Notes: A method for determination of surface and bulk diffusion coefficients from measurements of optical density on thin slabs is discussed. In principle the spectral absorption of a substance diffusing from gaseous phase into the slab is measured as a function of time. The limitations of the method and the problem of determination of the diffusion coefficients through the surface and inside the slab are discussed and several methods, including the use of time derivatives of optical density, numerical LAPLACE transformation and successive approximation by least squares are given. Explicit formulae, numerical tables and curves for the relevant functions are given which might be useful in practical applications of the method.

Notes: The kinetics of exchange of protons in 1- and 3-positions of the azulene molecule with heavy water in the gaseous phase at 140° C has been investigated. In the presence of large excess of heavy water the kinetics follows a simple two stage, first order reaction scheme, for which the rate constants have been measured. The hitherto unknown azulene-d1 isotope has been observed spectroscopically and shown to be involved in the reaction as an intermediate do → d1 → d2, with kinetically approximatively equivalent 1- and 3-positions.
