Description: An inverse process approach using satellite-driven (MODIS) biophysical modeling was used to quantitatively assess water resource demand in semi-arid and arid agricultural lands by comparing the carbon and water flux modeled under both equilibrium (in balance with prevailing climate) and non-equilibrium (irrigated) conditions. Since satellite observations of irrigated areas show higher leaf area indices (LAI) than is supportable by local precipitation, we postulate that the degree to which irrigated lands vary from equilibrium conditions is related to the amount of irrigation water used. For an observation year we used MODIS vegetation indices, local climate data, and the SiB2 photosynthesis-conductance model to examine the relationship between climate and the water stress function for a given grid-cell and observed leaf area. To estimate the minimum amount of supplemental water required for an observed cell, we added enough precipitation to the prevailing climatology at each time step to minimize the water stress function and bring the soil to field capacity. The experiment was conducted on irrigated lands on the U.S. Mexico border and Central Asia and compared to estimates of irrigation water used.

    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: Ferromanganese concretions from Grand Lake and Ship Harbour Lake in Nova Scotia and Mosque Lake in Ontario are most common in water 0.5 to 2 m deep. X-ray diffraction studies show the ferromanganese portions of the concretions to he amorphous. Petrographic and electron probe studies of the ferromanganese material reveal chemical banding of iron and manganese. Bulk chemical analyses indicate that the Fe:Mn ratios of concretions from different sites within a single lake are similar, whereas concretions from different lakes have characteristic Fe:Mn ratios. Trace element concs are different in different lakes and are generally several orders of magnitude less than those of oceanic nodules.

In:  Supplement to: Harriss, Robert C; Crocket, J H; Stainton, M (1968): Palladium, iridium and gold in deep-sea manganese nodules. Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, 32(10), 1049-1056, https://doi.org/10.1016/0016-7037(68)90107-5
    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: The abundance and distribution of palladium, iridium and gold has been determined in manganese nodules from widely varying locations and geological environments within the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. The distribution of these metals is characterized by a lack of distinct regional variations, homogeneous distribution within an individual nodule, and a lack of any correlation with variations in major and other trace elements in the nodules. Assuming that all the iridium in the manganese nodules is of extraterrestrial origin, an upper limit on the mass accretion rate of interplanetary matter to the earth is calculated to be 60 tons/day over the surface of the earth.

    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: Studies by optical microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and electron probe techniques of ferromanganese concretions from three Canadian lakes reveal chemical banding of amorphous hydrated iron and manganese oxides. The average ratio of iron to manganese in concretions from these lakes varies from 0.43 to 2.56. The concentrations of cobalt, nickel, copper, and lead are one to two orders of magnitude below those reported for oceanic ferromanganese concretions.

Description: Manganese nodules were selected from various areas of the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic ocean. They were analysed using a mercury vapour discharge technique. The minimum precision of the technique as determined by multiple analyses of individual samples was +- 12 per cent of the amount present.

Description: Agriculture and industrial development have led to inadvertent changes in the natural carbon cycle. As a consequence, concentrations of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases have increased in the atmosphere and may lead to changes in climate. The current challenge facing society is to develop options for future management of the carbon cycle. A variety of approaches has been suggested: direct reduction of emissions, deliberate manipulation of the natural carbon cycle to enhance sequestration, and capture and isolation of carbon from fossil fuel use. Policy development to date has laid out some of the general principles to which carbon management should adhere. These are summarized as: how much carbon is stored, by what means, and for how long. To successfully manage carbon for climate purposes requires increased understanding of carbon cycle dynamics and improvement in the scientific capabilities available for measurement as well as for policy needs. The specific needs for scientific information to underpin carbon cycle management decisions are not yet broadly known. A stronger dialogue between decision makers and scientists must be developed to foster improved application of scientific knowledge to decisions. This review focuses on the current knowledge of the carbon cycle, carbon measurement capabilities (with an emphasis on the continental scale) and the relevance of carbon cycle science to carbon sequestration goals.
