    Description: The cloud observation archive from the NASA Global Atmospheric Sampling Program (GASP) is analyzed in order to derive the probability of cloud encounter at altitudes normally flown by commercial airliners, for application to a determination of the feasability of Laminar Flow Control (LFC) on long-range routes. The probability of cloud encounter is found to vary significantly with season. Several meteorological circulation features are apparent in the latitudinal distribution of cloud cover. The cloud encounter data are shown to be consistent with the classical midlatitude cyclone model with more clouds encountered in highs than in lows. Aircraft measurements of route-averaged time-in-clouds fit a gamma probability distribution model which is applied to estimate the probability of extended cloud encounter, and the associated loss of LFC effectiveness along seven high-density routes. The probability is demonstrated to be low.

    Description: Additional statistics relating to the climatology of cloud cover at airline cruise altitudes are presented. The data were obtained between 1975 and 1979 from commercial airliners participating in the Global Atmospheric Sampling Program (GASP). The statistics describe the seasonal, latitudinal and altitudinal variation in cloudiness parameters as well as differences in the high-altitude cloud structure attributed to cyclone and convective-cloud generation processes. The latitudinal distribution of cloud cover derived form the GASP data was found to agree with high-altitude satellite observations. The relationships between three different measures of cloudiness and the relative vorticity at high altitudes is also discussed.

    Description: In response to recent concerns over possibly high ozone levels in the cabins of aircraft flying in the stratosphere, simultaneous measurements of the cabin and ambient ozone levels have been made as part of the NASA Global Atmospheric Sampling Program. Examples of the data taken on commercially operated Boeing 747-100 and 747SP airplanes are given for selected flights, together with summary statistics of over 5600 observations. Cabin ozone levels vary with the ambient level and, for unmodified aircraft, are higher on the 747SP than on the 747-100. Modifications to the ventilation system of the 747SP reduced cabin ozone levels by varying amounts up to a factor of 14.

    Description: The gas turbine combustion system design and development effort is an engineering exercise to obtain an acceptable solution to the conflicting design trade-offs between combustion efficiency, gaseous emissions, smoke, ignition, restart, lean blowout, burner exit temperature quality, structural durability, and life cycle cost. For many years, these combustor design trade-offs have been carried out with the help of fundamental reasoning and extensive component and bench testing, backed by empirical and experience correlations. Recent advances in the capability of computational fluid dynamics codes have led to their application to complex 3-D flows such as those in the gas turbine combustor. A number of U.S. Government and industry sponsored programs have made significant contributions to the formulation, development, and verification of an analytical combustor design methodology which will better define the aerothermal loads in a combustor, and be a valuable tool for design of future combustion systems. The contributions made by NASA Hot Section Technology (HOST) sponsored Aerothermal Modeling and supporting programs are described.

    Description: This paper presents data on the ozone mixing ratio, static air temperature, wind speed, and wind direction obtained at altitudes from 8 to 12 km during several flights of a commercial airliner equipped with a fully automated air-sampling system developed for the NASA Global Atmospheric Sampling Program (GASP). The objectives of GASP are reviewed, and the data-gathering techniques are described. Two data sets are discussed which illustrate variations of the upper-tropospheric and lower-stratospheric ozone mixing ratios as a function of geographical location and aircraft altitude. Good agreement is found between the GASP data and the tropopause height obtained from National Meteorological Center gridded data.

    Description: Mean temperature profiles calculated with an interactive microcomputer code which evaluates dilution-zone design alternatives are presented to show the effects of flow and geometric variables on the mixing of a single row of jets injected through sharp-edged orifices into a uniform flow of a different temperature in a constant area duct. In addition, this program is used to calculate profiles for opposed rows of jets with their centerlines in-line, by assuming that the confining effect of an opposite wall is equivalent to that of a plane of symmetry between opposed jets.
