Notes: Summary In excised roots of barley and tomato plants, lowering the water potential of nutrient solutions to-10.4 and-20.4 atm decreased the uptake of bromide and phosphorus while increasing the loss of these ions to the external solutions. Lowering the water potential greatly increased the rate of loss of potassium and bromide from the cytoplasm, but the increases in loss from the vacuoles were much smaller. The results suggest that the mechanisms of ion uptake are not affected by low water potential and that the decrease in ion accumulation is caused by the increased leakage from the cells.

Notes: Summary The relationship between intercellular adhesion and the total surface area of cells per unit volume of tuber was investigated with samples from seventeen varieties grown in the field and eight varieties grown in pots. A direct relationship was found with a correlation coefficient of 0.63 (significant atP=0.001).

Notes: Abstract The effect of deformation and heat-treatments on magnetisation of superconducting Mo/34 at.% Re alloy was investigated. The microstructure was studied using optical and electron microscopy. The values of the parameterκ of the GLAG theory were determined by using three different methods, and they are found to be in accordance with some of the predictions of the Maki theory. The results show that in deformed specimens the magnetic hysteresis is mainly due to the interaction of Abrikosov supercurrent vortices with dislocation tangles; both twin boundaries and grain boundaries are relatively ineffective in causing flux hindrance. The hysteresis observed after annealing has been explained in terms of the occurrence of dislocation rearrangement and the precipitation of the sigma phase. Flux-pinning by dislocation tangles has been treated as a special case of pinning by normal particles and a magnitude of the resulting pinning force is obtained. The experimental results are compared with the predictions of a theoretical model of flux-pinning.

Notes: Abstract Measurements of blood flow and ventilation per unit lung volume have been made by scanning the lung with scintillation counters after the intravenous injection or inhalation of the radioactive gas, xenon-133. The count rate at any level in the lung after display on a conventional recorder is laborious to read off and the calculations of blood flow per unit lung volume at each level are tedious. A data logger has been specially designed for parallel collection of these count rates on punch tape in a form acceptable for analysis by an Elliott 4100 computer. A detailed description of how information was presented to the data logger and examples of the punch tape output are given. A comparison of regional blood flow calculated by automated and non-automated methods is shown.

Notes: Abstract This paper deals with variational and optimal control problems with delayed argument and presents analogs of the classical necessary conditions for optimality for problems in (n + 1)-space. It is mainly concerned with the functional $$J(y) = \int_a^b {f[t,y(t\user2{--}\tau ),y(t),\dot y(t\user2{--}\tau ),\dot y(t)] dt} $$ There are no side conditions; τ is a positive real number; andy is a continuous piecewise smooth vector function havingn components. The fundamental lemma of the calculus of variations is used in deriving an analog of the Euler equations. The usual construction is utilized in obtaining analogs of the Weierstrass and Legendre conditions. Also found is a fourth necessary condition involving the least proper value associated with a boundary value problem related to the second variation. A sufficient condition is obtained by the use of a simple expansion method. The last station of the paper outlines an extension of a maximal principle obtained by Hestenes to control problems which involve delays in both the state variable and the control variable.
