Summary 1. Deoxidizing treatment of steel, which determines the nature and shape of nonmetallic inclusions, has a definite effect on its fatigue strength. 2. Deoxidation with calcium suicide increases the fatigue limit of cast medium-carbon steel and extends the limited endurance range. 3. A substantial increase in fatigue strength of medium-carbon steel is produced by a heat treatment which relieves thermal stresses and leads to the formation of a finely crystalline structure. 4. By using suitable deoxidants, selecting the best method of deoxidation and applying a suitable heat treatment, it is possible to improve the mechanical properties of cast steel, particularly its fatigue strength, to a level comparable to that of rolled steel.
