    Notes: The feasibility of the use of porous ceramic materials in the permanent repair of skeletal defects was studied from the standpoint of physiological compatibility and in growth of natural bone. High-fired calcium aluminate samples in the form of quarter-inch diameter cylindrical pellets containing interconnecting porous networks were implanted in vivo into canine femurs for 4-, 11-, and 22-week periods. The implants had 65% porosity with pore size falling within one of five distinct ranges from less than 45 μ to about 200 μ in diameter.Thin sections were prepared by grinding (poly) methyl methacrylate-mounted cross sections of the femurs containing the implanted ceramic samples and adjacent soft tissues. Tissue-prosthetic compatibility was determined using standard histological thin section procedures, electron microbeam probe examinations, autoradiographic techniques, microfadiographic techniques, microchemistry techniques, and ultra-violet fluorescent techniques. Optical microscopic evaluations of each section showed the ceramic samples to be bound lightly by natural bone and gave no detectable signs of tissue incompatibility. Minimum pore size for significant ingrowth of natural bone was indicated to be between 75 and 100 μ.

    Notes: An analysis of the two-dimensional temperature field of a square column embedding a heating cylinder is presented. The analysis leads to a solution in finite series which gives rise to rapidly converging numerical results. The series coefficients computed for the extreme case of the cylinder being a line find a way of parametrization, which then furnishes the solutions for finite cylinders up to the case of the cylinder diameter being half of the column thickness. Results in five-digit accuracy are presented. The method is simple and direct. In addition, it retains the same concise formal solution for a variety of boundary conditions.

    Notes: Manning, Wolf, and Keairns' model for continuous flow-stirred tank reactors has been extended to include adiabatic as well as isothermal operation. The adiabatic, steady state yield of a continuous flow-stirred tank reactor was measured experimentally using the second-order, homogeneous, exothermic reaction between sodium thiosulfate and hydrogen peroxide. Model predictions of overall tank yield agreed closely with the data, thus verifying the applicability of this model to explain the effects of operating variables such as impeller size, impeller type, agitator speed, feed location, feed concentration, and flow rates.

    Notes: There is a rapid and a slow stage in the decrease of reduced specific viscosity versus time (aging) for a solution of a high intrinsic viscosity polyacrylamide in water. The rapid stage is irreversible and has a fairly high temperature coefficient. Results of the latter type are usually associated with a weak-link scission mechanism, but they can also be reconciled with a disaggregation mechanism. A disaggregation mechanism is also indicated for the rapid stage by an increase in the first-order rate contant with a decrease in the polymer concentration or an increase in the shear rate and by the absence of the rapid stage during the aging of the same sample in formamide. Chemical changes in the polymer are suspected as being responsible for the RSV change during the slow stage in the aging of the high intrinsic viscosity polyacrylamide and also in the aging of a polyacrylamide of low intrinsic viscosity. The aging of the polyacrylamide of high intrinsic viscosity is paralleled by a decrease in the ability of the polymer to increase the subsidence of kaolin suspensions. This decrease in the flocculation activity is attributed to a weakening of the interparticle bridging by a change from a strong adsorption of the bridging polymer to two particles to a strong adsorption of the bridging polymer to one particle but weak adsorption of the bridging polymer to the other particle.
