Notes: The response of unfertilized sea urchin eggs stimulated with continuous D.C. was studied using cinematographic techniques. As reported by previous workers, the initiation of the response was anodal in polarity and followed a typical strength-duration curve. However, the anodal response may be swelling and/or contraction, depending on the amplitude of the applied stimulus, i.e., the magnitude of the contraction is directly related to the applied stimulus and is a graded response. It is suggested that the phenomena of anodal swelling and anodal contraction represent a continuum of responses based on ion exchange.

Notes: The calcium uptake and ATPase activities of isolated sarcoplasmic reticulum were studied during the first six days of chick skeletal muscle maturation in tissue culture. Statistically significant increases in these activities were observed between the second and the sixth day of maturation. Increases in oxalate-dependent calcium uptake were demonstrated at concentrations of 2.5 × 10-5 M calcium and 10-4 M calcium. Calcium-binding determinations conducted in the absence of oxalate displayed changes manifested by an increase at day 5 followed by a significant decrease at day 6. Increases in total ATPase activity during maturation paralleled the sequential increases in calcium uptake. Calcium-stimulated ATPase activity, however, did not change significantly during periods of marked increase in calcium uptake, suggesting that these activities are dissociated during development of the sarcoplasmic reticulum. These data demonstrate that calcium uptake and total ATPase activity increase during muscle maturation in tissue culture and that these activities are present prior to spontaneous contractions.

Description: Data from two flights of a new superconducting magnetic spectrometer are reported. This instrument was capable of a direct matter-antimatter separation in the cosmic rays. Antimatter events would appear in the spectrometer as trajectories which curve in the opposite direction to common matter, because of their negative charge. A brief description of the equipment and of the characteristics of the instrument is presented, along with the data processing techniques used. A new upper limit on the amount of antimatter in primary cosmic rays has been established. The limits are considerably lower than those for any previous experiment.

Description: The suggestion by Lin et al. (1972) that a distinct spectral feature exists at about 200 keV, which could be due to a neutron-decay electron component of either solar or galactic origin, is examined. Alternative sources models, including production by nearby galactic objects or acceleration at the outer boundary of the solar system, are also considered.

Description: Current analytical and experimental investigations of the influence of surface processes on the rate of permeation of gases through solids are summarized. A brief description is presented of an analytical model that provides an approximate prediction of the dependence of the permeation rate on the rates of surface processes relative to the rate of the diffusion process. Results of experiments indicate that the desorption process of hydrogen from various materials is influenced by surface impurities to the degree that substantial changes in the spatial distribution of the desorbed molecules are observed when the impurities are varied. Except possibly for H-Nb, the permeation measurements indicate that the desorption process is not influenced to the degree that detectable changes in the permeation rates are observed when the impurities and temperatures are varied. On the basis of analysis, it is unlikely that the desorption process will be the rate-controlling step under the conditions of the present experiments.

Description: The spectrum of the total (diffuse and discrete sources) cosmic gamma-ray background over the 0.3 to 27 MeV range was measured with a 7.0 cm diameter x 7.0 cm long uncollimated NaI(Tl) scintillation counter located on a boom 7.6 m from the Apollo 15 service module. Data on cosmic gamma-rays were taken during transearth coast at various boom extensions, detector gains, and with the plastic anticoincidence scintillator enabled and disabled.

Description: The superconducting properties of single crystals of Nb and two alloys of Nb with Mo were investigated by ultrasonic techniques. The results of measurements of the ultrasonic attenuation and velocities as a function of temperature, Mo composition, crystallographic direction, and ultrasonic frequency are reported. The attenuation and small velocity changes associated with the superconductivity of the samples are shown to be dependent on the sample resistivity ratio which varied from 4.3 for Nb-9% Mo to 6500 for pure Nb. The ultrasonic attenuation data are analyzed in terms of the superconducting energy gap term of the BCS theory. A new model is proposed for the analysis of ultrasonic attenuation in pure superconductors with two partially decoupled energy bands. To analyze the attenuation in pure superconducting Nb, the existence of two energy gaps was assumed to be associated with the two partially decoupled energy bands. One of the gaps was found to have the normal BCS value of 3.4 and the other gap was found to have the anomalously large value of 10. No experimental evidence was found to suggest that the second energy gap had a different transition temperature. The interpretation of the results for the Nb-Mo alloys is shown to be complicated by the possible existence of a second superconducting phase in Nb-Mo alloys with a transition temperature of 0.35 of the transition temperature of the first phase. The elastic constants of Nb and Nb-Mo alloys are shown to be approximately independent of Mo composition to nine atomic percent Mo. These results do not agree with the current microscopic theory of transition temperature for the transition elements.

Description: A preliminary mission study of a reusable vehicle from staging to orbit indicates payload advantages for a dual-propulsion system consisting of separate scramjet and rocket engines. In the analysis the scramjet operated continuously and the initiation of rocket operation was varied. For a stage weight of 500,000 lb the payload was 10.4 percent of stage weight or 70 percent greater than that of a comparable all-rocket-powered stage. When compared with a reusable two-state rocket vehicle having 50,000 lb payload, the use of the dual propulsion system for the second stage resulted in significant decreases in lift-off weight and empty weight, indicating possible lower hardware costs.
