    Description: China's regular energy statistics does not include the building sector, and data on building energy demand is included in other types of energy consumption in the Energy Balance Sheet (EBS). Therefore data on building energy demand is not collected based on statistics, but rather calculated or estimated by various approaches in China. This study aims at developing and testing China's building energy statistics by applying an adapted EBS. The advantage of the adapted EBS is that statistical data is from the regular statistical system and no additional statistical efforts are needed. The research result shows that the adapted EBS can be included in China regular energy statistical system and can be standardized in a transparent way. Testing of the adapted EBS shows that China's building energy demand has shown an annual increase of 7.6% since 2001, and a lower contribution to the total energy demand as compared to the developed world. There is also a close link to lifestyle and living standard while industrial energy demand is mainly driven by economy and decoupling of building energy demand with increasing of building floor area, this is due to a considerable improvement of building energy efficiency. The adapted EBS creates a method for China conducting statistics of building energy consumption at the sector level in a uniform way and serves as the basis for any sound building energy efficiency policy decisions.

    Description: As a primary driving force, margin tilting is crucial for gravity-driven thin-skinned salt tectonics. We investigated how instant versus progressive margin tilting mechanisms influence salt tectonics using an analogue modeling setup where tilting rate could be controlled. Instant tilting resulted in initially high deformation rates, triggering widely distributed upslope extension and downslope contraction. Later, both the extensional and contractional domains migrated upslope as early extensional structures were successively deactivated, while deformation rates decreased exponentially. In contrast, progressive tilting led to downslope migration of the extensional domain by sequentially formed, long-lived normal faults. Contraction localized on a few, long-lived thrusts before migrating upslope. We attribute the distinct structural evolution of thin-skinned deformation, especially in the extensional domain, in the two tilting scenarios mainly to mechanical coupling between the brittle overburden and underlying viscous material. The coupling effect in turn is largely controlled by the deformation rate. By demonstrating the spatiotemporal variations of structural style and kinematic evolution associated with instant versus progressive tilting, we suggest that such variation is identifiable in nature and therefore can provide a new way to analyze margin tilting histories.

    Description: The tropospheric horizontal gradients with high spatiotemporal resolutions provide important information to describe the azimuthally asymmetric delays and significantly increase the ability of ground-based GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) within the field of meteorological studies, like the nowcasting of severe rainfall events. The recent rapid development of multi-GNSS constellations has potential to provide such high-resolution gradients with a significant degree of accuracy. In this study, we develop a multi-GNSS process for the precise retrieval of high-resolution tropospheric gradients. The tropospheric gradients with different temporal resolutions, retrieved from both single-system and multi-GNSS solutions, are validated using independent numerical weather models (NWM) data and water vapor radiometer (WVR) observations. The benefits of multi-GNSS processing for the retrieval of tropospheric gradients, as well as for the improvement of precise positioning, are demonstrated. The multi-GNSS high-resolution gradients agree well with those derived from the NWM and WVR, especially for the fast-changing peaks, which are mostly associated with synoptic fronts. The multi-GNSS gradients behave in a much more stable manner than the single-system estimates, especially in cases of high temporal resolution, benefiting from the increased number of observed satellites and improved observation geometry. The high-resolution multi-GNSS gradients show higher correlation with the NWM and WVR gradients than the low-resolution gradients. Furthermore, the precision of station positions can also be noticeably improved by multi-GNSS fusion, and enhanced results can be achieved if the high-resolution gradient estimation is performed, instead of the commonly used daily gradient estimation in the multi-GNSS data processing.

    Description: The low-cost single-frequency GNSS receiver is one of the most economical and affordable tools for the onboard real-time navigation of numerous remote sensing small/micro satellites. We concentrate on the algorithm and experiments of onboard real-time orbit determination (RTOD) based on a single-frequency GPS/BDS receiver. Through various experiments of processing the real single-frequency GPS/BDS measurements from the Yaogan-30 (YG30) series and FengYun-3C (FY3C) satellites of China, some critical aspects of the onboard RTOD are investigated, such as the optimal force models setting, the effect of different measurements, and the impact of GPS/BDS fusion. The results demonstrate that a gravity model truncated to 55 × 55 order/degree for YG30 and 45 × 45 for FY3C and compensated with an optimal stochastic modeling of empirical accelerations, which minimize the onboard computational load and only result in a slight loss of orbit accuracy, is sufficient to obtain high-precision real-time orbit results. Under the optimal force models, the real-time orbit accuracy of 0.4–0.7 m for position and 0.4–0.7 mm/s for velocity is achievable with the carrier-phase-based solution, while an inferior real-time orbit accuracy of 0.8–1.6 m for position and 0.9–1.7 mm/s for velocity is achieved with the pseudo-range-based solution. Furthermore, although the GPS/BDS fusion only makes little change to the orbit accuracy, it increases the number of visible GNSS satellites significantly, and thus enhances the geometric distribution of GNSS satellites that help suppress the local orbit errors and improves the reliability and availability of the onboard RTOD, especially in some anomalous arcs where only a few GPS satellites are trackable.

    Description: Since China’s BeiDou satellite navigation system (BDS) began to provide regional navigation service for Asia-Pacific region after 2012, more new generation BDS satellites have been launched to further expand BDS’s coverage to be global. In this contribution, precise positioning models based on BDS and the corresponding mathematical algorithms are presented in detail. Then, an evaluation on BDS’s real-time dynamic positioning and navigation performance is presented in Precise Point Positioning (PPP), Real-time Kinematic (RTK), Inertial Navigation System (INS) tightly aided PPP and RTK modes by processing a set of land-borne vehicle experiment data. Results indicate that BDS positioning Root Mean Square (RMS) in north, east, and vertical components are 2.0, 2.7, and 7.6 cm in RTK mode and 7.8, 14.7, and 24.8 cm in PPP mode, which are close to GPS positioning accuracy. Meanwhile, with the help of INS, about 38.8%, 67.5%, and 66.5% improvements can be obtained by using PPP/INS tight-integration mode. Such enhancements in RTK/INS tight-integration mode are 14.1%, 34.0%, and 41.9%. Moreover, the accuracy of velocimetry and attitude determination can be improved to be better than 1 cm/s and 0.1°, respectively. Besides, the continuity and reliability of BDS in both PPP and RTK modes can also be ameliorated significantly by INS during satellite signal missing periods.

    Description: The rupture processes of the 2015 April 25 Gorkha earthquake and its strongest aftershock occurred on May 12 in Nepal are investigated by joint inversion of seismological and geodetic data. Synthetic test shows that the sedimentary layers in the source region play an important role in the rupture process inversion. Our optimized model of the mainshock shows that the rupture has a unilateral propagation pattern. The dominant mechanism is pure thrust with maximum slip of 5.8 m, the rupture scale extends ~ 60 km along dip and ~ 150 km along strike, and the largest static stress change is ~ 7.6 MPa. The total seismic moment is 7.87 × 1020 N m, equivalent to Mw 7.9. Most seismic moment was released within 80 s and the majority seismic moment was released at the first 40 s. The rupture propagated in main slip asperity with a velocity of ~ 3.0 km/s. The strong aftershock magnitude is about Mw 7.3, and the peak slip is about 5.0 m, close to the peak slip of the mainshock. Moreover, the slips of the mainshock and the aftershocks are in good complementary, suggesting a triggering relationship between them. Considering the strain accumulation, the Gorkha earthquake ruptured only part of the seismic gap alone, thus still poses high earthquake risk, especially in the west side of the mainshock rupture zone.

    Description: The multiple global navigation satellite systems (multi-GNSS) bring great opportunity for the real-time retrieval of high-quality zenith tropospheric delay (ZTD), which is a critical quality for atmospheric science and geodetic applications. In this contribution, a multi-GNSS precise point positioning (PPP) ambiguity resolution (AR) analysis approach is developed for real-time tropospheric delay retrieval. To validate the proposed multi-GNSS ZTD estimates, we collected and processed data from 30 Multi-GNSS Experiment (MGEX) stations; the resulting real-time tropospheric products are evaluated by using standard post-processed troposphere products and European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts analysis (ECMWF) data. An accuracy of 4.5 mm and 7.1 mm relative to the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe (CODE) and U.S. Naval Observatory (USNO) products is achievable for real-time tropospheric delays from multi-GNSS PPP ambiguity resolution after an initialization process of approximately 5 min. Compared to Global Positioning System (GPS) results, the accuracy of retrieved zenith tropospheric delay from multi-GNSS PPP-AR is improved by 16.7% and 31.7% with respect to USNO and CODE final products. The GNSS-derived ZTD time-series exhibits a great agreement with the ECMWF data for a long period of 30 days. The average root mean square (RMS) of the real-time zenith tropospheric delay retrieved from multi-GNSS PPP-AR is 12.5 mm with respect to ECMWF data while the accuracy of GPS-only results is 13.3 mm. Significant improvement is also achieved in terms of the initialization time of the multi-GNSS tropospheric delays, with an improvement of 50.7% compared to GPS-only fixed solutions. All these improvements demonstrate the promising prospects of the multi-GNSS PPP-AR method for time-critical meteorological applications.

    Description: Global navigation satellite system (GNSS) precise point positioning (PPP) requires continuous carrier-phase observations to achieve a solution of high precision. Precisely correcting cycle slips caused by signal interruptions is crucial for recovering the data continuity. Most of the existing approaches usually employ only data of one epoch after the interruption for real-time cycle slip processing. In this study, we propose to introduce and estimate cycle slip parameters together with standard PPP parameters, such as position, ionospheric delay, and ambiguities in the case that possible cycle slips are detected, using a Kalman-filter-based procedure with the undifferenced and uncombined PPP model. The integer search strategy is used to fix cycle slips. To reduce the probability of wrong integer fixing, a strict integer validation threshold is suggested. As a result, it is not easy to fix all cycle slips with only one epoch of data. Our approach can be easily extended to use multi-epoch observations to enhance the cycle slip estimation. Once the cycle slips are correctly determined, continuous PPP can be achieved instantaneously. This new approach is tested and validated with three groups of experiments using GPS and GLONASS stations operated by the International GNSS Service from DOY 1–10, 2017, and a real vehicle kinematic data. Numerous experimental results showed that the proposed method can correctly fix the cycle slips for more than 99.5% of epochs suffering from re-convergence. On average, this method takes observation information from about 1.5–2.5 epochs to fix cycle slips and realize rapid re-convergence. Consequently, positioning performance is significantly improved.
