    Notes: The method of normalization is used to develop the J-R curve fracture toughness characterization for polymeric materials. This method can develop J-R curves directly from load vs. displacement records without a need for an on-line crack monitoring system. It was used previously to develop J-R curves for metallic materials and is applied here for the first time to polymer materials. Single edge notched bend specimens of rubber toughened nylon 6/6 and rubber toughened amorphous nylon are used in this study. The J-R curves from the method of normalization are compared with the results obtained from the multiple specimen method of ASTM Standard E813. The results show that the method of normalization gives reasonable J-R curves; both methods show agreement over the early J-R curve region. In addition the JIc values are determined for each method and compared. Based on this work it is suggested that the method of normalization could be used as a general test method to develop J-R curves for polymeric materials.

    Notes: At 75/25 concentration ratio, bisphenol a polycarbonate (PC)/styreneacry-lonitrile copolymer (SAN) blend has poor impact resistance compared to PC/ABS. A rubber phase methacrylate-butadiene-styrene (MBS) of core/shell type was dispersed in PC/SAN blend. The morphology of the unmodified and modified blend was investigated. The influence of the acrylonitrile ratio in the SAN on the microstructure was studied. It clearly shows that core/shell resides at the interface between PC and SAN. It seems that core/shell particles enhance the adhesion between the different phases. Their presence influences the interface mobility; i.e., the coalescence of the dispersed phase observed in pure PC/SAN is considerably reduced when the MBS particles are added. The impact resistance of the samples was correlated with the morphology.

    Notes: The dynamic rheological properties of poly(etherimide)/poly(etheretherketone)/liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) ternary blends were measured in order to correlate these properties with the morphology obtained after extrusion. The viscosity radio, ηd/ηm, where ηd = disperse phase viscosity and ηm = matrix viscosity, had to be redefined. Below 50 wt% LCP, ηd = ηLCP, ηm = ηPEEK+PEI and ηd/ηm 〈 1. Above 50 wt% LCP, ηd = ηPEEK+PEI, ηm = ηLCP and ηd/ηm 〉 1. Fibrillar morphologies were obtained in both cases, except below a concentration of 20 wt% LCP. At low concentrations of LCP the ternary blends had lower viscosities than the component polymers, showing a flow promotion effect of the LCP on the PEI- and PEEK-rich phases.

    Notes: In recent years, the development of high performance Spectra® fibers has received increasing attention in industry. Because of the outstanding capability to absorb energy, these polyethylene fibers are frequently used in damage tolerant composite materials to protect equipment, apparatus, and/or people against blast and debris of explosion or projectiles. Since the fiber is thermally stable, it is possible to design composite structures that are suitable for use in applications where prolonged exposure to flame is anticipated. In this paper, we report the findings obtained in a recent flammability evaluation of a Spectra composite subjected to a torch flame, and to hot metal balls. The Spectra composite structures that will be discussed were found to withstand these exposures without burning and the smoke generation and toxic gas emission were far below the limits set in the standard for current aircraft interior materials.

    Notes: Novolak resins provide the best overall performance for “g” and “i”-line photoresists. There is a continuing need for advanced novolak designs that will provide improved lithographic, thermal, and etch characteristics that may be reproducibly synthesized. A novolak synthesis process was developed using the solution condensation technique. Cresol mixtures with m-cresol and 3,5-xylenol at specific ratios provide reproducible novolaks with controlled molecular weights. In order to achieve high thermal and etch performance, while retaining photospeed and resolution characteristics, three basic approaches were investigated: (1) increase in molecular weight, which produces novolaks with Tg ranging from 120 to 130°C with relatively slow dissolution rates; (2) incorporation of multi-hydroxyphenols such as resorcinol to tailor the dissolution rate, resolution, thermal, etch, and adhesion characteristics; (3) partial esterification of multi-hydroxy novolaks giving a Tg range of 140 to 150°C. Lithographic evaluation of the novolak resins was performed by formulating with a 2,1,4-diazonaphthoquinone (DNQ) sensitizer. Results on resin synthesis, molecular weights, lithographic, thermal, and etch characteristics are discussed.

    Notes: Resin transfer molding (RTM) of advanced fiber architecture materials promises to be a cost effective process for obtaining composite parts with exceptional strength. However there are a larger number of material processing parameters that must be observed, known, and/or controlled during the resin transfer molding process. These include the viscosity both during impregnation and cure. In-situ sensors which can observe these processing properties within the RTM tool during the fabrication process are essential. This paper will discuss recent work on the use of frequency dependent electromagnetic sensing (FDMS) techniques to monitor these properties in the RTM tool. Our objective is to use these sensing techniques to address problems of RTM scaleup for large complex parts and to develop a closed loop, intelligent, sensor controlled RTM fabrication process.

    Notes: A numerical model of the reaction injection molding process was developed to test front shape and flow approximations employed in previous models. The model was two-dimensional and simulated the flow, reaction, and heat transfer in the typically long axial dimension and the typically small thickness dimension of a mold. The filling front shape and the velocity profiles in the filling fluid were determined by numerical solution of the momentum equation with the appropriate stress boundary conditions using the method of Patankar (1980). The predicted temperature and conversion results agreed with calculations assuming that the front was flat perpendicular to the flow and that a parabolic velocity profile existed behind the fountain flow region at the front. Thus, simple assumptions about front shape and velocity in the thin dimension of a reaction injection mold can be employed without significant loss of accuracy in modeling reaction injection molding.

    Notes: The direct oxidation of CH4 to H2 and CO in O2 and in air at high temperatures over alumina foam monoliths coated with high loadings of Pt and Rh has been simulated using a 19-elementary-step model of adsorption, desorption and surface reaction steps with reaction parameters from the literature or from fits to previous experiments. The surface reaction model for Pt is in good agreement with previously reported low-pressure(0.1 to 1 torr) reactor measurements of CH4 oxidation rates at temperatures from 600 to 1,500 K and of OH radical desorption during CH4 oxidation at 1,300 to 1,600 K over polycrystalline Pt foils. The model predictions for both catalysts are also consistent with product selectivities observed over monolithic catalysts in an atmospheric-pressure laboratory-scale reactor, and the differences between Pt and Rh can be explained by comparing individual reaction steps on these surfaces. Because of the good agreement between the model and both low-and atmospheric-pressure reactor simulations, a complete energy diagram for methane oxidation at low coverages is proposed. The model results show that under CH4rich conditions at high temperatures, H2 and CO are primary products of the direct oxidation of methane via a pyrolysis mechanism.
