    Description: National and local governments need to step up efforts to effectively implement the post-2020 global biodiversity framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity to halt and reverse worsening biodiversity trends. Drawing on recent advances in interdisciplinary biodiversity science, we propose a framework for improved implementation by national and subnational governments. First, the identification of actions and the promotion of ownership across stakeholders need to recognize the multiple values of biodiversity and account for remote responsibility. Second, cross-sectorial implementation and mainstreaming should adopt scalable and multifunctional ecosystem restoration approaches and target positive futures for nature and people. Third, assessment of progress and adaptive management can be informed by novel biodiversity monitoring and modeling approaches handling the multidimensionality of biodiversity change.

    Description: Eastern Africa and Arabia were major hominin hotspots and critical crossroads for migrating towards Asia during the late Pleistocene. To decipher the role of spatiotemporal environmental change on human occupation and migration patterns, we remeasured the marine core from Meteor Site KL 15 in the Gulf of Aden and reanalyzed its data together with the aridity index from ICDP Site Chew Bahir in eastern Africa and the wet-dry index from ODP Site 967 in the eastern Mediterranean Sea using linear and nonlinear time series analysis. These analyses show major changes in the spatiotemporal paleoclimate dynamics at 400 and 150 ka BP (thousand years before 1950), presumably driven by changes in the amplitude of the orbital eccentricity. From 400 to 150 ka BP, eastern Africa and Arabia show synchronized wet-dry shifts, which changed drastically at 150 ka BP. After 150 ka BP, an overall trend to dry climate states is observable, and the hydroclimate dynamics between eastern Africa and Arabia are negatively correlated. Those spatio-temporal variations and interrelationships of climate potentially influenced the availability of spatial links for human expansion along those vertices. We observe positively correlated network links during the supposed out-of-Africa migration phases of H. sapiens. Furthermore, our data do not suggest hominin occupation phases during specific time intervals of humid or stable climates but provide evidence of the so far underestimated potential role of climate predictability as an important factor of hominin ecological competitiveness.

    Description: The data publication contains all heat-flow data of onshore Germany. The data release contains data generated between 1959 and 2020 and constitutes a substantial update and extension compared to the last compilation provided by the Geothermal Atlas from Hurter & Haenel (2002). The data set comprises new heat-flow determinations published after 2002 as well as data from before 2002, which were not included in the Hurter & Haenel atlas. The resulting updated database contains 836 determinations of heat flow at 595 locations from 42 publications. 85% of the reported heat-flow values are determined in boreholes, 5% in mines, and further 9 % are from onshore lake measurements using marine probe sensing techniques. The reporting and storing of the database is following the structure of the IHFC Global Heat Flow Database (Fuchs et al., 2021). A comprehensive description, including field classifications and ex-amples of associated data, is documented there. The IHFC database concept introduces parent elements (providing site-specific information), child elements (i.e. heat-flow values determined at the site and associated meta-data) and further fields providing additional information for the eval-uation of heat-flow quality. Thus, it provides a detailed collection of data and meta-data infor-mation, exceeding the sparse information on coordinates, name and heat-flow value provided in Hurter & Haenel (2002). In our release of the German heat-flow values, we have added fields about the applied quality scoring, the reasoning for inclusion or exclusion of data due to quality, and a descriptive field of the regional tectonic or geological units. For details of this procedure see Fuchs et al. (2022). The associated data description provides the full list of data sources (publications), while the DOI landing page only displays digital versions of articles if available.

    Description: This data set is part 2 of this series and compiles whole-rock chemical data for late-Variscan low-F biotite and two-mica granites in the German Erzgebirge, in the Saxothuringian Zone of the Variscan Orogen. The group of F-poor biotite granites is represented by the composite massifs of Kirchberg and Niederbobritzsch, the Plohn Granite Suite (PGS), the Aue Granite Suite (AGS), and the subsurface granites of Beiersdorf und Bernsbach. For the group of two-mica granites, compositional data for the multi-stage Bergen massif and the granites from Lauter and Schwarzenberg are reported (Figure 1). Crystal-melt fractionation was the dominant process controlling the evolution of bulk composition in the course of massif/pluton formation. However, metasomatic and hydrothermal processes involving late-stage residual melts and high-T late- to post-magmatic fluids became increasingly more important in highly evolved units and have variably modified the abundances of mobile elements. Interaction with the various metamorphic country rocks and infiltration of meteoric low-T fluids have further disturbed the initial chemical patterns in the endocontact zones and zones influenced by surface weathering. The data set reports whole-rock geochemical analyses for enclaves, granites, aplites, endocontact rocks, and some facial varieties. The data are presented as Excel (xlsx) and machine-readable txt formats. The content of the excel sheet and further information on the granites and regional geology are provided in the data description file.

    Description: The Global Heat Flow Database of the International Heat Flow Commission (IHFC) is currently under fundamental revision. Here, we present a critical assessment of the terrestrial heat-flow-density data for Germany. The collected legacy data from Germany cover entries from 596 heat-flow locations over a time span of more than 60 years, showing differences in documentation and the availability of metadata. To assess the data, we follow a multi-step procedure: first, we screened the original literature, updated the heat flow data and revised them for completeness and reproducibility. Database entries with missing data essential for heat flow determination (like temperature gradient, thermal conductivity) are flagged as not reliable as they cannot be scientifically reproduced nor quality assessed. This strict procedure is necessary for setting up a dataset following scientific criteria and results in a reduction of the original data set by almost 80% to 138 locations. These were assessed in terms of methodological quality and labeled for different overruling effects, like paleoclimate, heat refraction, or fluid movements. The (area-weighted) average terrestrial heat flow for Germany is 78 ± 7 mWm〈sup〉-〈/sup〉² which is by almost 20% higher compared to earlier estimates (ca. 65 mWm〈sup〉-〈/sup〉²). The regional average heat flow across Germany varies by the order of 40 %. However, considering a radius of 10 km around each location, the heat flow remains uncertain for ca. 90% of the German onshore area, which raises the demand for new systematic heat-flow measurements in Germany.

    Description: Storm-time topside ionosphere plasma composition, especially the light ion fraction, is an important parameter which controls magnetosphere–ionosphere coupling, plays a part in the growth of local instabilities, and provides information about the ring current, ion upflow, movement of ionization and other important physical processes and parameters. Ion composition is difficult to estimate on fine scales as empirical models tend to be parametrized by fixed inputs, ignoring the role of memory in plasma, and to preferentially capture large scales, while ground radars have limited coverage. In particular, ionospheric composition measurements at mid-latitude are lacking. Here we show, using the new Swarm SLIDEM effective ion mass measurement, a superposed epoch analysis of storm-time dayside and nightside effective ion mass changes, demonstrating the extent and timescales of motion of the [O+]/[H+] transition height with the main phase of geomagnetic storms, as well as directly observing evidence for the latitude dependence of these dynamics.
