    Description: In this paper, we show that the rate of ozone loss in both polar and mid-latitudes, derived from ozonesonde and satellite data, has almost the same vertical distribution (although opposite sense) to that of ozone laminae abundance. Ozone laminae appear in the lower stratosphere soon after the polar vortex is established in autumn, increase in number throughout the winter and reach a maximum abundance in late winter or spring. We indicate a possible coupling between mid-winter, sudden stratospheric warmings (when the vortex is weakened or disrupted) and the abundance of ozone laminae using a 23-year record of ozonesonde data from the World Ozone Data Center in Canada combined with monthly-mean January polar temperatures at 30 hPa.Results are presented from an experiment conducted during the winter of 1994/95, in phase II of the Second European Stratospheric And Mid-latitude Experiment (SESAME), in which 93 ozone-enhanced laminae of polar origin observed by ozonesondes at different time and locations are linked by diabatic trajectories, enabling them to be probed twice or more. It is shown that, in general, ozone concentrations inside laminae fall progressively with time, mixing irreversibly with mid-latitude air on time-scales of a few weeks.A particular set of laminae which advected across Europe during mid February 1995 are examined in detail. These laminae were observed almost simultaneously at seven ozonesonde stations, providing information on their spatial scales. The development of these laminae has been modelled using the Contour Advection algorithm of Norton (1994), adding support to the concept that many laminae are extrusions of vortex air. Finally, a photochemical trajectory model is used to show that, if the air in the laminae is chemically activated, it will impact on mid-latitude ozone concentrations. An estimate is made of the potential number of ozone molecules lost each winter via this mechanism.

    Notes: Nuclear resonance fluorescence excited with continuous electron bremsstrahlung from the 4.3 MV Stuttgart Dynamitron accelerator is used as a nondestructive method to determine the 13C content x of bulk isotopic diamonds (12C1−x〈sup ARRANGE="STAGGER"〉13Cx). The smallest detectable amount of 13C in carbon or low Z matrices is on the order of 0.5 mg. The relative accuracy of absolute mass determinations is about ±7%. Errors are mainly due to uncertainties in the natural widths Γ of the 13C nuclear levels at 3089 and 3684 keV used in the measurements. The results confirm a previous calibration which is based on Raman scattering and the destructive determination of x by mass spectroscopy. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have fabricated scanning probe microscope cantilevers with dimensions 65×11.4×0.25 μm3 and 3×2×0.129 μm3 from GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As heterostructures containing two-dimensional electron gases. Deflection is measured by an integrated field-effect transistor (FET) that senses strain via the piezoelectric effect and provides a low noise, low power displacement readout. We present images of a 200 nm mica grating taken with the large cantilever having a deflection (force) noise 10 Å/(square root of)Hz (19 pN/(square root of)Hz) at T=2.2 K. The small cantilever has a resonant frequency of 11 MHz, a FET gate charge noise of 0.001 e/(square root of)Hz, and is projected to have a deflection (force) noise of 0.002 Å/(square root of)Hz (1 pN/(square root of)Hz) at T=4.2 K. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Intersubband electroluminescence has been investigated in a quantum cascade structure based on vertical transition designed for far-infrared (λ=88 μm) emission. A narrow luminescence peak with a full width at half maximum of 0.7 meV is measured at low excitation currents (30 A/cm2) and low temperature (T=5 K). The electroluminescence efficiency exhibits a strong temperature and current dependence, consistent with an interplay between electron–electron and optical phonon scattering. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Public organizations vary considerably. Yet little attention has been paid to the systematic analysis of this diversity. Drawing on case studies of four public organizations and a survey on all central government organizations in Denmark, variations in tasks, environments, constituencies, and central governance are conceptualized. Public organization tasks can be analysed at three levels ranging from user-oriented outputs, general outputs which can further be divided into policy goals, scope of profile, standard setting and capital accumulation, to the normative base of the public sector. Public organizations vary with regard to the emphasis put on level of output and on how the different aspects of the tasks are interrelated. Variations in constituencies and exchange cycles with the environment are further related to different task profiles. Finally it is shown that central oversight organizations compete with other actors in the public organizations’ environment in the governance of public organizations. From an organizational point of view ‘the state’ appears to have a humble and remote position.

    Notes: Abstract Oxidative stress is implicated in the pathogenesis of several viral infections, including hepatitis, influenza, and AIDS. Dietary oxidative stress due to either selenium or vitamin E deficiency increases cardiac damage in mice infected with a myocarditic strain of coxsackievirus B3. Such dietary oxidative stress also allows a normally benign (i.e. amyocarditic) coxsackievirus B3 to convert to virulence and cause heart damage. This conversion to virulence is due to a nucleotide sequence change in the genome of the benign virus, which then resembles more closely the nucleotide sequence of virulent strains. Although it has been known for many years that poor nutrition can affect host response to infection, this is the first report of host nutrition affecting the genetic sequence of a pathogen. Further research is needed to determine whether poor host nutrition plays any role in the emergence of new viral diseases via alterations in the genotype of an infectious agent.

    Notes: We present an extension of the filter-diagonalization (FD) approach which allows the extraction of accurate bound-state spectra from a time-dependent wave function determined by an approximate propagation scheme. To investigate the method, an approximate wave function is generated by a wave packet propagation on a two-dimensional potential energy surface for the LiCN molecule, employing a second-order differencing integrator with large step size. When applied to this inaccurate wave function, our formulation of the FD technique is capable of yielding eigenenergies considerably more precise than those obtained with the original FD method, while the effort is almost the same. The present FD scheme contains some additional refinements that increase the method's efficiency, accuracy, and practicability. We demonstrate that the accuracy of the FD procedure can be improved by using cosinetype filters. The quality of different variational principles employed to determine the eigenenergies is examined. These variational principles can also be utilized to estimate the error of the energies and intensities inexpensively and reliably. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Neutron reflectivity measurements on polystyrene thin films (6.5–79.0 nm thick) supported on silicon substrates indicate that the mass density is near the bulk value regardless of film thickness. To account for possible inaccuracies arising from sample misalignment, reflectivity measurements were made both from the free-surface and silicon-substrate sides of the thin film, a method termed twin reflectivity. For films spin coated on the hydrogen-terminated silicon surface the relative uncertainty in the density measurement was on the order of 1%, but for films spin coated onto the silicon native-oxide surface the analysis was more difficult because of subtleties in data fitting due to the oxide layer. Nevertheless, within the limits of greater uncertainty, these films also showed no systematic change in density with thickness. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We propose a simple oscillatory model of crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) describing the CO2 uptake and nocturnal acidification of CAM plants by a system of coupled non-linear differential equations. Large differences in the content of metabolite pools are treated using a pseudo-steady-state approach. For the first time, simulations of the CAM cycle investigate its dependence on all three major control parameters simultaneously: temperature, photon flux density and external CO2 concentration. Under stationary conditions in time the model shows either endogenous rhythmicity or two distinct steady states. Stability boundaries are calculated in parameter space.
