    Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The stratigraphic and biogeographic distribution of more than 170 species of deep-water agglutinated benthic foraminifers (DWAF) from the North Atlantic and adjacent marginal seas has been compared with paleoenvironmental data (e.g. paleobathymetry, oxygenation of the bottom waters, amount of terrigenous input and substrate disturbance). Six general types of assemblages, in which deep water agglutinated taxa occur, are defined from the Turonian to Maastrichtian times: 1. High latitude slope assemblages 2. Low to mid latitude slope assemblages 3. Flysch-type assemblages 4. Deep water limestone assemblages (»Scaglia«-type) 5. Abyssal mixed calcareous-agglutinated assemblages 6. Abyssal purely agglutinated assemblages Latitudinal differences in faunal composition are observed, the most important of which is the lack or extreme paucity of calcareous forms in high latitude assemblages. East-to-west differences appear to be of comparatively minor importance. Most DWAF species occur in all studied regions and are thus considered as cosmopolitan. Biostratigraphic turnovers in the taxonomic content of assemblages are observed in the lowermost Turonian, mid- Campanian and in the upper Maastrichtian to lowermost Paleocene. These datum levels correspond to inter-regional and time-constant paleooceanographic events, which probably also affected the deep-water benthic biota. This allows us to use deep-water agglutinated foraminifers for biostratigraphy in the North Atlantic sequences deposited below CCD and to geographically extend the currently used zonal schemes which have been established in the Carpathian and Alpine areas.
    Abstract: Résumé La répartition stratigraphique et biogéographique de plus de cent soixante dix espèces de foraminifères benthiques agglutinants d'eaux profondes de l'Océan Atlantique Nord et des mers adjacentes a été examinée en fonction des paramètres du paléoenvironnement (paléobathymétrie, oxygénation et dynamique des eaux de fond, apports détritiques terrigènes). Sur une période s'étendant du Turonien au Maestrichtien, six types principaux d'associations, comprenant en tout ou partie des taxons agglutinants profonds, ont été définis: 1. associations de talus en haute latitude 2. associations de talus en basse latitude 3. associations de type flysch 4. associations de calcaires pélagiques (type »Scaglia«) 5. associations abyssales de type mixte avec foraminifères à test calcaire et foraminifères agglutinants 6. associations abyssales uniquement composées d'agglutinants. Des différences latitudinales sont apparues dans la composition faunique: la plus importante réside dans l'absence ou la très grande rareté des formes à test calcaire dans les associations de haute latitude. Des différences en longitude, d'est en ouest, apparaissent comparativement d'importance mineure. La plupart des espèces de foraminifères agglutinants d'eaux profondes se rencontrent dans toutes les régions étudiées et peuvent donc être considérées comme ubiquistes. De nettes coupures biostratigraphiques, fondées sur des renouvellements fauniques, sont décelées au Turonien basal, au Campanien moyen et au passage Meastrichtien supérieur-Paléocène basal. Ces niveaux repères correspondent à des événements paléo-océanographiques isochrones et d'extension supra-régionale, qui ont probablement affecté aussi les formes benthiques d'eaux profondes. Ceci nous incite à utiliser les foraminifères benthiques profonds pour la biostratigraphie des séries Nord-Atlantique déposées sous la CCD et par corrélation nous permet d'étendre géographiquement l'usage de zonations initialement définies dans le domaine alpino-carpathique.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die stratigraphische und biogeographische Verbreitung von mehr als 170 Arten sandschaliger benthischer Tiefwasser-Foraminiferen wurde im Nordatlantik und seinen Randmeeren untersucht. Hierbei wurden die in den einzelnen Untersuchungsgebieten unterschiedlichen Paläoenvironment- Bedingungen (Wassertiefe, Sauerstoffverhältnisse am Ozeanboden, detritischer Eintrag und Beeinträchtigung des Substrats durch Strömungs- und Sedimentationsprozesse) zu der jeweiligen taxonomischen Zusammensetzung der agglutinierenden Benthos-Fauna in Beziehung gesetzt. Für den Zeitraum vom Turon bis zum Maastricht ließen sich zwölf charakteristische Vergesellschaftungen agglutinierender Tiefwasser-Foraminiferen unterscheiden, die in sechs Hauptgruppen zusammengefaßt werden können: 1. Kontinentalhang-Vergesellschaftungen hoher Breiten 2. Kontinentalhang-Vergesellschaftungen niedriger bis mittlerer Breiten 3. Flysch-Vergesellschaftungen 4. Vergesellschaftungen pelagischer Kalke (»Scaglia«-Typ) 5. Abyssale gemischt kalkschalige und agglutinierende Benthos-Vergesellschaftungen 6. Abyssale rein agglutinierende Vergesellschaftungen Biogeographische Unterschiede in der Faunenzusammensetzung korrelieren vor allem mit der geographischen Breite, wobei besonders das Fehlen kalkschaliger Elemente in Faunen hoher Breiten auffällt. Ost-West-Unterschiede sind von geringerer Bedeutung, die Mehrzahl der Arten tritt in allen untersuchten Gebieten auf und kann als kosmopolitisch angesehen werden. Faunenschnitte können im basalen Turon, im mittleren Campan und an der Kreide/Tertiär-Grenze beobachtet werden. Diese Zeitabschnitte sind durch überregionale paläoozeanographische Events charakterisiert, die wahrscheinlich auch das Tiefsee-Benthos beeinflußt haben. Dieser Zusammenhang zwischen der Evolution agglutinierender Tiefsee- Foraminiferen und globalen, zeitkonstanten Events ermöglicht eine biostratigraphische Gliederung der Sub-CCD Serien des Nordatlantik mit Hilfe sandschaliger Foraminiferen, die sich weitgehend mit den Zonierungen, die in den Flyschzonen der Karpathen und Alpen entwickelt wurden, korrelieren läßt.

    Description: The transfer of surface and intermediate water from the Pacific to Indian Ocean through the Indonesian passages (Indonesian Throughflow: ITF) strongly influences the heat and freshwater budgets of tropical water masses, in turn affecting global climate. Here, we use combined d18O and Mg/Ca analyses of surface and thermocline planktonic foraminifers to estimate variations in sea surface temperature, salinity and mixed layer thickness over the last 140 ka. Comparison of water mass properties reveals a steeper thermocline temperature gradient in the Timor Strait than in the eastern Indian Ocean during glacials, implying a decrease in ITF cool thermocline outflow. A major freshening and cooling of thermocline waters occurred at c. 9.5 ka, when sea level rose above a critical threshold, allowing establishment of a shallow marine connection from the South China Sea to the Java Sea. Comparison of benthic d13C profiles (c. 1800 to 3000 m water depth) suggests vigorous mixing of Indian Ocean and ITF outflow intermediate waters during interglacials. In contrast, deep and intermediate water masses became more stratified during glacials. Lower d13C values at c. 3000 m water depth reflect a decrease in deepwater ventilation, probably related to slowdown of the global thermohaline circulation during glacials.

    Description: Outstandingly well-preserved benthic foraminiferal successions from upper Aptian-lower Albian sediments at Site 1049 (Leg 171, Blake Nose escarpment, western North Atlantic) provide a detailed record of the faunal turnover across Oceanic Anoxic Event 1b (OAE 1b). Changes in abundance, diversity and species composition reflect strong fluctuations in carbon flux and bottom-water oxygenation. Before the onset of black shale sedimentation, the originally diverse assemblages are replaced by low-diversity associations, dominated by species inferred to be opportunistic phytodetritus feeders and thriving on an enhanced carbon flux to the sea floor. The 46 cm thick laminated black shale horizon corresponding to OAE 1b is virtually devoid of benthic formainifers or contains highly impoverished assemblages, suggesting that intense eutrophication and/or strong stratification triggered near anoxia at the sea floor during black shale deposition. Above the black shale, reoccurrence of the pre-black shale fauna points to relatively rapid bottom-water reoxygenation. The benthic formainiferal record of Leg 171 provides clear evidence that no major extinctions occurred across OAE 1b, as most of the species occurring below the black shale reappear above it. In contrast to other Cretaceous anoxic events, OAE 1b may have been more limited in duration or in geographical and water-depth extent, allowing recolonization from adjacent, more hospitable areas, once local conditions improved at the sea floor. Prolific radiation within the suborder Rotaliina and diversification of Textulariina with calcareous cement appear to have started in the Aptian time before OAE 1b, and continued into early Albian time to give rise to many of the modern lineages.

    Description: The onset of the early Aptian oceanic anoxic event (OAE) 1a (ca. 120 Ma) coincided with a major perturbation of the carbon cycle, which is reflected in the sedimentary carbon isotope record. Triggering mechanisms, duration, and climatic repercussions of this episode of accelerated organic matter burial remain poorly constrained. Here, we present millennial-scale bulk rock carbon and oxygen isotope data from a marly subtropical intrashelf basin (La Bedoule, southeast France) with unusually high sedimentation rates, which track the onset of OAE1a in unprecedented resolution. Our record reveals that the negative, low-amplitude {delta}13C excursion preceding OAE1a lasted 〉100 k.y., implying that enhanced volcanic CO2 emission and/or pulsed methane dissociation over a prolonged time span were instrumental in triggering OAE1a. The main positive carbon isotope shift at the onset of OAE1a, previously regarded as continuous, occurred stepwise over an extended period of 〉300 k.y. Transient climate cooling during the initial {delta}13C increase probably reflects ephemeral high-latitude glaciation, triggered by changes in radiative forcing and drawdown of atmospheric CO2.

    Description: Oceanic anoxic events (OAEs) document major perturbations of the global carbon cycle with repercussions for the Earth's climate and ocean circulation that are relevant to understanding future climate trends. Here, we compare the onset and development of Cretaceous OAE1a and OAE2 in two drill cores with unusually high sedimentation rates from the Vocontian Basin (southern France) and Tarfaya Basin (southern Morocco). OAE1a and OAE2 exhibit remarkable similarities in the evolution of their carbon isotope (δ13C) records, with long-lasting negative excursions preceding the onset of the main positive excursions, supporting the view that both OAEs were triggered by massive emissions of volcanic CO2 into the atmosphere. However, there are substantial differences, notably in the durations of individual phases within the δ13C positive excursions of both OAEs. Based on analysis of cyclic sediment variations, we estimate the duration of individual phases within OAE1a and OAE2. We identify (1) a precursor phase (negative excursion) lasting ∼430 kyr for OAE1a and ∼130 kyr for OAE2, (2) an onset phase of ∼390 and ∼70 kyr, (3) a peak phase of ∼600 and ∼90 kyr, (4) a plateau phase of ∼1340 and ∼200 kyr, and (5) a recovery phase of ∼380 and ∼440 kyr. The total duration of the positive δ13C excursion is estimated at 2700 kyr for OAE1a and 790 kyr for OAE2, and that of the main carbon accumulation phase is estimated at 980 and 180 kyr. The long-lasting peak, plateau and recovery phases imply fundamental changes in global nutrient cycles either (1) by submarine basalt–seawater interactions, (2) through excess nutrient inputs to the oceans by increasing continental weathering and river discharge, or (3) through nutrient recycling from the marine sediment reservoir. We investigated the role of phosphorus in the development of carbon accumulation by analysing phosphorus speciation across OAE2 and the mid-Cenomanian Event (MCE) in the Tarfaya Basin. The ratios of organic carbon and total nitrogen to reactive phosphorus (Corg∕Preact and Ntotal∕Preact) prior to OAE2 and the MCE hover close to or below the Redfield ratio characteristic of marine organic matter. Decreases in reactive phosphorus resulting in Corg∕Preact and Ntotal∕Preact above the Redfield ratio during the later phase of OAE2 and the MCE indicate leakage from the sedimentary column into the water column under the influence of intensified and expanded oxygen minimum zones. These results suggest that a positive feedback loop, rooted in the benthic phosphorus cycle, contributed to increased marine productivity and carbon burial over an extended period of time during OAEs.
