Notizen: Transport phenomena are studied in Advanced Tokamak (AT) regimes in the DIII-D tokamak [Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research, 1986 (International Atomics Energy Agency, Vienna, 1987), Vol. I, p. 159], with the goal of developing understanding and control during each of three phases: Formation of the internal transport barrier (ITB) with counter neutral beam injection taking place when the heating power exceeds a threshold value of about 9 MW, contrasting to co-NBI injection, where Pthreshold〈2.5 MW. Expansion of the ITB is enhanced compared to similar co-injected discharges. Both differences are believed to arise from modification of the E×B shear dynamics when the sign of the rotation contribution is reversed. Sustainment of an AT regime with βNH89=9 for 16 confinement times has been accomplished in a discharge combining an ELMing H-mode (edge localized, high confinement mode) edge and an ITB, and exhibiting ion thermal transport down to 2–3 times neoclassical. The microinstabilities usually associated with ion thermal transport are predicted stable, implying that another mechanism limits performance. High frequency magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) activity is identified as the probable cause. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The amplitude and frequency of modes driven in the edge region of tokamak high mode (H-mode) discharges [type I edge-localized modes (ELMs)] are shown to depend on the discharge shape. The measured pressure gradient threshold for instability and its scaling with discharge shape are compared with predictions from ideal magnetohydrodynamic theory for low toroidal mode number (n) instabilities driven by pressure gradient and current density and good agreement is found. Reductions in mode amplitude are observed in discharge shapes with either high squareness or low triangularity where the stability threshold in the edge pressure gradient is predicted to be reduced and the most unstable mode is expected to have higher values of n. The importance of access to the ballooning mode second stability regime is demonstrated through the changes in the ELM character that occur when second regime access is not available. An edge stability model is presented that predicts that there is a threshold value of n for second regime access and that the most unstable mode has n near this threshold. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: In this article we investigate the partial closure of diagnostic holes in Z-pinch driven hohlraums. These hohlraums differ from current laser-driven hohlraums in a number of ways such as their larger size, greater x-ray drive energy, and lower temperature. Although the diameter of the diagnostic holes on these Z-pinch driven hohlraums can be much greater than their laser-driven counterparts, 4 mm in diameter or larger, radiation impinges on the wall material surrounding the hole for the duration of the Z pinch, nearly 100 ns. This incident radiation causes plasma to ablate from the hohlraum walls surrounding the diagnostic hole and partially obscure this diagnostic hole. This partial obscuration reduces the effective area over which diagnostics view the hohlraum's radiation. This reduction in area can lead to an underestimation of the wall temperature when nonimaging diagnostics such as x-ray diodes and bolometers are used to determine power and later to infer a wall temperature. In this article we describe the techniques used to characterize the hole-closure in these hohlraums and present the experimental measurements of this process. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We observed a violation of the normal Raman selection rule in the resonant Raman spectra of interface (IF) phonon modes of the ultrathin (GaAs)4/(AlAs)2 superlattice. Contrary to the prediction of conventional theories, all four IF modes were observed in both (XX) and (XY) geometries. The result can be interpreted as a consequence of the deep penetration of the electron wave function in the GaAs wells into the AlAs barriers and a lack of definite parity of the electron wave function. Furthermore, our result indicates that conventional theory for bulk (thicker) systems may need to be modified and further developed to be applicable to ultrathin systems. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assay to detect nervous necrosis virus (NNV) in fish was developed by using two sets of primers designed on a highly conserved region of the coat protein gene encoded by RNA2 of NNV. The first pair of primers amplified a fragment of 605 bp by one-step reverse-transcription (RT)-PCR, while the second pair amplified an internal segment of 255 bp by nested PCR. Addition of nested PCR increased the assay sensitivity 100-fold when carried out in a separate tube (two-step assay) and 10-fold when performed in the same tube (one-step assay). The sensitivity of the two-step assay was 104 times higher than that of virus cultivation. Nested PCR served also to confirm the specificity of the first amplification, as verified also by Southern hybridization analysis and direct sequencing. In species known to be susceptible to infection, such as European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, and gilthead seabream, Sparus aurata, NNV was often detectable in brain tissue by RT-PCR alone but only by the two-step assay in blood, sperm, ovarian tissue or larvae. The same was true for sperm and ovarian tissue of shi drum, Umbrina cirrosa. NNV was also detected in the brains of Japanese red seabream, Pagrus major and brown meagre, Sciaena umbra, suggesting that these species can also be infected. No NNV was detected in samples of Artemia salina nauplii and rotifers obtained from a fish farm with an NNV outbreak. The inclusion of nested PCR in the assay appears to be necessary to screen out NNV-positive broodfish by blood sampling and testing of their larval progeny.

Notizen: The relationship between contamination of potato seed tubers with Erwinia carotovora ssp. atroseptica (Eca), blackleg disease development, and the incidence and level of progeny tuber contamination in field grown crops was studied in 1998, 1999 and 2000. Seed tubers were inoculated by vacuum infiltration at three levels (low, intermediate and high) with a streptomycin-resistant marker strain of Eca (SCRI1039Str) and planted in the field. Blackleg disease development was directly related to the level of seed tuber contamination. The higher the level of seed tuber contamination, the earlier in the season blackleg disease appeared and the greater the final level of disease, which continued to rise as the season progressed. High and low levels of seed tuber contamination were related to high and low incidences of progeny tuber contamination, respectively, at all sampling times. However, an intermediate degree of seed tuber contamination tended to be associated with a low level of blackleg disease, a variable incidence of progeny tuber contamination early in the season but a high incidence later in the season. The level of progeny tuber contamination, derived from seed tubers inoculated at the three different levels of Eca, was categorized into four contamination classes (〈 102, 102–103, 103–104 and 〉 104 marker strain colony-forming units/mL peel extract). At the lowest level of seed tuber contamination, progeny tuber contamination tended to be in the two lower categories. However, as seed tuber contamination increased, the proportion of contaminated progeny tubers in the two higher categories also increased. Overall, the results suggest that progeny tuber contamination is related to seed tuber contamination and blackleg disease, and that the threshold level of seed tuber contamination remains an important factor in predicting both blackleg disease and tuber health.

Notizen: Metal matrix composites have many desirable characteristics for precision components, e.g., light weight, dimensional stability, and high thermal conductivity. The understanding of the mechanisms and processes taking place at their production is of crucial importance, since these factors are important for the properties of the composite and its future application. A theoretical model of the processes at diffusion controlled formation of TiB2 in liquid Al under microgravity has been proposed. The main features of the developed model are: mechanisms controlling the formation of the TiB2; degree of distribution of the dispersed TiB2 particles; and mean size and size distribution of the dispersed TiB2 particles. The results obtained with the aid of the proposed model were verified on our recent experiments at the STS95 space shuttle mission. The model predicts correctly the TiB2 particles distribution along the specimens and the characteristic split of the reaction zone observed experimentally. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Measurements of radiation temperatures from empty and gas-filled hohlraums heated at the Nova Laser Facility [E. M. Campbell et al., Laser Part. Beams 9, 209 (1991)] show efficient coupling of the laser power to the target when applying laser beam smoothing techniques. Scattering losses are reduced to the 3% level while the radiation temperatures increased by ∼15 eV for smoothed laser beams. The experimental findings and supporting calculations indicate that filamentation and gain for stimulated Raman and Brillouin scattering is suppressed in the hohlraum plasma for smoothed laser beams. The scaling of the radiation temperature is well described by integrated radiation hydrodynamic LASNEX modeling [G. B. Zimmerman and W. L. Kruer, Comments Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 2, 85 (1975)] following the Marshak scaling. Peak radiation temperatures are in excess of 230 eV in gas-filled hohlraums in agreement with the detailed LASNEX modeling. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We report measurements of the Ce L3-edge x-ray absorption near-edge structure on CeAl2 nanoparticles with average diameters of 80 Å. The Ce exhibits a mixed valence with a small amount of tetravalent Ce, which is in contrast to the purely trivalent Ce observed in bulk CeAl2. A shift in the absorption edge to higher energy and a narrower linewidth are also observed in the nanoparticle samples. These spectral differences are attributed to surface effects caused by the small particle size, including a lower coordination number and higher surface pressure. The observation of nonmagnetic tetravalent Ce with the 4f0 configuration is in good agreement with the small values of magnetic entropy seen in low temperature specific heat measurements. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
