Notes: Purpose - Commercial dental porcelain powder was deposited via slurry extrusion and laser densified to fabricate dental restorations in a multi-material laser densification (MMLD) process. Design/methodology/approach - A dental porcelain slurry was made from ball milled dental porcelain powders and extruded using the MMLD system. Extruded lines and rings were laser densified under different conditions in order to study how to build fully dense porcelain layers without warping and cracking during the MMLD process. Findings - The geometric cross section of laser densified porcelain lines were dependent on laser processing parameters. Laser densified single ring showed no warping, and multiple layer body after laser densification showed cracks in the rings. The interface microstructure suggested good bonding between multiple layers. The mechanism to achieve single porcelain ring without warping and cracking is discussed. Alternate ways to build physical tooth layer by layer are proposed. Originality/value - In the MMLD process, dental porcelain slurry was extruded from a human tooth computer file and laser densified to manufacture dental restorations based on solid freeform fabrication (SFF) principles. The understanding developed will pave the way for fabricating a physical dental restoration unit in the near future.

Notes: Abstract A new experiment is described to advance the mechanistic description of fast thermal decomposition chemistry related to preignition and ignition. The technique is illustrated with data for ethylenediammonium dinitrate which displays separable thermochemical events in the condensed phase that correlate with the nature of the products evolved to the gas phase.

Notes: Abstract Pioneer 11 and 10 observations of the wave structure seen in a corotating interaction region at 2.5 AU on day 284 of 1973 and 8 days later at 5 AU reveal large-amplitude Alfvénic structures with many detailed correlations seen between their features at the two radial distances. Hodogram analysis suggests the dominance of near plane polarized, transverse Alfvénic mode fluctuations with periods between 2 min and one hour or more. Some wave evolution close to the Corotating Interaction Region (CIR) shock is noticed, but waves towards the centre of the compression seem to propagate with little damping between the spacecraft observation positions.

Notes: Abstract Swarming locusts show three physical criteria, i.e. the phase changes of melanisation of the nymphal stages or hoppers, of the proportions of certain body parts (morphometric ratios), and increased genetic recombination (meiotic chiasma frequencies) in the adult. The control of these changes, initiated by aggregation into swarms, i.e. gregarisation, seems to be vested in a pheromone which is produced by all hoppers in both the solitaria and gregaria phases, also by hoppers of the albino strain. Such a pheromone can be extracted from the locust room air and from the locust, these extracts showing high activity in bioassays, primarily in increased chiasma frequencies but also in hopper colour. The extract in risella oil is more efficient than that in petroleum ether and can be distilled to yield an active distillate. The pheromone is secreted in the faeces of hoppers but not of adults. There is evidence in faeces bioassays that all three physical criteria are affected; the pheromone may be called locustone. It is manufactured or secreted in a specific section of the alimentary canal, i.e. the crop. Reception is not through the antennae but through the stigmata. Preliminary chemical analysis of a risella oil air extract distilled into various other solvents showed the presence of a relatively simple saturated aliphatic chain with a carbonyl function, perhaps a ketone or an ester.

Notes: Summary We have used a full length cDNA clone to determine the chromosomal location ofthegene encoding human ornithine aminotransferase (OAT), a mitochondrial matrix enzyme. Southern blot analysis of ScaI-digested DNA from 34 human-mouse somatic cell hybrids revealed 11 human fragments. Three fragments mapped to chromosome 10q23-10qter, confirming the previous provisional assignment of the functional gene to this autosome by analysis of OAT expression in somatic cell hybrids (O'Donnell et al. 1985). The remaining eight fragments were assigned to the X chromosome, and regionally assigned to Xp21-Xp11 by use of an X-chromosome mapping panel. These X chromosome sequences could represent pseudogenes, or related members of a multigene family. Two of the X chromosome fragments are alternate alleles of a restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) making this OAT-related locus an excellent genetic marker. The RFLP may now be used to determine any possible relationship between this locus and several X-linked eye defects.
