Notes: The CaS:Sm3+ nanocrystallites are synthesized by the modified sol-gel technique. The grain size of the nanocrystallites is approximately 60 nm, which is determined by transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction and UV-vis absorption spectrum. Compared to the CaS:Sm3+ macrocrystallites, the absorption and emission of the nanocrystallites have a blueshift in their spectra, and the emission spectrum of the host CaS appears in the region of 400–500 nm. It was also found that the efficiencies of both photoluminescence and upconversion in the nanocrystallites are higher than those in the macrocrystallites. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present the study of the giant magnetoresistance effect in ferromagnetically ordered thin film and bulk based on the Hund's rule coupling between the mobile d electron and the core spin of Mn ions. It has been shown that the resistivity is proportional to the spin–spin correlation functions, a maximum resistivity appears near the critical point in absence of magnetic field and an applied field drives the resistivity peak to higher temperature and reduces the peak value, which is in agreement with the experiments. The giant magnetoresistance effect in thin film is attributed to the spin-correlation-dependent scattering and the low-dimensional character. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present studies on both the electronic and magnetic properties of LaCo13 and La(FexAl1−x)13 intermetallic compounds by cluster model calculations within the scheme of density-functional theory. The equilibrium structures of the isolated and embedded clusters, obtained by minimizing the total binding energy, are in good agreement with available experimental data and other theoretical results. The relative stability and formation of LaCo13 and La(FexAl1−x)13 phases have been successfully explained. Interesting changes of magnetic properties in an Al doped Fe13 cluster have been obtained. The possible effect of Al on the magnetic phase diagram of La(FexAl1−x)13 is discussed.

Notes: Twin related domain formation is examined as a strain relaxation mechanism for a heteroepitaxial tetragonal film on a cubic substrate. Elastic relaxations are calculated for a single twin band in which the c axis of the tetragonal domains is either related by a 90° rotation about an axis in the plane of the film or by a 90° rotation about the surface normal. In all cases, the strain energy change is evaluated for both the film and the substrate. A domain pattern map is developed that predicts single domain and multiple domain fields depending on the relative misfit strains and domain wall energy. The concept of a critical thickness, hc, for domain formation is developed. For cases in which the c axis is rotated 90° about an axis in the plane of the film, the critical thickness depends only on the relative coherency strain between the substrate and film and the ratio of the domain wall energy to the stored elastic energy. For the case of a pattern consisting of energetically equivalent domains with the c axis in plane, the equilibrium distance of multiple domains is derived. For such multiple domains, a minimum wall separation distance exists that depends nonlinearly on the film thickness.

Notes: The MEVVA ion source presented in the present paper adopts the arc discharge mechanism with a cathode changeable by a motor for pushing in, and an accel–decel three-grid extraction system. The voltage proof level is higher than 60 kV, the ion source generally runs at a voltage of 40 kV, the average beam current is higher than 5 mA, the beam spot is about 150 mm in diameter, and the nonuniformity of beams is within ±20%. Measurements of the beam radial profile show that there is a platform of about 40 mm in diameter in the central region. Ion beams and their optimal operation conditions for the cathode materials Al, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu, Y, Zr, Mo, Ta, W, C, LaB6, etc., have already been obtained.

Notes: A systematic study on the ground state electronic structure and magnetic properties of Nin (n=2–39 and 55) clusters are performed using the density functional calculation with the local spin-density approximation. The binding energy per atom increases monotonically. The occupation numbers do not change significantly for n〉8, which helps us to understand the experimental observation of the photoelectron spectroscopy. The obtained average magnetic moment per atom is larger than the bulk value, and the evolvement of these moments towards the bulk is in good agreement with the experimental trend. However, the average moments of "core" atoms are comparable to or even larger than that of surface atoms, which indicates that the usual conclusion of surface enhancement on magnetism in transition metal clusters may be improper for these Nin (n=14–39) clusters. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: High cell density cultivation of Haematococcus pluvialis for astaxanthin production was carried out in batch and fed-batch modes in 3.7-L bioreactors with stepwise increased light intensity control mode. A high cell density of 2.65 g L−1 (batch culture) or 2.74 g L−1 (fed-batch culture) was obtained, and total astaxanthin production in the fed-batch culture (64.36 mg L−1) was about 20.5% higher than in the batch culture (53.43 mg L−1). An unstructured kinetic model to describe the microalga culture system including cell growth, astaxanthin formation, as well as sodium acetate consumption was proposed. Good agreement was found between the model predictions and experimental data. The models demonstrated that the optimal light intensity for mixotrophic growth of H. pluvialis in batch or fed-batch cultures in a 3.7-L bioreactor was 90–360 μmol m−2 s−1, and that the stepwise increased light intensity mode could be replaced by a constant light intensity mode.

Notes: This paper investigated high cell density cultivation of Haematococcus pluvialis for astaxanthin production in 3.7-L bioreactors. A biomass concentration of 2.74 g L−1and an astaxanthin yield of 64.4 mg L−1 were obtained. Based on the experimental results, a new and simple dynamic model is proposed, differing from Monod kinetics, to describe cell growth, product formation and substrate consumption. Good agreement was found between the model predictions and experimental data. The model revealed that there was cell growth inhibition on product formation and product feedback compensation for substrate consumption, but no substrate inhibition or product inhibition of cell growth. Stability analysis demonstrated that no multiplicity of steady states was observed; the unique positive steady state was locally asymptotically stable; and the effect of dilution rate on steady states was greater than that of the initial substrate concentration.
