Notizen: The influences of conditioning treatments and surface topography on the heparin adsorptivity and the thromboresistance of a high-strength, impermeable, isotropic, pyrolytic carbon were investigated. The results of the adsorption studies indicate that the adsorption of heparin on such carbon surfaces is near the amount required for monolayer formation. The adsorbed heparin is rapidly elutriated in plasma. The heparin adsorption is not enhanced by a pretreatment with benzalkonium chloride. There was no relationship between the amount of heparin adsorbed on these materials and their compatibility with blood. Polishing, for example, which reduced heparin adsorption, enhanced the tromboresistance of these carbons, and while chemisorption of oxygen markedly reduced their thromboresistance, it did not influence the amount of heparin that could be adsorbed. In vivo tests showed that polished and outgassed, impermeable isotropic carbons deposited at low temperatures were significantly thromboresistant without the exogenous application of heparin. Examples of applications of these new materials in experimental valves are presented.

Notizen: A comparison has been made of the intrachain potential energy of an infinite straight α-helix of poly-L-alanine with that of the distorted form adopted in a coiled coil conformation. The energy terms included were the van der Waal's, electrostatic, hydrogen-bond, and the rotational potential terms. The results indicate that the potential energies of the structures investigated are almost the same, and so a transformation from one state to another may occur without significant changes in potential energy. Particular care has been taken to ensure that the electrostatic and van der Waal's interaction terms are fully convergent. The values obtained for the α-helix were compared with those already published, and some significant differences were found.

Notizen: Experiments with different ABS resins indicate that thermal stability in this class of polymers is dependent upon the ratio of styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer to polybutadiene rubber in the graft phase; resins containing more highly grafted rubber are more resistant to thermal oxidation. It is also found that in outdoor aging there is a minimum carbon black loading for these resins below which light screening is not effective.

Notizen: Fractional crystallization was used to separate a commercial, predominatly isotactice, unstabilized polypropylene into fractions of relatively low and relatively high atacticity, but of similar molecular weight. IR spectroscopy was used to follow the photo-oxidations of films formed from these fractions during irradiation in air with light of wavelengths greater than 3000 À. The major oxidation products included hydrogenbond hydroperoxides and carbonyl compounds. Films of constant tacticity, but varying morphology were prepared by quenching from the melt. No distinct correlation was found between sample photostability and morphology, as indicated by film density. Films of low atactic content were found to undergo faster photo-oxidation than films of high atactic content, irradiated under identical conditions. This effect is believed to be due to the occurrence of a stereo-dependent step (or steps) in the oxidative chain, and not due to differences in sample morphology. The possible nature of the stereo-dependent steps is considered in terms of well-established oxidative chain processes. The effects of polypropylene polymorphism on oxygen permeability are briefly considered.

Notizen: A novel gas-flow method of measuring the diffusion, solubility, and permeability of gases and vapors in polymer films is described. The specific advantages of this system over the time-lag technique are discussed. Transport data, including activation energies and enthalpies of solutions, for hydrogen and deuterium in poly(vinyl fluoride) are presented, and the effects of the glass transition and of orientation on the observed transport rates are discussed.

Notizen: The interchain packing energy of two-, three-, and four-stranded α-helical ropes has been investigated. Poly-L-alanine was chosen as a model, and the interchain energies were calculated for various combinations of chain sense as a function of interchain distance, axial orientation and displacement. For comparison, the packing energies of the analogous assemblies of straight α-helices were also computed. Only those systems in which the chains were equivalent, i.e., related by line symmetry, were considered. The results indicate that for structures in which all the chains are equivalent the interchain packing energy favors the coiled coil arrangements.

Notizen: Gel-point calculations based on the theory of polyesterification proposed by Flory do not agree with the experimental values even when Bobalek's concept of gel point as the first formation of infinite molecules (microgel) is used. Resins covering the range 30-60% oil length were prepared and examined by electron microscopy for the presence of microgel particles. The extent of reaction at which microgel forms is discussed in relation to the concept of equal reactivity. The conditions necessary for the formation of microgel particles and the significance of these observations to the basic assumptions used in developing the theory of polyesterification are discussed.

Notizen: The influence of aluminosilicates and magnesium silicates on the free-radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate is discussed. The relationship between the structure of the mineral and its ability to inhibit radical reactions is considered, and it is concluded that aluminum in octahedral coordination is mainly responsible for the inhibition. Mechanisms which account for the termination reaction are proposed and supported by studies of the reaction of stable free radicals with the minerals.

Notizen: The present paper describes the results of a preliminary study of certain physical and thermal properties of benzhydrylated cotton yarns. The 200-yd. lengths of 7/2 yarn consisting of purified mercerized cellulose were reacted in a special reactor to various degrees of substitution from DS 0.31 to DS 1.22 with benzhydryl bromide in a mixture of equal volumes of 2,6-lutidine and dimethylformamide. The products were examined for tensile strength at break, which decreased only slightly with substitution; ultimate elongation, which was relatively uniform at 60-70% of the control yarn; and tenacity, which decreased with substitution largely due to added weight. The energy of rupture remained relatively constant at about 50% above the control. Tensile stiffness decreased progressively with substitution to about 25% of the control. Density decreased 10-11% with substitution. Crystallinity of the cellulose largely disappeared with substitutions above DS 1, and the lattice of benzhydryl cellulose began to appear. Stiffness, elastic recovery and work recovery were measured on 5-in. specimens of the yarn in an oven while they were subjected to repeated extension to about 1-2% and relaxed as the temperature was raised twice to 200°C. and lowered. During the heating phase of the first cycle the yarn underwent considerable heat adaptation. However, during the cooling phase and during both heating and cooling phases of the second cycle, the yarns showed generally favorable behavior. Attempts are made to interpret the results in terms of molecular modifications.

Notizen: Corrosion resistance is particularly important in medical treatments requiring implantation of metallic objects in the human body. Unfortunately, weight loss measurements and other conventional corrosion testing techniques are insufficiently sensitive and difficult to adapt to in vivo environments. The linear polarization technique can be used to remotely meaure the corrosion rates of metals implanted in tissue using needle probes. The principles of this technique are reviewed and the results of tests performed on steel, cobalt, and molybdenum implanted in experimental animals are discussed.
