Notes: A discrete version of the quaternionic Cauchy–Riemann equation ∂A=F, where F is Gauss–Poisson white noise, is discussed. On the lattice δZ4 random variables Fδ(δn) and Aδ(δn) are constructed which approximate the corresponding random fields F and A, respectively, in the limit δ→0. In the Gaussian case the random variables Aδ(δn) can be interpreted as the lattice approximation of the free electromagnetic Euclidean potential field whereas in the non-Gaussian case one obtains an approximation of nonlinear interacting electromagnetic quantum fields. Convergence to the continuum limit is proven.

Notes: Use of hard electromagnetic radiation (λ = 0.12 Å) in diffraction experiments, in conjunction with thin crystals in transmission geometry (Laue case), minimizes multiple scattering, often referred to as the 'extinction problem'. A large crystal slab, completely intercepting the incident beam, was used in this experiment. Several structure factors have been measured in LiF and KCl, with greater accuracy than ever before, using the γ-ray spectrometer of the University of Missouri at Columbia. In the case of LiF the results indicates some compression of the valence electron densities, similar to what has been found earlier for NaF. In the case of KCl all reflections agree well with the values calculated from free-atom Hartree-Fock wave functions except for the 004 and 006, which are appreciably weaker than corresponding reflections with similar or identical sin θ/λ values. This result indicates asphericity of the valence electron density. The 111 is also much weaker than the calculated value, indicating that the negative ions are slightly compressed and the positive ions slightly expanded with respect to the free-ion charge densities.

Notes: Abstract An optical bench study has been carried out to assess the effects of both beam alignment and nonconical disturbances in the application of conical shadowgraphy for flow visualization. Conical and quasiconical plastic test models were immersed in a refractive index matching fluid and then examined by shadowgraphy with a conical light beam. The results show that problems of interpretation may arise due to both axial and transverse beam misalignment. Among these difficulties, axial misalignment with positive vertex displacement is the least serious. Also, the effect of a particular nonconical disturbance field was found to introduce fewer difficulties of interpretation than that of beam misalignment.

Notes: Abstract Digital Particle-Image-Velocimetry was applied to investigate particle trajectories in a gas flow past a sphere. The particle displacement was determined by autocorrelation analysis of image sections. To enhance the signal/noise ratio a synthetic image with idealized particle pictures was generated from the real image. The autocorrelation function (ACF) was calculated using the Fast Hartley Transformation (FHT). The desired secondary maximum of this function was detected by an algorithm with subpixel resolution. A data validation step testing the plausibility of the velocity vectors completes the image analysis. Particle trajectories are traced with help of the particles' velocity vectors. The particle deposition on a sphere can be deduced from the course of these trajectories.

Notes: Abstract Infrared and Raman spectra of the basic copper salts malachite, Cu2(OH)2CO3, and brochantite, Cu4(OH)6SO4, as well as of deuterated and 13C substituted samples are presented and discussed in terms of group theory and the hydrogen bonds present. The main results are that (i) the hydrogen donor strengths of the OH− ions are strongly increased due to the very great synergetic effect of the copper ions, (ii) the acceptor strengths of the H-bond acceptor groups (SO4 2-, CO3 2-, and OH− ions) are significantly modified by the linkage and coordination of the acceptor atoms — this complicates true assignment of the OH bands observed to the two and six different OH− ions present in malachite and brochantite, respectively -, and (iii) the Cu — O stretching modes at 430–590 cm−1 and 420–520 cm−1 for malachite and brochantite, respectively, exhibit strong, partially covalent Cu — O bonding.

Notes: Abstract Calcium fertilizers as a dust were tested under laboratory conditions on their effects on small populations (2000 ♀♀, 2 ♂♂) of the Red Hillbuilding Wood AntFormica polyctena. Mixed into the food, the ants didn't show any reactions; however dusted with Calcium, daily mortality increased up to 10 times compared to non treated populations. Furthermore, reproduction and foraging activity were diminished. Additional experiments using one brand of fertilizer but different particle sizes showed that the finer the dust, the more detrimental is Calcium fertilizer to laboratory populations ofF. polyctena.

Notes: Abstract O. antiqua larvae were given as food to two laboratory populations ofF. polyctena (2000–3000 workers and 2 queens each). The ants did'nt perceive L1–L3 as a prey. But they killed 47% (popul. A) and 77% (popul. B) of the L4–L6 after pulling up the long hairs of larvae.
