Notes: The patch test is shown to be contained in the variational formulations of the finite element methods at the assembling level, all of which require the vanishing of the virtual work of interface connection loads. By a systematic introduction of stress generating functions, attention is drawn to the fact that any given finite element model can be assembled in two different ways: either by identification of a set of boundary displacements (leading to the direct stiffness method), or by identification of a set of local stress function values (leading to the dual direct flexibility method). Looking at any conjugate couple (generalized displacement-generalized surface traction) at an interface, one is strongly transmitted, the other weakly. Discretization of the zero virtual work condition at an interface of plate bending models, by means of Legendre polynomial expansions, allows a systematic construction of so-called ‘non-conforming’ elements that pass the patch test. They are in fact identified with weakly conforming, but strongly diffusive, hybrids, and the lowest degree element (quadratic) is in fact the Morley constant-moment element. Examples are given for higher degree displacement fields. The case of plate stretching elements can be handled by duality, the difficulties being here associated with the requirements for diffusivity. Non-diffusive elements that pass the zero interface virtual work test can be constructed systematically and are identifiable with weakly diffusive, but strongly conforming, hybrids of the type first proposed by T. H. H. Pian.

Notes: Abel's integral equation is the governing equation for certain problems in physics and engineering, such as radiation from distributed sources. The finite element method for the soultion of this non-linear equation is presented for problems with cylindrical symmetry and the extension to more general integral equations is indicated. The technique was applied to an axisymmetric glow discharge problem and the results show excellent agreement with previously obtained solutions.

Notes: Two methods are presented for the automatic selection of a cycle basis leading to a sparse flexibility matrix for the analysis of rigid-jointed skeletal structures. The first method having a local approach forms a maximal set of admissible minimal cycles, while the second having a global approach constructs admissible minimal cycles on the ordered chords of a shortest route tree. A cycle ordering algorithm is also given to reduce the band width of the corresponding flexibility matrix.

Notes: The change in standard chemical potential of a number of alkanes on PDMS going from dilute solution to the perfect vapor ΔḠov was measured by gas chromatography over a large range of temperatures. The change in standard chemical potential of the alkane going from the pure liquid to the perfect vapor ΔḠov was calculated from fugacity data. These data were fitted separately to three Taylor's series expansions wherein the (partial) heat capacity of vaporization is zero, constant, and linearly dependent on temperature, respectively. On the basis of statistical and physical arguments it was concluded that the partial excess functions determined by gas chromatography should be described with a temperature-independent partial excess heat capacity.

Notes: A numerical technique, based on a mathematical programming algorithm, is presented for the solution of geotechnical problems where elastic-plastic material behaviour is considered. The proposed approach can be adopted for geotechnical media characterized by any suitable yield condition, accounting, if necessary, for workhardening behaviour. The loading process is subdivided into a series of steps applied to a finite element mesh with geometry and material properties constant along each step, but with possible changes between subsequent steps. As an application some typical geotechnical problems are analysed by means of the proposed algorithm and a comparison is made between the available in situ measurements and the numerical results.

Notes: Some theoretical properties of a semidilute polymer solution (in a good solvent) near a repulsive wall (no adsorption) are discussed. (i) Near a single wall, the existence of a depletion layer (where the concentration is strongly reduced) with thickness equal to the correlation length ξ(c) is predicted. Scaling laws are obtained for the concentration cs at the first layer as a function of the bulk concentration c, and for the concentration profile c(z) at distance z from the wall. (ii) When two parallel walls are separated by a slab of polymer solution (thickness d), there is an attractive interaction between the plates. The range of the attraction is ca. 3ξ(c) and can be varied by suitable choice of concentration. It may lead to destabilization of certain colloidal systems.

Notes: Considering one long chain (N monomeric units) in a homodisperse melt of chemically identical, but shorter, “solvent” chains (P monomers per chain), we propose some tentative scaling laws for the self-diffusion constant D(N) and the relaxation time T(N) of the solute chain. We also discuss the viscosity increment δη due to a small volume fraction Φ of the long chains. We find three regimes of behavior, depending on N and P, and on the distance between entanglement points (assumed smaller than N and P): (A) reptation of the N chain; (B) Stokes-Einstein regime; the solute moves like a usual polymer coil in a viscous fluid of P chains; (C) mixed regime, where D(N) is controlled by reptation, while δη is of type B. Contrary to our earlier belief, we find no significant regime where the process of “tube renewal” could be dominant.

Description: An experimental program was carried out to determine whether spontaneous fluid-dynamic oscillations could create a hazard in gaseous oxygen flow systems by igniting metal contaminants. The particular fluid-dynamic oscillation studied was the resonance-tube phenomenon as it was excited in a tee-shaped configuration representative of configurations found in many industrial flow systems. Pure aluminum was chosen as the candidate material for ignition. The oscillations in the tee-shaped configuration were compared with oscillations driven by choked convergent nozzles and were found to differ markedly. The temperatures generated at the base of the resonance tube were well in excess of 1000 F for both gaseous oxygen and nitrogen. The effect of inert particulate matter introduced into the resonance tube was to increase significantly the measured temperatures. Aluminum in both powder and fiber form was readily ignited within the resonance tube at pressures less than 1200 psia. At higher pressures, the aluminum-oxygen mixture exploded. This investigation confirms the hazardous nature of resonance-tube oscillations as generated in typical piping configurations that use high-pressure oxygen.
