing a nematocyst. Only a single bi-nucleated cnidoblast was observed and it was in the process of degeneration. It is suggested that at least in the present system, cnidoblasts are derived not only from interstitial cells but also from pre-existing cnidoblasts.

Notes: Abstract Traditional measures of sediment size (mean, sorting, skewness, etc.) contain less information than the original weightpercent histogram from which they are computed. For purposes such as mapping, summary statistics are necessary, but little is known of the relative efficiency of traditional measures. By multivariate methods, the relative efficiency of sediment-size descriptors may be analyzed and sediment distribution patterns may be investigated, utilizing the histogram directly. The statistic most efficient for classification of sediments is one which is least variable within a sediment type and most variable between types. The statistic most useful from a practical standpoint is one that strikes a balance between ease of measurement and any resulting loss in efficiency. Principal components analysis of sediment-size data from Barataria Bay, Louisiana, suggests that the first principal component is as efficient as any traditional statistic, and can be approximated with no loss in efficiency by the sand percent in samples. Analyses of variance show that the sand percent is the most efficient as well as the most useful statistic for characterizing Barataria sediments. Only one sieve separation is necessary to obtain essentially the same information as obtained from more laborious traditional analytical techniques.

Notes: Abstract This paper begins with a simple normative model of the policy process in terms of the information and authority relationships and flows required to meet two assumed criteria: those of democracy (informed citizen participation) and intelligence (anticipation and learning). The model contains four actors: elite, public, anticipatory unit, and monitoring unit. The paper continues with a descriptive summary of the major characteristics of the four actors which work against the realization of the information and authority connections which our criteria require. The final section suggests general ways in which computers, especially interactive computing using graphics, can lessen the force of the inhibiting characteristics The general suggestions are supplemented by three illustrative applications: inductive data analysis (IDEA), mapping the urban system (the Kankakee project), and eliciting and enriching citizen preferences (the Smithsonian and the PLATO projects).

Notes: Abstract The Graetz problem in heat transfer is extended to the analysis of mass transfer in circular ducts for the cases where wall resistance is included and where non-Newtonian fluids that obey Casson's equation are considered. The eigenvalues and fluid bulk coefficients are presented for the fluid between the extremes of Newtonian and slug flow. It is found that for fluids which are only slightly non-Newtonian, such as blood, which is closely approximated by Casson's equation, the mass transfer rate can be predicted by Newtonian fluid analysis without appreciable error. Some experimental results give support to the theory.
