Notes: Structure property relationship of four different diisocyanates is studied in detail. The isocyanates selected are TDI, MDI Crude, HDI, and IPDI. Physical properties such as mechanical, dynamic mechanical, electrical, and thermal are studied. Dynamic mechanical analyses are based on the compound resonance principle. Among all, IPDI-based polymer showed mediocre trend and TDI-based polymer showed best properties.

Notes: Rheological data have been collected both in shear and non-isothermal elongational flow on three different types of blends, made from one low density polyethylene sample and three linear low density polyethylene samples. In addition to the flow curves, data are presented on the extrudate-swell phenomenon, on the instability arising in capillary flow and on the tensile behavior in the molten state.

Notes: There has been considerable controversy over whether one can extract the primary normal stress difference (N1) for polymer melts from hole pressure (PH) and exit pressure (Pex) data. In this paper values of PH and Pex are obtained for three polymer melts in the same slit-die apparatus under the same operating conditions. It is found that there is a good correlation between values of N1 obtained by means of a cone-and-plate rheometer and those obtained by means of PH data and the Higashitani-Pritchard theory. On the other hand, values of N1 obtained by means of Pex data for polystyrene were two to five times higher than those obtained by means of the cone-and-plate device. For the lower molecular weight low density polyethylene (LDPE) sample, values of Pex were found to be both positive and negative. For the higher molecular weight LDPE sample, values of Pex were found not to increase monotonically with with σw. Hence, it was difficult to obtain unequivocal values of N1 for LDPE.

Notes: The residence time distribution of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) polymers in a counterrotating twin screw commercial extruder was determined and analyzed. The experimental technique involved the use of manganese dioxide as a tracer after being neutron activated and was injected into the extruder during normal operation without interrupting the poly(vinyl chloride) compound production. The experimental results enabled us to better understand the flow and mixing conditions in the extruder.

Notes: The extent of molecular demixing of poly[cross-(ethyl acrylate)]-inter-poly[cross-(methyl methacrylate)] interpenetrating polymer networks (PEA/PMMA IPNs), of mid-range composition was investigated by decrosslinking and/or annealing using dynamic mechanical spectroscopy. A single broad transition characteristic of extensive but incomplete molecular mixing was observed for the PEA/PMMA IPN. The presence of crosslinking in both phases of an IPN enhances the mutual miscibility of the polymers. Through the use of a labile crosslinker, acrylic acid anhydride (AAA), polymer networks may be decross-linked, allowing the chains to separate and form two distinct phases. Annealing further sharpens the transitions, and phase separation becomes most pronounced when decrosslinking is followed by annealing.

Notes: All high molecular weight polysilane derivatives are characterized by a very strong electronic absorption in the-UV spectral region. The position of this absorption and the molar extinction coefficients are functions of both the nature of the substituent and the molecular weight. In this regard, both the λmax and the ∊si-si increase rapidly at first with increased catenation and approach limiting values al around 100 to 150 monomer units. Irradiation of these polysilane derivatives leads predominantly to chain scission and molecular weight reduction although the scission ing/crosslinking ratio is dependent on the nature of the substituents. The mechanism of the photodegradation involves both the extrusion of substituted silylene fragments and the formation of silyl radicals. Lithographically, we have exercised the polysilanes in two configurations: (1) O2-RlE etch resistant barriers in multilayer structures and, (2) thin imaginable layers for O2-RIE image transfer. In each case, the stability of the silicon polymers to O2-RIE conditions is due to the formation of a thin skin of oxide. In the case of the bilayer configurations, the images have been developed both by conventional wet development and by excimer laser ablation at either 308 or 248 nm prior to image transfer. Using either mode, we have been able to generate and transfer submicron images without difficulty. Finally, the strong optical absorption of the polysilanes, coupled with the observed bleaching upon irradiation, suggests potential as contrast enhancing materials. The contrast enhancement gained by the use of a polysilane layer has been modeled by computer simulation and demonstrated experimentally.

Notes: Ternary blends comprising polycarbonate, (PC), poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN), and a polyester, either poly(1,4-butylene adipate) (PBA), poly(1,4-cyclohexanedimethylene succinate) (PCDS), or poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), were found to be miscible based on the presence of a single glass transition temperature at many compositions. For all systems, the addition of just 1% by weight polyester resulted in a miscible blend for SAN/PC ratios of 1/1 and 3/1, and a region of immiscibility was generally observed for PC-rich compositions with low polyester content. The melting point depression of PCL in the ternary and in binary mixtures was studied to obtain interaction parameters for the PCL/PC, PCL/SAN, and SAN/PC binaries. These parameters were used to calculate the locus of compositions which mark the boundary between single- and multiple-phase behavior. Agreement between the calculated and experimental boundary was only fair. PCDS was found to be the most efficient of the three polyesters studied for solubilizing PC and SAN. SAN copolymer containing 25% acrylonitrile (AN), was found to be more easily solubilized in PC by PCDS than SAN containing 13% AN.

Notes: Low-density polyethylene film was subjected to direct fluorination on one surface by exposure to a dilute fluorine gas stream for various periods of time. Various analyses indicate partial fluorination of a thin surface layer. The permeability coefficients for He, CO2, and CH4 were measured at 35°C. The permeability of He was not changed by fluorination; whereas, values for CO2 and CH4 were decreased by as much as two orders of magnitude. The selectivity of transport for gas pairs of different molecular size was greatly improved, suggesting applications of this technique for membrane separation processes.

Notes: Recent data from large-scale turbulent natural gas/air diffusion flames (135-210 MW) were used to evaluate analysis of flame structure and radiation properties. The conserved-scalar formalism, in conjunction with the laminar flamelet concept, was used to predict radiative heat fluxes. The narrow-band model considered the nonluminous gas bands of water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane and carbon monoxide in the 1000-6000mm wavelength range. Structure predictions were encouraging, with discrepancies for mean temperatures (ca200 K in the hottest portions of the flames) comparable to experimental uncertainties, due to thermocouple errors, flame disturbances from ambient winds and lifting and external expansion effects near the injector. Radiative heat flux predictions were also reasonably good, e.g. predictions based on mean scalar properties were generally 15% lower than the measurements. The findings also suggest that continuum radiation from soot is negligible for these flames.
