    Description: In the years 2007-2007, 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 the exploitation of bony fishes resources (by 131 beach seines) started on 12 October but finished on 9 April, 9 April and 13 April, respectively. During these periods the total catch of bony fishes were 23537.8, 20045.5 and 18664.8 tonnes, respevtively. During these periods, kutum predominated and represented the highest proportion of total catch at 73.1, 74.0 and 66.9% , followed by golden grey mullet at 18.3, 13.9 and 18.7%, respectively. K values calculated 0.22, 0.15 and 0.14 year-1 and L∞ were 66.0, 62.7 and 70.0 cm for kuttum, golden grey mullet and common carp, respectively. The instantaneous coefficient natural mortality were estimated as 0.386 and 0.35 year-1 for kutum and golden grey mullet, respectively. During three periods, the exploitation rates were 0.789, 0.584 and 0.614 for kutum and 0.71, 0.75 and 0.61 for golden grey mullet, respectively. In the years 2007-2007, 2008-2009 and 2009-2010, the total biomass, from the biomass-based cohort analysis were 56600, 62090 and 61590 tonnes for kutum and and MSY estimated about 24733.7 and 8550.4 tones for kuttum and 11040, 11900 and 14460 tonnes for golden grey mullet, respectively. The ABC (acceptable biological catch) were estimated as 8000 and 2200 tonnes.

    Notes: Summary The antitumor sulfonylureas appear to inhibit both mitochondrial activity in susceptible human colon lines and to inhibit the oxidation of NADH by isolated plasma membrane vesicles from HeLa cells. The results reported here describe the morphological appearance of HeLa cells treated with the antitumor sulfonylurea N-(4-methylphenylsulfonyl)-N′-(4-chlorophenyl)urea (LY181984). The cells remain viable for several days although the rate of increase in cell number is slowed especially at high concentrations of the drug. Cells become smaller with normal nuclei or maintain a normal size but contain multiple or enlarged nuclei. The morphological observations suggest that the drug may somehow interfere with the ability of the cells to enlarge following cytokinesis. Between 72 and 96 h, the cells begin to die. Cell death is accompanied by a condensed and fragmented appearance of the nuclear DNA as revealed by fluorescence microscopy with 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole suggestive of apoptosis. Early transients in loss of pH control (4 min after sulfonylurea addition) and an increase in cytoplasmic calcium (4 h after sulfonylurea addition) were observed but were small and perhaps secondary to the mechanism responsible for the failure of the cells to grow and ensuing cell death.

    Notes: Summary Growth of K-562 cells in culture is inhibited by the antitumor sulfonylureaLY181984 (N-(4-methylphenylsulfonyl)-N′-(4-chlorophenyl)urea) with an ED50 of about 30 μM. LY181984 was shown previously to inhibit NADH oxidation by plasma membranes from HeLa cells and other sources and to influence mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. With K-562 cells, NADH oxidation by plasma membranes was transiently stimulated and then inhibited by LY181984. NADH oxidation by whole cells was transiently stimulated and then inhibited by 0.1 to 100 μM LY181984 as well. Both the stimulations and inhibitions of activity were time-dependent. NADH oxidation by lower phase membranes depleted of plasma membranes by aqueous two-phase partition also was inhibited by micromolar and submicromolar concentrations of LY181984. Inhibition did not correlate with mitochondrial presence but rather with membranes that appeared to be fragments of the Golgi apparatus. The oxidation of NADH by whole cells and of plasma membranes that was inhibited by LY181984 was distinguished from mitochondrial NADH oxidation by resistance to inhibition by cyanide and by proceeding under oxygen-depleted conditions or an argon atmosphere. In contrast to the active antitumor agent LY181984, the inactive but chemically-related analog, LY181985 (N-(4-methylphenyl-sulfonyl)-N′-(4-phenylurea), inhibited neither growth nor NADH oxidation with K-562 cells or cell fractions.

    Description: The experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of beta glucan, the plant extract, Vitabio A, and the plant extract with probiotic Lactobacillus spp. (Vitabio B) on the growth, histology and immune response of Labeo rohita (Rohu), reared for 120 days in a flow through system. Fish with an average body weight of 264±2.65g were stocked in cemented tanks at 10 fish/replicate. Four iso-nitrogenous artificial feeds containing 0.1% of beta glucan, plant extract, plant extract+probiotic and control (without any immunostimulants) were given to fish twice a day at 3% body weight of fish. A significant (p〈0.05) difference in weight gain was observed between the control and plant extract fed group while it was non-significant (p〉0.05) for the other treatments. The total serum proteins and cell counts (CBC) showed non-significant (p〉0.05) difference among all the treatments except for RBC and Hb which were significantly higher in T1 (control) and T2 (plant extract + bacteria Lactobacillus spp.) compared to T3 (beta glucan) and T4 (plant extract). The analysis of fish body composition revealed that plant stimulant treatment had significantly higher crude protein and ash contents compared with the other treatment groups and lower fat content compared with the control (T1). In conclusion, the plant extracts and beta glucan can be used without any adverse effects on growth, total serum proteins, hematology and fish body composition.

    Description: Using phytobiotics as fish feed additives has interestingly increased during the recent decade. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effect of individual and combined levels of thyme and vitamin E in common carp. Juveniles were separately fed four distinct diets including a control diet (commercial diet without any additive), a diet supplemented with 1% ground Shirazi thyme, diet supplemented with 100 mg/kg vitamin E and a mixture of Shirazi thyme and vitamin E (TE) with mentioned concentrations for 45 days. Sampling was done on days 15, 30 and 45 after the feeding trial duration and some growth and plasma biochemical parameters were evaluated. The individual thyme supplementation significantly increased weight gain (%), feed conversion efficiency and decreased feed conversion ratio (p〈0.05). Plasma enzymes (AST, ALT, ALP and LDH) were not affected in all experimental groups. Compared with the control, triglyceride and glucose were significantly elevated in TE complex at all sampling times. Plasma proteins (total protein, albumin and globulin), cholesterol and creatinine were not altered in all treatments. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with individual 1% Shirazi thyme had no harmful effects on plasma biochemical parameters and increased growth performance of the fish. Moreover, positive effects of thyme on fish growth were more than with vitamin E. Supplementation with a mixture of vitamin E and thyme also displayed no superiority than the individual use of Shirazi thyme in the diet.

    Description: In the mesotrophic-eutrophic Saidenbach Reservoir in Saxony, the nanoplankton and cyanobacteria have increased at the expense of diatom dominance, due to a doubling of the external phosphorus load in the last 15 years. However, the phosphorus sedimentation flux is still very high (up to 80% of the input), corresponding to more than 2 g m2 d-1 in terms of dry weight. There is a strong correlation between the abundance of diatoms in the euphotic zone and their sedimentation flux (with a delay of about 2 weeks). Only about 25% of the deposited material could be clearly attributed to plankton biomass; the remainder resulted from flocculation and precipitation processes or directly from the inflow of clay minerals. The ash content of the deposited material was high (73%). Thus the sedimentation flux can be considered to operate as an internal water-treatment/oligotrophication process within the lake. The neighbouring Neunzehnhain Reservoir still has a very clear water with a transparency up to 18 m depth. Though the sediment was not much lower than Saidenbach sediment in total phosphorus and total numbers of bacteria, sulphide was always absent and the ratio of Fe 2+ to Fe 3+ was very low in the upper (0- 5 cm) layer. Thus the external and internal phosphorus loads do not attain the critical level necessary to induce a ”phosphorus - phytoplankton” feedback loop.

    Description: Global fishmeal production from wild-catch sources cannot continue to increase indefinitely; suitable alternatives have to be found for sustainable aquaculture. Plant-based aquafeed seems to be the ideal alternative to this, but has its own limitations. Plant ingredients are rich in phytic acid, which reduces the bioavailability of nutrients like minerals and protein to the fish, thereby causing aquaculture pollution. Dietary phytase treatment reduces the aquaculture pollution by improving the bioavailability of nutrients, and reduces the feed cost as evident from poultry and piggery. Phytase activity is highly dependent upon the pH of the gut. Unlike mammals, fish are either gastric or agastric, and hence, the action of dietary phytase varies from species to species. In this article, the authors attempt to summarise various effects of phytase on nutrient utilization, growth of fish and aquatic pollution.

    Description: Shepherd's "weekly parametric" method for estimating the parameter L sub( infinity ) and K of the von Bertalanffy growth function from length-frequency data often fails to converge, and usually overestimates K. It is shown that this is due to overcounting of the frequencies associated with large, slow growing fish, and that both of these problems can be completely overcome by a simple change in the way the scoring function is formulated.

    Description: Caspian kutum (Rutilus frisii kutum) is one of the most important commercial bony fishes in Iranian coastal waters of the Caspian Sea that constitute more than 50% of the total annual catch of the bony fishes. In the fishing season of 2003-2004, 5 mobile working groups gathered biometry data in the regions Anzali, Kiashar, Noshahr, Babolsar and Torkmen. Catch statistics of bony fishes was gained from fishing and landing harbors. Total catch of the commercial bony fishes was estimated at 15.5 thousand tons from which the kutum amounted to 8477 tons, 45.5% of the total. Also, catch of the bony fishes of beach seine cooperatives was estimated at 10667 tons where the Caspian kutum comprised 5180 tons (48.65%). The catch per unit effort (CPUE) of the Caspian kutum amounted to 93.3 kg/set with the highest value recorded in Noshahr and the lowest amount observed in Anzali and Kiashahr regions. The mean fork length of the species was 36.7 plus or minus 6.1 cm showing a range of 21 to 69 cm. The mean age was measured as 3.82±1.37 years with the range of 1 to 8 years. The age groups 3, 4 and 5 years old comprised 87% of the total catch age composition. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters such as L infinity, k and t_0) were determined as 70.1 cm, 0.138/year and -1.557 years, respectively. Total mortality, natural mortality and fishing mortality rates of the species were estimated at 1.1/year, 0.28/year and 0.83/year, respectively (considering a surface water temperature of 14°C). The biomass of the fish was estimated at 25 thousand tons.
