Notizen: Clauses in company articles giving boards rather than shareholders the power to remove directors, can give either the chairman or chief executive the power to retain their tenure even when performance is less than satisfactory. A power holder can simply remove opposition from a board as soon as it is expressed. When used ruthlessly, such power makes it almost impossible for independent non-executive directors to carry out their most important role of monitoring executive directors and removing non-performers at an early stage. Machiavelli claimed that extension of tenure was a prime cause of Rome’s decline. He argued persuasively for fixed terms, with no variation possible. The prohibition of removal clauses, and the introduction of fixed director terms might well increase corporate performance by preventing continued tenure for those who have failed.

Notizen: The central-cell correction has been determined experimentally for the two donor impurities S and Si in GaAs. Data have been obtained for magnetic fields to 39 T, corresponding to γ(approximate)6. The observed behavior is in good agreement with theory. The analysis permits accurate evaluation of zero-field central-cell corrections, yielding 0.110 and 0.059 meV for S and Si, respectively. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Abstract Trapping and monitoring experiments were conducted in the roof spaces of four buildings infested with deathwatch beetle, Xestobium rufovillosum de Geer (Coleoptera: Anobiidae). Data from sticky traps and an ultra-violet insectocutor showed that adult deathwatch beetles were trapped from May to July. The beetles were attracted to natural and UV light, and more beetles were caught on white coloured traps than yellow, blue or red traps. Deathwatch beetles comprised 30–40% of all arthropods caught. The weekly trap catch of all arthropods, including deathwatch beetle, was positively correlated with ambient temperature. Adult beetles flew in buildings at ambient temperatures greater than 17 °C. Arthropods caught in the buildings were categorised as resident, over-wintering or non-resident arthropods. Predatory spiders comprised 13% of arthropods caught and the predatory beetle, Korynetes caeruleus de Geer, was found in all four buildings. There was no evidence of other predators or parasitoids of the deathwatch beetle

Notizen: Abstract A leaf-disc bioassay was used to compare the predation levels of two species of predatory mites (Neoseiulus cucumeris (Oudemans) and Iphiseius degenerans (Berlese)) and a predatory bug (Orius laevigatus (Fieber)), on the thrips Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) and Heliothrips haemorrhoidalis (Bouché), feeding on a range of susceptible plant species from twelve plant families. The predatory bug, O. laevigatus, reduced the number of thrips to a greater extent than the predatory mites and all three predators showed greater levels of predation on F. occidentalis than on H. haemorrhoidalis. The level of predation caused by each predator varied among the species of plants; the variation was greater on the plant hosts of H. haemorrhoidalis than of F. occidentalis.

Notizen: Abstract. Microspores of Brassica napus L. cv. Topas, undergo embryogenesis when cultured at 32.5 °C for the first 18–24 h and then at 25 °C. The first division in heat-treated microspores is a symmetric division in contrast to the asymmetric division found after the first pollen mitosis in-planta or in microspores cultured continuously at 25 °C. This asymmetric division is unique in higher plants as it results in daughter cells separated by a non-consolidated wall. The cytoskeleton has an important role in such morphological changes. We examined microtubule (MT) organization during the first 24 h of heat induction in the embryogenic B. napus cv. Topas and the non-embryogenic B. napus breeding line 0025. Preprophase bands (PPBs) of MTs appeared in cv. Topas microspores in late uninucleate microspores and in prophase figures after 4–8 h of heat treatment. However, more than 60% of the PPBs were not continuous bands. In contrast, PPBs were never observed in pollen mitosis; MT strands radiated from the surface of the nuclear envelope throughout microspore maturation to the end of prophase of pollen mitosis I, during in-planta development and in microspores cultured at 25 °C. Following 24 h of heat treatment, over 95% of the microspores appeared to have divided symmetrically as indicated by the similar size of the daughter nuclei, but only 7–16% of the microspores eventually formed embryos. Discontinuous walls were observed in more than 50% of the divisions and it is probable that the discontinuous PPBs gave rise to such wall abnormalities which may then obstruct embryo development. Preprophase bands were not formed in heat-treated microspores of the non-embryogenic line 0025 and the ensuing divisions showed discontinuous walls. It is concluded that the appearance of PPBs in heat-induced microspores marks sporophytic development and that continuous PPBs are required for cell wall consolidation and embryogenesis. It follows that induced structures with two equally condensed nuclei, do not necessarily denote symmetric divisions.

Notizen: Abstract During the EASE/OXICOA campaign of the NERC ACSOE programme, trichloroethylene and a wide range of man-made halocarbons and radiatively-active trace gases were monitored with high precision and high frequency throughout July 1996 at Mace Head on the Atlantic Ocean coast of Ireland. Trichloroethylene concentrations in concert with many other trace gases became elevated as regionally-polluted and photochemically-aged air masses reached Mace Head. However, as the anticyclonic air masses retreated during 19 and 20 July, trace gas concentrations remained elevated for a significant period. During this 2–4 day period, trichloroethylene concentrations decayed significantly, though the concentrations of the other more chemically-inert trace gases did not. A detailed interpretation of this behaviour using a Lagrangian dispersion model has allowed the estimation of average and peak OH radical concentrations of 3 and 9×106 molecule cm-3, respectively, during the travel from the source areas in the U.K. and the low countries out to Mace Head. Using a simple box model, the available Mace Head measurements, when combined into a detailed chemical mechanism, generated OH radical concentrations which peaked at 7×106 molecule cm-3, in close agreement with the estimates based on trichloroethylene decay.
