    Notes: Improved spectroscopic measurements have been made on the NO(a 4Πi–X 2Πr) 11–0 band, and new measurements on the 14–0 band, bringing the explored region of the a 4Π state to within 0.3 eV of the NO dissociation limit. Doubling and mixing of dye laser radiation is used to access the 200–210 nm region with an ultraviolet linewidth of 0.15 cm−1. The a 4Π molecules collisionally convert their energy to the B 2Π state, from which radiation is detected. Almost 300 lines have been observed in each of the two bands, and accurate spectroscopic constants are presented. New information is provided on the relative positioning of perturbed levels in the a 4Π and B 2Π states. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A compact electron cyclotron resonance plasma source has been built and is being investigated in view of ion and x-ray production. A method recently developed to deduce the energetic electron temperature parameter from the bremsstrahlung spectra emitted by the plasma is adapted to the present plasma case and shows that this temperature parameter can reach a dozen keV. We show that the high-energy electrons are localized on a ring in the mirror midplane by obtaining the image of the x-ray emitters on the chamber walls with a pinhole camera. It indeed appears that the emitters are two rings, due to the hot electrons leaking towards the magnets from the midplane ring where they are located inside the plasma. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Charge-based deep level transient spectroscopy has been used to study the defect states that exist within poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV), a semiconducting polymer with a band gap of about 2.4 eV. The technique allows the determination of activation energies, capture cross sections, and trap concentrations. In some circumstances, it is also possible to distinguish between minority and majority carrier traps. The structures investigated here consisted of indium–tin–oxide (ITO)/PPV/MgAg light emitting diode (LED) devices. Two types of trapping centers were found. The first type has activation energies in the range 0.49–0.53 eV and capture cross sections on the order of 10−16–10−18 cm2. It shows a Poole–Frenkel, field assisted–emission process. This level has been identified as a bulk acceptor-like majority carrier (i.e., hole) trap. The second type has activation energies in the range 0.40–0.42 eV and capture cross sections on the order of 10−19 cm2. This level has been identified as a minority carrier (i.e., electron) trap. This second trap type is therefore expected to limit minority carrier injection into the PPV layer within the LED, and hence reduce electroluminescence under forward bias conditions. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A method for the detection of dust particles occurring in silane–argon gas mixture plasmas is presented. It is based on the spectral analysis of the radio-frequency current. The amplitudes of the fundamental (13.56 MHz) and second harmonics (40.68 MHz) are very sensitive to the presence of the earlier nanoparticles when their size is in the range of 2–3 nm even if their influence on the capacitive character of the impedance is negligible. This method is nonperturbative, with a temporal resolution in the microsecond range, very easy to implement, and can thus be used for industrial reactors. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: SUMMARY. 1, Microhabitats chosen by young grayling (Thymallus thymallus L.) were investigated by electrofishing. The first feeding habitat was marginal areas where water velocity did not exceed 15 cms−1. Fry fed on drift in the first 10 cm of the water column below the surface. This location was very stable during the first weeks of growth (mid-April to mid-May). When they were 3–3.5 cm long, fry began using benthic areas and gradually moved away from the banks towards the channel.2. A downstream migration was noted from the beginning of emergence (mid-April) to the end of May. This mainly nocturnal movement involved all fish sizes and caused a complete removal of young-of-the-year by June from the spawning tributary.
