Description: The Parker Solar Probe mission launched in 2018 with four instrument suites designed for revolutionary studies of the inner heliosphere. Parker’s current perihelion is about 5.3 million miles from the solar surface. Onboard Parker is the Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (IS0IS), which has two sensors that, combined, observe energetic electrons from ~25 keV to 6 MeV and ions from ~20 keV to 〉200 MeV. By traveling so close to the Sun, IS0IS discerns small energetic particle events that are not measurable at 1 AU. IS0IS is studying these energetic particles from a new vantage point in the heliosphere and has already improved our understanding of both particle acceleration and their transport. New results from IS0IS and the other instrument suites will be presented.

Description: 〉Ship-borne magnetic surveys in Lake IJssel (IJsselmeer), the former ’Zuyderzee’, a now closed off lagoon of the North Sea (since 1932) in the Central Netherlands, showed winding linear magnetic structures reminiscent of natural channel features, such as those of small rivers, brooks, and creeks, next to numerous point sources (small metal objects). The Holocene geology of the lake floor involves marine transgression in the Middle Holocene, with naturally freshened stages before and after that; the sediments are topped by renewed marine ingression in the last millennia. This enables reconstruction of magnetic features. A series of vibrocores of up to 6 m long was collected to this end. We studied three cores: VC15 in a positive anomaly, VC17 in a negative anomaly, while core VC26 was sampled in a different area. After core screening with a hand-held susceptometer, discrete samples were subjected to AF demagnetization of the natural remanent magnetization (NRM). Also acquisition curves of the isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM) were measured supplemented with thermomagnetic analysis to determine the magnetic mineralogy. Greigite (Fe3S4) is shown to be the major magnetic mineral. Low susceptibility and IRM core sections are dominated by sandy lithologies and pyrite while portions with notably higher susceptibility and IRM are associated with peat and clay-rich lithologies and greigite. In VC15 greigite-bearing levels do indeed represent levee deposits from a winding channel of immediate post-transgression age, i.e., the end of Middle Holocene. The identified magnetic anomalies may trace submerged prehistoric channel features enabling landscape reconstruction of early Neolithic habitation.〈/p〉

Description: Earth-2 is a collaborative and open-science initiative launched by NVIDIA in Nov 2021, to develop operational digital twins of the Earth and its subsystems. The primary aim of Earth-2 is to improve predictions of extreme weather, projections of climate change, and to accelerate the development of effective mitigation and adaptation strategies - all using advanced modeling and scientifically principled machine learning methods at large scale. An AI centric approach is critical to enable fast and interactive exploration of potential adaptation / mitigation strategies, their consequences, and their trade-offs. Some of the digital twins under development as part of this project include AI surrogates of medium-range weather, global-climate, and seasonal-to-subseasonal forecasting. Other efforts include generative AI downscaling, automatic discovery of physical parameterizations, and generative prediction of precipitation. This talk will discuss the goals, strategies, progress, applications, and future challenges of this effort.

Description: Improving our ability to forecast the weather and climate is of interest to all sectors of the economy and government agencies. However, accurate forecasts for the subseasonal regime are lacking due to the chaotic nature of the weather. We have recently developed a machine learning based adaptive bias correction (ABC) method combining state of the art dynamical forecasts with observations as well as utilizing regression models. We applied this method to probabilistic precipitation and temperature forecasts with a forecasting lead of 3 to 4 weeks over the continental United States from 1999 to 2016. Using the ranked probability skill for comparison, we can show that the skill of the ABC debiased forecasts is higher than in the traditional debiased forecasts for both space and time averaged skill. Another method to further improve the skill is to combine several different dynamical models into a multimodel ensemble e.g., by weighting all model forecasts equally. However, a better alternative to the latter is to weigh model forecasts based on their skill. We recently developed an approach for adaptive ensembling of numerical weather predictions using a machine learning tool called sequential online learning algorithms. As real-time weather outcomes are observed, the algorithm adjusts the weights of each model member according to its past performance. We evaluated the skill of precipitation and temperature forecasts forecasting at 3 to 4 weeks lead time over the United States from 1999 to 2016 and see that our proposed online learning algorithm can outperform uniform ensembles for probabilistic forecasts.

Description: We extended a recently developed index of accumulated severe winter weather for stations in the United States only to the entire Northern Hemisphere. Utilizing this index of severe winter weather, we explore the relationship of Arctic temperatures and geopotential heights with the probability of severe winter weather across the mid-latitudes. This index shows a direct and linear relationship between Arctic temperatures and severe winter weather across the mid-latitudes. We also explore trends and identify those regions where the Arctic warming trend could be contributing to an increase in severe winter weather which is superimposed on the overall global warming trend. Besides focusing on pan-Arctic trends we also identify the relationship between regional Arctic temperatures with more regionalized severe winter weather. We also analyze the relationship between polar vortex variability and the occurrence of severe winter weather in Europe, Asia and North America.
