Notizen: The need for alternatives to autogenous bone grafts is widely recognized. This study compared the torsional strength of canine femora 1 year after grafting with one of three forms of a collagen/hydroxyapatite/tricalcium phosphate bone grafting material (COLLAGRAFT15), autogenous bone, or no graft. The groups were compared to each other and to the unoperated contralateral femora. Results of torsional testing were evaluated for torsional strength, torsional displacement, total energy to fracture and White fracture mode. Data analysis showed lower torsional strength of the operated vs. unoperated femora with the exception of morsellized COLLAGRAFT15 material, which had higher strength. However, the only difference in the operated groups was that the morsellized COLLAGRAFT15 had greater strength than several groups including the autogenous bone group. There was no difference found in angular displacement between any of the groups. However, there was a difference in the energy to fracture in both strip forms of the COLLAGRAFT15. The final conclusion is that in this model, grafting with COLLAGRAFT15 provided torsional properties at one year postoperatively at least equivalent to autogenous bone. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Although there are many studies which document high metal ion concentrations in clinically retrieved tissues surrounding total joint replacements, most investigations have remained cautious in their interpretation due to the artifactual influences of metal particulate. The possible contribution of polyethylene wear debris to artifactually high periprosthetic metal ion concentration readings has not been previously considered. This study documents the potential role of polyethylene particulate contamination in causing artifactually high metal concentration readings in tissues. The data showed metal ion contamination in the polyethylene was progressive at each stage of exposure to metal: from bar stock preparation, to manufacturing, to in vivo ambulation. The manufacturing and machining processes showed a statistically significant (P ≤ .05) increase in metal ion concentrations in the nonarticulated acetabular inserts over bar stock. The results of this study demonstrate that periprosthetic tissue and synovial fluid metal ion concentration data must be interpreted with caution due to possible artifactual problems associated with metal ion contaminated polyethylene particulate. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Ferromagnetic Ni—Cu alloy wires were characterized in order to obtain well-defined thermoseeds for application in interstitial hyperthermia of prostate cancer. Thermoseeds have been produced which possess Curie points in the therapeutic hyperthermia range, approximately 40 to 50 °C. The effect of thermal treatment and composition on the heating characteristics of the thermoseeds were investigated. The preliminary study shows that the recrystallization is crucial for altering thermoseeds' heating characteristics. Obtaining thermoseeds which behave as desired depends on changes in annealing times and temperatures. One may increase the maximum heating temperature (similar to Curie temperature) by increasing the annealing time and cooling time. Decreasing the lower annealing plateau temperature also increases the maximum seed heating temperature. Higher nickel content compositions did not affect rise time but increased the maximum heating temperature. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Microthane foam, a poly(ester)urethane, used as a covering of some breast implants (Meme or Replicon by Surgitek) degrades readily in phosphate buffer pH 7.4 producing multiple unknown products in addition to 2,4 and 2,6 toluenediamine (TDA). The cumulative weight loss of the foam in buffer was 1.5% at 1 week and 2% at 2 weeks. Multiple peak molecular weights from 105 to 665 000 were found in the aqueous foam extracts following 2 weeks of incubation at 37°C using size exclusion chromatography (SEC). TDA was measured in the foam buffer extracts by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and confirmed by gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy (GC/MS). The total cumulative levels of 2,4 TDA and 2,6 TDA measured were 3 ± 0.65 μg/g of foam and 1.13 ± 0.19 μg/g of foam following 36 days of incubation at 37 °C. Higher amounts, 8.96 μg/g of 2,4 TDA and 3.3 μg/g of 2,6 TDA, were obtained at 50 °C. The cumulative release of TDA in aqueous extracts was found to correlate linearly with time suggesting a slow but continuous production of TDA under neutral conditions. However, less than 0.2 μg/g of TDA was detected as residual TDA in the methylene chloride extracts following up to 60 days at 37 °C. PU foam extracted with methylene chloride under similar conditions showed higher foam weight loss, 4.4 and 5% at 1 and 2 weeks, respectively. The results presented in this study provide further evidence that Microthane undergoes hydrolysis under neutral conditions in aqueous solutions producing TDA and other unknown low molecular weight components and oligomers. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Aluminium microstructures (dots or strips) have been photodeposited on GaAs substrates via the decomposition of a solid precursor, the 2:1 hydride adduct of Al, called trimethylamine alane (TMAA).The dissociation of TMAA, the vapour pressure of which can be varied between 0.4 and 1 mbar by dilution in hydrogen carrier gas, has been achieved via a pyrolytic process using a CW Ar+ laser operating in the visible range (488-514 nm). This decomposition reaction occurs at laser powers higher than 0.3 W, i.e. at laser-induced temperatures higher than 130°C, and leads to the formation of high-purity aluminium strips as observed from Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) data. The deposition rates are in the range 50-1400 Å s-1. The minimum of line resistivity measured versus scanning speed and laser power is 6.5 μΩ cm.The photolytic decomposition of TMAA has been performed at room temperature within the laser spot area using a CW UV laser (intracavity frequency doubler emitting at 257 nm). The formation of aluminium clusters has been observed at very low deposition rates (20 Å s-1). However, these tiny clusters react quickly with oxygen and are transformed into alumina clusters. All these results have been tentatively explained on the basis of the surface reactivity of H2 and TMAA regarding GaAs or Al, as obtained by other workers through surface science techniques and mass spectrometry.

Notizen: A novel non-linear fluorescence (NLF) effect in polar dimethylaminobenzylidene 1,3-indandione (DMABI) crystals is presented and discussed. A single crystal or vacuum-evaporated layer of DMABI excited in the IR region at 1064 nm (by a Q-switched YAG laser) emits red light in the visible region of the spectrum at 600-740 nm depending on the DMABI crystalline modification. This anti-Stokes luminescence shows a quadratic dependence on the exciting light intensity which transforms to a linear dependence at very high excitation intensities. The observed NLF effect under IR excitation is determined by optical transitions into intermolecular charge transfer (CT) states. It has been suggested that the photoexcited singlet 1CT excitations may either interact in a quadratic singlet-singlet (1CT + 1CT) annihilation reaction or, more probably, form long-lived triplet 3CT excitons via a hyperfine interaction effect which may subsequently annihilate in a similar bimolecular fusion reaction (3CT + 3CT). In both cases the excited molecular singlet state S1 is formed and thus the NLF effect is due to singlet-singlet or triplet-triplet fusion of CT excitons. A detailed energy diagram and kinetic description of the model are presented. Quantum chemical calculations of the electronic structure of the DMABI molecule illustrate the dipolar nature of its ground and excited states.

Notizen: Firefly luciferase, luciferin, 1-(3,4-dimethoxy-6-nitrophenyl) elthyl ATP and 1-(2-nitrophenyl) ethyl acetic acid were immobilised in an agarose gel matrix. By illuminating the gel with 350 nm light through a mask, a positive bioluminescent pattern was written on to the gel by releasing ATP in the illuminated areas. The gel was then illuminated with a brpadbnand UV light through a second mask to release acetic acid, lowering the local pH and deactivating the enzyme. This produced a negative image of the second mask superimposed on the positive image of the first mask. The system represents a two-wavelength switch in which one wavelength of light activates the enzyme while a second deactivates it. This demonstrates the feasibility of using biological molecules as logic element in future devices.
