    Notes: It is shown that when the initial condition and the forcing term of the periodic Navier–Stokes or magnetohydrodynamics equations have Fourier coefficients which vanish outside a certain semigroup of frequencies, the same happens to the solutions for all time. Subgroups of frequencies correspond to solutions possessing certain symmetries. By taking as a semigroup the frequencies whose Fourier components are non-negative integers, we get a class of solutions for which the higher modes do not influence the evolution of the lower ones; therefore, the phenomenon of inverse cascading cannot occur for them. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The mobilization region of plasmid CloDF13 was localized to a 3.6 kb DNA segment that was analysed by transposon mutagenesis and DNA sequencing. Analysis of the DNA sequence allowed us to identify two mobilization genes and the CloDF13 origin of conjugative transfer (oriT), which was localized to a 661 bp segment at one end of the mobilization (Mob) region. Thus, the overall organization was oriT–mobB–mobC. Plasmid CloDF13 DNA was isolated mainly as a relaxed form that contained a unique strand and site-specific cleavage site (nic). The position of nic was mapped to the sequence 5′-GGGTG/GTCGGG-3′ by primer extension and sequencing reactions. Analysis of Mob− insertion mutants showed that mobC was essential for CloDF13 relaxation in vivo. The sequence of mobC predicts a protein (MobC) of 243 amino acids without significant similarity to previously reported relaxases. In addition to MobC, the product of mobB was also required for CloDF13 mobilization and for oriT relaxation in vivo. mobB codes for a protein (MobB) of 653 amino acids with three predicted transmembrane segments at the N-terminus and the NTP-binding motifs characteristic of the TraG family of conjugative coupling proteins. Membership of the TraG family was confirmed by the fact that CloDF13 mobilization by plasmid R388 was independent of TrwB and only required PILW. However, contrary to the activities found for other coupling proteins, MobB was required for efficient oriT cleavage in vivo, suggesting an additional role for this particular protein during oriT processing for mobilization. Additionally, the cleavage site produced by the joint activities of MobB and MobC was shown to contain unblocked ends, suggesting that no stable covalent intermediates between relaxase and DNA were formed during the nic cleavage reaction. This is the first report of a conjugative transfer system in which niccleavage results in a free nicked-DNA intermediate.

    Notes:   In this paper, we propose that the ownership structure in the cooperative form acts as an environmental buffer. It is a mechanism to obtain stronger linkages with suppliers by internalizing them, and in this way, obtaining fundamental resources. Using this strategy, the cooperative form can isolate itself from adverse environments and from competition from other organizational forms. Although cooperatives have higher survival probability in any economic context, in rival ideological environments they have less support than other organizational forms. To test these ideas, we have chosen data from the Spanish olive oil milling industry for 1944–98. During this period, Spain changed from a dictatorial to a democratic regime and from a self-subsistence economy in the post civil-war period to a broad liberal international economy. The results show that, whereas other organizational forms are affected by economic and ideological influences, the cooperative form isolates itself by changing the competition level.

    Notes: We report a computer simulation study of diffusion influenced reactions in a disorder medium constituting by immobile spherical obstacles when the concentration of reagents is smaller than the concentration of obstacles. We found that the compartmentalization of the embedding medium leads to a strong decrease of the rate of the first collision between reagents and a strong increase of the rate of recollision after a no-reactive encounter. The behavior of the full rate of reaction depends on the probability that a collision leads to reaction (value of the activation energy) and on the relationship between the decrease of the rate of collision and the increase of the rate of recollision. Thus, totally diffusion controlled reactions are always unfavored in these mediums, while partially diffusion controlled reactions with very high activation energy are more favored in mediums with a bigger degree of compartmentalization. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Brillouin spectra of liquid toluene have been measured between 288 and 358 K using a dynamic light scattering technique. The polarized spectra have been modeled according to Mountain's theory. The most relevant quantity of the theory, namely the relaxation time, has been used to check the validity of several molecular models proposed to interpret vibrational–translational energy exchanges observed in nonassociated liquids. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The H2 elimination from 2,5-dihydrofuran (DHF) was investigated by classical trajectories propagated with the energy and forces taken directly from PM3 semiempirical calculations. The dehydrogenation of DHF was first studied by MP2, B3LYP, and CBS-QB3 calculations and the results were found to be in good agreement with experiment. The CBS-QB3 outcomes were subsequently employed to obtained specific reaction parameters for the PM3 Hamiltonian. Product energy distributions were computed for several ensembles of trajectories initiated at the transition state. Three ensembles based on the quasiclassical barrier sampling (QCBS) technique were used to investigate the problem of zero-point energy (ZPE) leakage in the classical trajectories during the formation of the H2 product molecule. The calculations predict that both the translational energy and vibrational energy distributions may be substantially influenced by nonrandom initial excitations. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The unimolecular dissociation of the propionyl radical to form CO and CH2CH3 was investigated by classical trajectory calculations. Various types of initial sampling conditions were employed: Microcanonical for energies ranging from 27.8 to 72.8 kcal/mol above the zero-point energy (ZPE), and selective excitations at 67.8 kcal/mol. A quasiclassical barrier sampling technique, which circumvents the problem of ZPE leakage, was also used for the calculation of product energy distributions. For energies above 43 kcal/mol, the computations showed that the intramolecular vibrational relaxation is not rapid as compared with the rate of reaction. On the other hand, it is found that vibrational modes associated to the CCO moiety are significantly coupled to the reaction coordinate, in agreement with the suggestion reported by Zewail and co-workers [J. Phys. Chem. 100, 9202 (1996)]. However, the calculations cannot predict the significant decrease of the dissociation rate observed upon deuterium substitution on the α-carbon. Product energy distributions and CO vibrational populations computed for the different excitation schemes are compared with those determined experimentally. For many ensembles, the fraction of the available internal energy resulting in CO vibration agrees with that estimated experimentally. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The Polylepis tarapacana forests found in Bolivia are unique with respect to their altitudinal distribution (4200–5200 m). Given the extreme environmental conditions that characterize these altitudes, this species has to rely on distinct mechanisms to survive stressful temperatures. The purpose of this study was to determine low-temperature resistance mechanisms in P. tarapacana. Tissue was sampled for carbohydrate and proline contents and micro-climatic measurements were made at two altitudes, 4300 and 4850 m, during both the dry cold and wet warm seasons. Supercooling capacity (−3 to −6 °C for the cold dry and −7 to −9 °C for the wet warm season) and injury temperatures (−18 to −23 °C for both seasons), determined in the laboratory, indicate that P. tarapacana is a frost-tolerant species. On the other hand, an increase in supercooling capacity, as the result of significant increase in total soluble sugar and proline contents, occurs during the wet warm season as a consequence of higher metabolic activity. Hence, P. tarapacana, a frost-tolerant species during the colder unfavourable season, is able to avoid freezing during the more favourable season when minimum night-time temperatures are not as extreme.

    Notes: : Generally recognized as safe (GRAS) antimicrobial ingredients were applied to the surface of frankfurters with or without lactate to control the growth of Listeria monocytogenes and ensure the safety of ready-to-eat meat products. The sensory and physicochemical properties of the frankfurters were evaluated. Two frankfurter formulations with no potassium lactate (KL) or 3.3% KL were prepared, and each batch was treated for 30 s with 1 of 4 dips: (1) control (saline solution), (2) acidified calcium sulfate with propionic acid (ACSP), (3) 3.3% KL, or (4) 3.4% lactic acid. Samples then were vacuum-packaged, stored at 4.5°C for 12 wk, and evaluated at 2-wk intervals. The addition of KL slightly decreased aw and percent moisture in franks. Vacuum-package purge was slightly higher in samples treated with ACSP. Descriptive attribute sensory results indicated minimal effects on the sensory properties of the frankfurters containing KL and dipped in antimicrobial solutions.
