    Notes: In the western coal-mining area of Ruhrkohle AG, reflection seismic prospecting for the Carboniferous coal measures is severely impaired by structures with halokinetic features. These structures make the interface between Mesozoic and Paleozoic layers, i.e., the top of Zechstein in general, very rugged. Unfortunately the velocity contrast at this interface is very high in that area, the ratio of velocities being 1.5 to 2.0. Therefore, migration and stacking become a problem.Three types of migration are presented:〈list xml:id="l1" style="custom"〉1(f, x)-time-migration with vertical time-to-depth conversion as a second step.2Kirchhoff migration down to a level determined approximately by the highest points of the top of Paleozoics, i.e., 0.35 s, and Kirchhoff-downward continuation for all times exceeding 0.35 s. Intermediate static corrections for these latter times with subsequent (f, k)-time-migration and final vertical time-to-depth conversion.3Direct depth migration in the (f, x)-domain using three interval velocities.In all cases an intermediate picking of the velocity interfaces is necessary. In case 2 this occurs at an earlier stage of the process than in case 1, and in case 3 at a still earlier stage.The results of the second and third migration procedures are superior to those of the first. Possibilities for misinterpretation of faults are reduced considerably when the second or third migration procedure is applied.

    Notes: The normal moveout velocity of a reflecting bed is a function of the dips and curvatures of all overlying velocity interfaces. Now let the (N– 1)th velocity interface be a non- (or badly) reflecting bed, whereas the other interfaces, including the base of the Nth layer, reflect satisfactorily, and let the velocities UN– 1 and UN of the (N– 1)th and Nth layer, respectively, be known. Then the normal moveout velocity for the base of the Nth layer, if known in one direction at a certain part of the surface of the earth, provides a second order differential equation in the horizontal coordinates x and y for the depth ZN – 1(x, y) of the unknown interface.The mathematics becomes rather simple in the case of two-dimensional geological structures. For this case and N= 2 the differential equation mentioned can be solved by stepwise integration or by iteration. One of the many possible applications of the new concept is the determination of the structure of the base of an overthrusting sheet.

    Notes: It is shown that the current status of the least-squares profile-refinement method, for the determination of crystal structures from X-ray and neutron powder diagrams, allows the simultaneous determination of crystallite-size and lattice-strain parameters. As profile-shape functions the Voigt, pseudo-Voigt and Pearson VII functions are considered. Formulae are obtained enabling structure refinement and size-strain analysis in the same computer run.

    Notes: In deconvolution procedures of X-ray diffraction line profiles, a non-ideal standard specimen often has to be used to measure the broadening due to the instrumental aberrations and the X-ray spectrum used. This leads to a non-ideal standard line profile at an incorrect sin 0 range with an incorrect broadening. Large errors in the structural parameters to be determined may result. These errors can be minimized by choosing a proper origin for the evaluation of the Fourier series of the line profiles measured. Rules are presented for the necessary shifts of the origin of a non-ideal standard line profile compared to the origin of the line profile to be analyzed. If these shifts of origin are carried out, errors are still present from the difference in broadening between ideal and non-ideal standard specimens. Simple correction factors are presented to eliminate also these errors. The treatment is given for non-ideal standard specimens with (i) an incorrect spacing, (ii) an incorrect specimen transparency and (iii) remaining structural defects.

    Notes: The use of the Voigt function for the analysis of the integral breadths of broadened X-ray diffraction line profiles forms the basis of a rapid and powerful single-line method of crystallite-size and strain determination which is easy to apply. To avoid graphical methods or interpolation from tables, empirical formulae of high accuracy are used and an estimation of errors is presented, including the influence of line-profile asymmetry. The method is applied to four practical cases of size-strain broadening: (i) cold-worked nickel, (ii) a nitrided steel, (iii) an electrodeposited nickel layer and (iv) a liquid-quenched AlSi alloy.

    Notes: A method for the interpretation of Warren–Averbach mean-squared strain curves is presented. If a polynomial is fitted to such a mean-squared strain curve, then the coefficients of this polynomial can be expressed simply in the mean-squared local strain in the direction perpendicular to the diffracting planes and the mean-squared derivatives of this strain. The method is applied to a series of X-ray diffraction line broadening measurements of isochronally recovery-annealed aluminium. The changes in the average squared derivatives observed after different anneals are explained as changes in the dislocation arrangements in the specimen. The parameters obtained by the method are found to be sensitive to small changes in the strain fields.

    Notes: Three-periodic nets are connected graphs which permit embeddings having a threefold periodicity. To many crystal structures such nets can be meaningfully assigned and used to express the topology of the structures. It is shown that such a net can be fully characterized by a finite graph in which the edges are labelled in a suitable way. The reversal of the process of assigning a labelled finite graph to a given net can be used to generate nets of real and hypothetical crystal structures in a systematic fashion.
