    Description: Some short cores from the shelf at about 800-1000 fathoms on the southwest flank of Eniwetok Atoll penetrated Pliocene deposits with little to no later sediment cover. The Quaternary deposits include much coarse reef debris, particularly the fragments of algae such as Halimeda and other shallow-water material up to several millimeters in grain size, mixed with varying amounts of pelagic Foraminifera. The Pliocene sediments (one may be upper Miocene) are pure pelagic deposits of much finer grain size, consisting of coccoliths and pelagic Foraminifera with no admixture of reef material. Bottom photographs show areas of well-developed ripple marks in coarse sediment (C. J. Shipek, manuscript) apparently formed only in the areas with the veneer of post-Tertiary coarse sediments. A brown impregnation at the top and extending down as mottling for a few centimeters is also usual in the Tertiary sediment of the cores. This seems to consist of iron and manganese oxides and adds somewhat to the induration.

    Materials Problems in Chemical Liquid-Propellant Rocket Systems (1959)

    Description: With the advent of the space age, new adjustments in technical thinking and engineering experience are necessary. There is an increasing and extensive interest in the utilization of materials for components to be used at temperatures ranging from -423 to over 3500 deg F. This paper presents a description of the materials problems associated with the various components of chemical liquid rocket systems. These components include cooled and uncooled thrust chambers, injectors, turbine drive systems, propellant tanks, and cryogenic propellant containers. In addition to materials limitations associated with these components, suggested research approaches for improving materials properties are made. Materials such as high-temperature alloys, cermets, carbides, nonferrous alloys, plastics, refractory metals, and porous materials are considered.

    Study of Plastic Deformation in Binary Aluminum Alloys by Internal-Friction Methods (1959)

    Description: The damping capacity of several aluminum-copper alloys has been investigated during tensile elongation. This damping is shown to depend on strain rate, strain, temperature, alloy content, and heat treatment. A tentative hypothesis, based on the acceleration of solute atom diffusion by deformation-produced vacancies, is proposed to account for the observed behavior. Internal-friction maxima are observed in deformed aluminum and aluminum-copper alloys at -70 deg and -50 deg C. The peaks appear to be relatively insensitive to frequency and alloy content, but they disappear after annealing at temperatures nearing the recrystallization temperature.

    Description: In der Höhle Reichentalloch bei Hirschbach fand sich eine Fauna mit 33 Arten, darunter Anuren bis 38%. Die Fauna konnte in einen frühpostglazialen Auftauabschnitt gestellt werden. Auch konnte innerhalb derselben auf eine Durchwanderung von Pitymys subterraneus hingewiesen werden. Es wurde ein Diagramm-Auszug angefügt, entnommen einem großen Faunen-Diagramm, das aus den bisher in dieser Folge bearbeiteten, prozentual berechneten, ungestörten 30 Fundstellen mit 120 Schichten zusammengestellt worden ist, um die seltenen, aber auffälligen Anuren-Anhäufungen, daselbst eingereiht, als Auftauperioden zu erkennen, wie sie jeder Kältezeit folgten. Auch wurde eine Durchwanderungszeit von Microtus gregalis, der sibirischen Zwiebelmaus, aufgezeichnet; vermutlich auf der Flucht vor der einsetzenden Warmzeit.
